2012 NFL Free Agency: An Early Look at the Eagles Options - Offense
With the Eagles' disappointing 2011 season coming to an end, we as fans are forced to watch as the playoff teams battle it out for Super Bowl glory. To ease some of that pain, many have turned to talk about ways to improve the team for next year - notably through coaching changes and the 2012 draft.
However, I'd like to take an early look at what players could be available for the taking when free agency finally starts. The Eagles obviously made a huge splash last year by landing the likes of Nnamdi Asomugha and Jason Babin, but will this year have the same level of excitement? Let's check out the potential:
Quarterback
Andy Reid's one-year experiment with Vince Young has not worked out, so it's virtually certain that the team will be looking for a new backup quarterback this offseason. While there are several big names who are coming to the end of their contracts - like Green Bay's Matt Flynn, this year's Kevin Kolb - the best option out there for the Eagles will likely be Jason Campbell.
While adding another 30-year-old player might not immediately sound like like the Eagles' MO, Campbell has the experience, the calm demeanor and the familiarity with the NFC East to be a valuable addition to the team. He likely won't be receiving too many offers to start at this point in his career, so if the Raiders don't bring him back, Campbell should definitely warrant a look.
Halfback
Much like Young, the Ronnie Brown experiment will also likely be a one-and-done, leaving the Eagles without a backup to LeSean McCoy. However, there will be several options to replace him. For example, LaDainian Tomlinson may be on the wrong side of 30, but he still has plenty left in the tank to be an effective 3rd down/receiving back for the Eagles' offense.
BenJarvus Green-Ellis may be the odd man out in the Patriots' backfield, as rookies Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley continue to develop. The Law Firm could use his bruising running style to help the Eagles out in short yardage and goal line situations.
Fullback
Ever since the departure of Leonard Weaver, the Eagles have made the fullback position almost a non-factor. While Owen Schmitt has been serviceable for that minimal role, there should be a few big name fullbacks on the market if the Eagles wish to upgrade and let Schmitt walk.
The Chiefs might not be bringing back former Pro Bowler Le'Ron McClain for a second season after a so-so year. However, he still has the pass-catching ability that Andy Reid craves in his running backs. His above-average blocking skills could also be a boon to Michael Vick.
Another available player to pay attention to is Jacob Hester of the Chargers, who was their special teams captain this year. The 26-year-old Hester could be a valuable swing player on the Eagles offense, able to play both halfback and fullback.
Wide Receiver
Wide receiver isn't exactly the biggest area of need for the Eagles, but with the Steve Smith experiment turning out to be a colossal failure, they'll have an open spot on their depth chart. With their kick return game sputtering under Dion Lewis, they would do well to add a speedy and experienced kick returner.
Fortunately, San Francisco's Ted Ginn Jr. is coming to the end of his contract and may be available. Ginn averaged a career-high 27.6 yards per kick return this year, good for third-best in the league. It's high time that the Eagles added a true kick returner to their roster, and Ginn's skills there are enough to outweigh any deficiencies in his receiving game.
Tight End
While Brent Celek started the year off with a sputter, he had an amazing finish, developing into one of Vick's favorite targets. With Clay Harbor as the backup and the Eagles dislike of carrying more than two tight ends on the roster, it's highly unlikely that they'll add any big names through free agency.
Offensive Line
Under the tutelage of Howard Mudd, the Eagles offensive line has evolved from a disaster into a very effective unit. Rookies Jason Kelce and Danny Watkins should continue to improve as their skills evolve and Jason Peters, Todd Herremans and Evan Mathis have solidified their positions on the line. However, as for backups, there are slim pickings. King Dunlap will be a free agent, Jamaal Jackson will almost certainly be released and rookie Julian Vandervelde hasn't had the opportunity to showcase anything yet.
You may remember Dan Connolly's name from his record-setting 71-yard kick return last year against the Packers. However, this New England Patriot is also an accomplished backup lineman, able to play both guard and center. At 29, he could be a suitable replacement for Jackson.
Anthony Collins has had a fantastic run as a backup tackle for the Bengals, but may test the free agent waters this offseason. The agile 26-year-old is undoubtedly one of the best backup OT options available, so if he doesn't get calls for a starting role, the Eagles should definitely give him a look.
Make sure to check back tomorrow for a look at the defensive free agents.

Eric Weems or Ted Ginn Jr would be fantastic pick-ups as return men.
Also I’ve been thinking that if DeSean’s asking price is too high, the Eagles should let him walk, sign Robert Meachem and then draft a guy early (Brian Quick?). Meachem hasn’t been featured in NO’s offense but his metrics are always very high and an increase in usage might lead to a big break-out year. He’s got all of the ability, he just needs to get out of New Orleans. He was the #1 DVOA WR in 2009, #4 in 2010 and #9 in 2011. Really starting to convince myself the Eagles should pick him up.

2012 Free Agency Tracker
PFF has their 2012 FA tracker up
I like to sort by Rating and look
I hope the Eagles can get atleast one of these guys
G-Evan Mathis (resign)
C-Chris Myers (depending on how they feel with Kelce)
DT- Derek Landri (resign)
4-3 OLB- Erin Henderson (Best 4-3 OLB in FA)
4-3 OLB- Jarrett Johnson
ILB- Stephen Tulloch
DE- Robert Mathis (9 technique DE)
ILB-London Fletcher
ILB- D’Qwell Johnson
ILB- Curtis Lofton
D’Qwell Jackson could work for us. I only saw a one Cleveland game this year and he seemed pretty good. What does anyone else think is there any problem with switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3?
3-4 v 4-3
4-3 v 3-4 more has to do with OLB and DE
there is a little difference in NT and DT but very slighty
3-4 is more used to hide where the 4 rusher is coming from where in 4-3 they know where 4th man is coming from
ILB are same in 4-3 as in 3-4 except some teams like Jets use their MAC LB as a full back to keep blocker off the other LB similar to what 4-3 DTs are suppose to do for their ILB

Wrong, wrong, wrong.
1. There is a gigantic difference b/t DT in a 4-3 and NT in a 3-4. 3-4 NTs are Zero tech every play (almost) whereas gap responsibilities and double-team draws are different for 4-3 DTs depending on scheme and playcall.
2. ILB play is totally different b/t 4-3 and 3-4 defenses. Almost in every possible way. Some 4-3 systems ask their OLBs to set the edges (like Fokou did last year in our 4-3 under-plus packages under Segrest), some 4-3 teams call for flat coverage from their OLB on almost every non-1st-down play (think Bucs or Colts), etc. etc. etc. 3-4 ILBs never do this.
3. 4-3 DTs only protect their LBs from blocks under 2-gap play systems like Segrest’s. This is why Chaney and Fokou were awesome behind a Segrest line and terrible behind a Washburn line.
4. And finally, the MACK would never, ever, ever do that for the BUCK. You, in fact, have their roles completely reversed. In more traditional 2-gap 3-4 systems, (Ryan the New Yorker or LeBeau) the BUCK is designed to absorb blocks and keep the play’s sides open for the SS and MACK. Other 3-4s like Phillips’ are all 1-Gap along the DL and let the absorption for the LBs change on a play-to-play basis.
Go get educated.

Marcel Reece from Oakland UFA to replace Schmidt. Reesce is a younger faster Weaver.

36 plus years of rooting for the Eagles I think are comming to fruition this year.
I am not a FAN.... I am a FANATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't care less about FA anymore
After watching the ways the Eagles lost games this season…
After seeing both the unstoppable Packers and Saints get knocked out of the playoffs,
After seeing the Giants in the championship game despite losing half their defense in the preseason and losing two of their key offensive weapons in FA…
I’ve come to the conclusion that football games are completely random and nothing that happens in this offseason will matter.
So damn true
Unbelievable how these playoffs have turned out. I mean seriously, did any of us even think that Alex Smith (!?) would be in the championship game or the Giants for that matter? I’m pretty sure this game is just pure luck now.

Miami Dolphins.Tenn, New York Jets,

Possible Draft Picks?
1st round pick (MLB) Luke Kuechly
2nd round pick (QB) Ryan Lindley
3rd round pick (O-line)

NO. No more short yardage backs. They don’t fit the system. Notice how well things worked last year when the Eagles stopped trying to use a short yardage guy at the goal line, and just went with their best RB in those situations? (Hint: they scored TD’s.)

Thier all pretty much at top notch level!
What the fuck are we doing with Avant,Cooper,Smith & Hall?(backup at best)
As muck as I feel we need a LB, maybe we should draft a 1st Round WR.
Think about it, we got Celek ( most underated Beast at TE)
and McCoy (shiftiest RB in the league) then our only missing pieces are Avant & Shmitts replacements. Avant & Shmitt suck. We never replaced Weaver. We need to draft a big back that we can play as a FB.
So our 3rd ranked offense is the problem?
Turnovers killed this team. That’s it not Juan, not Desean, not the draft, the turnover differential is what killed this team.

BTW all of us Eagles fans better be praying that we keep Jackson regardless to price!
Why? because with Jackson gone, DB’s are going to be playing up field. What does that mean? It means McCoy is not going to have another great year. Every player on O# benefits from Jackson just being a decoy.
True... but ...
and dont get me wrong, I am a Desean supporter … but all we need to do is burn a couple teams with the deep ball and that will keep them backed up.

Burn them without Jackson a couple of times is not the same.
other teams do that and it still don’t make the other team backup thier DB’s.
People really fear DJax speed and that’s good thing. I think someone “maybe Andy”
brought Steve Smith to replace Avant and not a sick Maclin. Andy already said Maclin was looking good in pre-season. Smith was injured any way so how could he backup Maclin? Smith was just a waist of money and time. But the void is still there. I thing we just signed Avery from the Rams and that make’s me happy because he’s a notch below Maclin but he’s also a notch above Avant IMO. Don’t get me wrong I love Avant, you can see he’s a good man on & off the field but we need a WR that can open up plays for Maclin and DJax for a change.
Off topic, but ...
Would ANYONE out there have ever predicted that either the Giants or 49ers would be going to the Super Bowl?? Giants with all the secondary injuries early in the season… 49ers with a new head coach….
Crazy to think about.

I’m certainly not opposed to getting Campbell as a backup, but I’m not sure what kind of cap room the Eagles will have to spend in free agency. I feel like most of that cash will be spent retaining some of our own players like Mathis and possibly DeSean.
And as much as I like Tomlinson, I just don’t see the Eagles going after a running back in free agency. I’d rather them draft a running back late and make Lewis the #2 back.

Agreed.
A big “No thank you” to LT. Dude is done.
Why don’t we take a guy like David Wilson out of VT with one of our 2nd rounders? He’d instantly pencil in at #2 RB behind Shady, plus he’s a top-notch return guy with the speed to house it every time. That’s two positions upgraded and we still have our #1 and other #2 pick to focus on the D.
I like this idea.
Although if we do pick Wilson, I don’t want to ever see him run 25 yards backwards on a running play. Wilson has all the tools though to be a stud.
Haha
Yeah, that was a bad play. To his credit though, he had a few TDs this year that started similarly.
It’s that old Barry Sanders Syndrome… except nobody but Barry can regularly pull it off. Man, I miss watching that guy play. Shady is awesome and all, but the comparisons to Sanders are a bit premature… Go sick for 10 straight seasons and then we’ll talk.
If we can keep this o-line for 10 years I see no problem with McCoy doing that :)

Break it down...
QB—Eagles need a REAL starter here and not some guy whose claim to fame is being great in Madden 2004.
RB—Top 5 RB already in McCoy so a back up is all that’s needed.
WR—Maclin is the only one worth a damn but he’s a #2 at best. Try to get a real #1 WR.
TE—Celek isn’t great but he’s good enough.
If the Eagles can get a real QB and someone to help Maclin, Eagles will be a borderline playoff team, fighting it out with Dallas for the wild card.

RB: While Tomlinson or The Law Firm would be semi-exciting additions the Eagles backfield, I’m not sure either guy would want to join the team. I think the Eagles are pretty notorious around the league at this point for being a wasteland for backup RBs. These guys have got to look at Ronnie Brown’s season and realize that unless McCoy gets injured, you’re looking at three touches a game… if you’re lucky. I kind of like the idea of letting Lewis backup McCoy and bringing in a veteran as the #3 RB. I think Jerome Harrison could be a guy to look at. The Eagles still like him, obviously, and word about his brain tumor was that yes it’d end his season but likely not his career. If he’s recovered from surgery and looks good in a workout, I think he’d be worth a look as our never-sees-the-field #3 RB.
FB: I’d love to see La’Ron McClain in midnight green. If Michael Robinson tests the free agent market, he’s another option at fullback that is a good receiver out of the backfield.
O-Line: I’m down for signing any low-risk high-reward undersized athletic linemen on the market. With Mudd’s offensive line scheme, we utilize undersized O-linemen that other teams that prefer big bruising O-linemen wouldn’t normally consider. We can take advantage of Mudd’s eye for talent and bring in unheralded players and possibly get really strong contributors out of them (e.g. Mathis/Kelce) at backup positions.
