Get em Niners
For the second time in five weeks I am stuck in the undesirable position of having to put my faith in a mediocre quarterback to beat the Giants. Last time Mark Sanchez and the Jets could've actually given the Eagles a playoff berth with a win, so clearly this upcoming game doesn't directly affect us in the same way. However throughout my life I accidentally made a few friends in the Northern New Jersey area, and honestly their happiness if the Giants win is more than I can bare. Seeing as how Giants Territory is directly ajacent to Eagles Territory (I think there's an unofficial line about two thirds of the way down New Jersey) I would think there are several other fans in the same predicament. So im putting out the question, who thinks were gonna have to suffer through a Giants super bowl?
PS I know its a little unfair to put Alex Smith in the same boat as Sanchez as he made some great throws to beat the Saints and has been pretty good all year. Still he's not exactly 2004 Peyton.

My friend lives in Lawrenceville and him and our other friends in that area are Birds fans…but if you go east across the state a little ways, everyone near the shore are Giants fans…i think the line you speak of pretty much zigzags across nj

The Unofficial line is I-195 runs East & West across the state. North Giants / South Eagles …. However, there is a 15-20 mile buffer zone on either side.

I was hoping someone would weigh in on this. All I know is Central (like Middlesex/Monmouth County) is pretty heavily NY everything, and clearly everything north of that too. But South Jersey has some of the biggest Eagles fans in the world
yeap...though I've found the lower edge of Middlesex is primarily mixed. But yes...lower than that its Green.

I wish they both could lose, but if I had to choose, I want the Giants to win
The 49ers game was FAR FAR FAR more frustrating than the loss to the Giants. Winning either game would’ve put us in the playoffs. And IMO it’s more absurd for the 49ers to have won 13 games than the Giants to win 9, especially with the tough schedule and injuries they had.
We’ve owned the Giants in recent years and they basically tried to hand us the division by winning only 9 games. The Eagles could’ve been resting their starters by week 14 if they lived up to expectation. The 49ers might not have had such a great season if any of the the conspiracy of fluke plays and lucky breaks that handed them the game against the Eagles didn’t happen.
then im sorry youre reasoning makes no sense. you cant ever want the giants in the superbowl. i have no problem with the niners…and if the niners dont win i might cry. the fact youre rooting for the giants…one of our most hated rivals because you believe the eagles should have beaten the niners???? that makes NO sense
claude giroux and shady mccoy. the future
I don’t understand the logic of hating the Giants (or Cowboys) more than everyone else just because the arbitrary concept of “divisions” forces us to play them twice a year. We’re 7-1 against the Giants in the last 8 and we had the most thrilling win in franchise history against them.
I think it makes much more sense to hate a team like the Bears, who have eaten us alive repeatedly. They’ve given us 4 extremely devastating and frustrating losses in recent years, each of which ended up costing us either a playoff spot or a bye.
It is very simple
The New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Redskins are our division rivals. As a result, I hate the New York Giants, I hate the Dallas Cowboys, and I Hate/Feel Sorry for the Washington Redskins. I hate the Bears, too, but I hate our division rivals more. How can you not want the 49ers to win, especially considering it would be a great story to go to a Super Bowl after going 6-10 the previous year! They even have DAVID AKERS…at least root for them so he gets a shot at the Super Bowl! I respect your opinion and all, but you clearly don’t live near any Giants fans…I could not take it if they won the Super Bowl again.

Here is why I am pulling for the 49ers to win the Super Bowl
1) I grew up in the 1980s – back then during the period of NFC dominance up to the mid 1990s if you were an Eagles fan, the 49ers were often your only hope to stop the Racial Slurs, Giants, or Cowboys from winning the Super Bowl. Thus, cheering for the 49ers comes natural for an Eagles fan.
2) The enemy of your enemy is your friend. What team do 49ers fans hate more than any other – that’s right, the Cowboys. They are also rivals with Oakland who broke my heart by beating the Eagles in the Super Bowl when I was 5. Add in all of those years where they alone were able to stop Cowboys, Giants, or Redskins teams from winning hte Super Bowl and its easy to reach the conclusion that the 49ers are Eagles allies.
3) The dominance of the 49ers defense should be a wakeup call to the Eagles administration to get some good linebackers. I’m hoping to see the Ravens and 49ers make the Super Bowl (with the 49ers winning) because it will tell the Eagles that they need to quit neglecting linebacker and get a real middle linebacker here.
4) The way these 49ers play the game is like the Eagles teams of the past – aggressive blitzing defense, generating turnovers, keeping the offense from making mistakes, and David Akers field goals.
5) Long term Eagle David Akers can get another shot of winning a Super Bowl. Yes, he’s a kicker, but he played for years here.

The enemy of your enemy is your friend
Thats really what it comes down to. Also I find this 49ers team likable in many ways.
-Like he said they had a rivalry with the Cowboys too
-Terrell Owens screwed their franchise over as well
-Their fans have endured 8 straight seasons without a winning record
-Akers deserves whatever he gets. http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/30/david-akers-played-during-daughters-cancer-scare/
-Patrick Willis, Navarro Bowman, and Alston are all beasts on defense who play the right way.
-Alex Smith has been shit on his whole career, and has been through like 5 offensive coordinators. I find it hard to hate on the kid
Agree with absolutely everything. The niners have always been my second favorite team.

You think Mr. Brady might be more than a little motivated to completely blow the Giants out of the stadium after they upset his perfect season 4 years ago?
It was annoying watching Sportscenter

It all comes down how you define elite IMO
What I think is elite is different than what you think so it’s all subjective. I think that he’s in the second tier quarterbacks with Roethlisberger,Stafford,Vick,Romo, and Rivers but not with Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Peyton who I think are elite

I never said I thought he's better than Peyton...
I think Eli is behind Brees, Rodgers, Brady (not going to include Peyton because I think Peyton comes back and regresses severely. Just a hunch. Eli is not better than Peyton pre-injury). I think he’s tied with Roethlisberger for 4th, with Romo and Rivers tied with Stafford and Vick for the 5th spot. Here’s my reasoning:
Tier 1: Brady, Rodgers, Brees, pre-injury Peyton – Elite Accuracy, Leadership, Awareness, Athleticism, Dependability
Tier 2: Eli, Big Ben – Elite Dependability, Leadership (I think these two are every bit the leaders that the tier 1 guys are), Awareness, and they both have that Clutch factor (I think they are 1 and 2 in active come from behind wins)
Tier 3: Romo and Rivers – Elite Accuracy, Athleticism, Awareness – I think they suffer from the same issues. Elite stats in the regular season, but never comes up in the clutch. More physical tools than Eli and Big Ben.
Tier 3: Vick and Stafford – Elite Athleticism, Leadership – Vick is a transcendent athlete and Stafford has a cannon. They both are leaders, but both seem to be made of glass. Stafford has only had one good season, and Vick has had a mediocre season this year. I’d like to see some consistency from them.

yea I think you need to throw a "1A" tier in there
its obvious that guys like Romo, Vick, Stafford and Rivers are really, really good but there’s just something missing. They win, they put up stats, but there’s just something with Eli this year and in past years Roethlisburger that they get in rhythm and they just make big plays and they win.

Big Ben
I think he actually lacks dependability and leadership but has elite awareness, athleticism and accuracy. He’s always playing through some injury, and it clearly affected him this year. Its comical that the Steelers just can’t keep their O-line healthy, and thus can’t keep ben healthy. And every year you hear something from the steelers locker room that makes you wonder about him. James Harrison is nobody’s idea of a stand-up lockerroom guy, but the comments he made in the GQ interview about Ben after the 2010 superbowl have to make you wonder.
Go Giants!

This is the best i could do..
1. my first criteria would be. can this player carry his team for a extended period of time (missing running game ,hurt WRs , Poor OLINE play and so on.)? these guys can/have!
Brees
Brady
Eli
Rodgers
Stafford
Vick
Ben
2.Can/have they beat other "Elite" Talent/teams in BIG GAMES/playoffs?
Eli
Brady
Brees
Smith
Ben
Rodgers
Flacco
3. Reg season stats.
Stafford
Romo
Brady
Rivers
Eli
Brees
Ben
Rodgers
Smith
Matt Schaub
Ryan
Vick
4.Ability to perform in the clutch (4th Q/2 min).
Romo
Smith
Rivers
Rodgers
Ben
Eli
Brees
Brady
5. Health (always there to lead your team)
Ben (Plays through it)
Eli
Brady(minus the 1 bad injury)
Rodgers
Brees
Rivers
Flacco

Couple of disagreements….
Reg Season stats, you have Romo only trailing Stafford? What about the record breaking years of Rodgers and Brees?
Romo #1 in clutch? I am confused.
Is your list in no particular order?
Either way, i do not think its justifiable to have Romo listed as clutch. That man has botched as many plays in the 4th qtr as he has made. That works out to be a wash in my book….

def not in order
Romo can and has been clutch. He has the highest 4th Q QBR of any active QB. And has been money in 2 min. GE falls short in Cat. 2 because he fall short in the playoffs and playoff runs.

Its good criteria. If I added one category it would be “takes care of the ball” and that would be the one category where Eli doesnt measure up to the other elites
Brees had 22ints last yr .
keep into account in almost 600 pass attempts(4th highest) Eli has only 16 picks , and before last yrs anomaly Eli had seasons of 10 & 14 ints. (not the int machine that many perceive he is).
I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.
Giant LB'zz SUCK!! Mark Herzlich, Jacquian Williams,...Maybe .. Sadly this has been modified.
I still refuse to call him elite, but must say that he’s impressed me this year. He’s pretty close to elite.
The one thing that frustrates the hell out of me about Eli is how often he gets away with throwing the ball up for grabs. I think that part of the reason he gets away with it is that the Giants seemed to always have receivers that are good at coming down with jump balls in traffic. That’s the one thing that the Eagles receivers don’t do well and I wish that they did.
Go Eagles!
Eli reminds me of Donny Mac
Not so much in actual style of play but in that when Eli is good, he’s very very good, but then there’s games where he just looks like he doesn’t have a clue.
Luckily, a decent amount of those games have been against the Eagles, but unluckily (for us, not to imply that them winning the SB was luck), he’s the one with the ring.
Eli has developed into a great QB
But he doesn’t have to carry his team like Brady or Peyton does. If you put Peyton or Brady on the Giants they would blow out every team they faced
I felt like destroying something beautiful
I would argue that he has...but fuck, man...an Eagles fan (actually multiple Eagles fans)
have admitted that Eli is a great QB. That just about made my day, I ain’t gonna push it.

Worst case scenario is the Patriots vs The Giants in the SB. I DO NOT want to have to choose between those 2 evils.
In 07, I admittedly wanted the Giants to upset the Patriots. So sick of the 19-0 bullshit and Tom Brady….plus, it was much more fun to route for major underdog. That was a really fun SB, and i am glad the Giants won.
That said….there is no reason for me to like or dislike either of these teams more than the other, so worst case in 2012 IMO, is Giants and Pats.
I am hoping for a 9ers v Ravens SB. That way i can stomach the winner. either way.

Even 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 Peyton werent 2004 Peyton. Thats doesnt matter though….
But if Eli wins his 2nd ring, then the debate will be absolutely legit as to which on is better. Especially considering the idea that Peyton could retire and Eli could really have another 4-5 years playing at a very high level.

It will be Giants / Patriots in the SB. I must have pissed someone off in a previous life, because that is the worst case scenario. I’d be forced to route for the Patriots. As bad as them winning the SB would be, Giants winning would be much worse. How can a team that lost to the Redskins twice this year win the effing Super Bowl?
Go Eagles!
I think the Giants will lose in the SB
Unfortunately, I think they’ll lose to NE, one of only two teams I dislike more than the Giants.
In 2007 I actually thought I hated NE more than the Giants, then I realized how much worse the Giants winning is.
Think about it this way. When you argue recent championships with a Boston guy hes got you anyway. But right now whenever a Mets/Giants fan brings up their SB, we can counter with the World Series which is more recent. If they win another super bowl it tips the balance and we pretty much have to STFU until we win another.
I’m an Orioles fan so I can’t fight the Philly vs. NY thing, anyway, but here’s my thoughts though…the Eagles have never won a SB and we’re constantly reminded of it. I’ve seen them in one superbowl in my lifetime (don’t remember ’81) and they lost by 3 points to a team that was probably cheating.
I think it’s reasonable to say that the Patriots were better than the Eagles and that the Eagles didn’t execute well in that game (the 8-minute 2-minute drill, McNabb throwing up/not throwing up/whatever), but the bottom line is that it was a 3-point game and that in theory one first down, one play could have made all the difference.
Until the Eagles win a SB, I’ll always be more bitter toward NE than any other team. I think that outweighs my dislike for the Giants.
Yea I feel you. I think if you’re a Phillies/Sixers/Flyers/Eagles fan then our rivalries vs NY teams get almost personal, whereas if your an Eagles fan but not all the Philly teams then the rivalries and the teams you hate shift with the times
Dallas is always public enemy number 1. Giants are usually 2, but now I dislike NE more and I think the Saints, too. (The bandwagon annoys me. I see a NYG jersey here in York county and at least I believe they’ve probably been a Giants fan a long time. All the Saints fans at the bar the other night? Yeah, sure you’ve been Saints fans your whole lives.)
/rant
I live in Virginia and have lived in Virginia for Years
So I’ve always disliked the LOLSkins the most followed by the Cowboys. With the added hatreds of Oakland and New England because of the Super Bowls
The funny thing is that in hockey and basketball, I list the Caps and the Wizards as my favorite teams because of my respect for their owner Abe Pollin who was one of the truly good guys in sports.
Lose-Lose
The only awesome situation would be if the Giants win the NFC Championship Game, then get dominated by the Pats (which is unlikely) but watching the Pats exact revenge on the Giants with a 56-10 romping or something would be kind of awesome, even though I hate the Pats.
