NFL Divisional Playoffs Open Thread

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - DECEMBER 04: (L-R) Eli Manning #10 of the New York Giants congratulates Aaron Rodgers #12 of the Green Bay Packers after the Packers won 38-35 at MetLife Stadium on December 4, 2011 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images)

We got the best (Saints vs Niners) and worst (Tebow, Broncos) of the NFL playoffs yesterday and with another two games on tap we could be looking at more of the same today.

If there's potential for another Patriots vs Broncos, it's probably Houston at Baltimore. You could certainly see the magic running out for TJ Yates against the great Ravens D in Baltimore. At the same time, the Giants and Packers could certainly put on a show this afternoon. The Packers won in New York the last time they matched up, but it was a close game. The Giants won't have homefield advantage this time but if they play like they did last week they can stay competitive in this game.

Use this thread for your predictions and to discuss the games this afternoon.

I’m wearing a Packers hat today that my asshole friend in Milwaukee sent me last year after they knocked out the Eagles. If the Pack fall to the Giants, I’m going to send that fucker back a letter with anthrax in it.

Oh boy, is this great!

Running the ball is so overrated!!! 4 straight runs = FAIL!

Even if you’re getting a good YPC average, running just can’t win you a game by itself.

It’s quite easy to shut down the run when you know it’s coming.

Jesus, intentional grounding and five yards. And that pic shows at least 7 yards.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 15, 2012 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

1. I don't think that's where it landed

You have to look at where it landed.
2. I think manning was being hit and you have to consider maybe he was off balance.

by KevinEagles on Jan 15, 2012 6:09 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

1. That is close enough.
2. That actually proves that it was intentional grounding. Trying to avoid a sack.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 15, 2012 6:10 PM EST up reply actions

it's like if his arm was hit when he throws it

That wouldn’t be intentional grounding. You can argue he was trying to throw it to someone but someone knocked him off balance. And also no it’s not just close enough. I believe the ball traveled quite a bit farther downfield

by KevinEagles on Jan 15, 2012 6:12 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

His arm wasn’t hit.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 15, 2012 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

you're not listening.

Intentional grounding is when you obviously throw it to noone to get rid of it. Not only was it close to a receiver but the fat that he was being hit shows he probably was targeting that receiver.

by KevinEagles on Jan 15, 2012 6:15 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

No you aren’t listening. He made an obvious attempt to get rid of the ball to avoid a sack. There was no receiver in the area. He actually wasn’t hit when he threw it.

I rewound my DVR and watched it over and over again. It was intentional grounding.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 15, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

then I'm wrong about him being hit

that win streak at teh end was extremely overrated. look at the teams we beat, the dolphins (pretty solid football team), a garbage jets team, the oh so amazing redskins and the cowgirls without tony romo. not saying we didnt play well, but our competition was horrendous

by Tj Singh on Jan 15, 2012 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

But we played above our competition.

And these two teams are playing like them right now.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 15, 2012 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree, honestly. If anything, the lesson should be that the regular season results don’t matter even one tiny bit – once you’re in the playoffs, that’s all that matters. Giants getting into the playoffs is no more or less likely fundamentally than the Eagles having gotten into it – was anyone impressed with the Giants this season? Not sure why some fans hold other teams on an artificial pedestal and rag on the Eagles no matter what.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 15, 2012 6:09 PM EST up reply actions

I know, I know

I am trolling because you fail to admit that the Giants are actually playing a good game. Yeah, I hate them too, but give credit where credit is due. You can’t just dump all of their good plays on “luck.” I could site luck in every Eagles loss… does that mean the eagles were a good team… just… unlucky?

by insaneeaglesfanatic on Jan 15, 2012 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

They aren’t playing a good game.

And yes, the Eagles were unlucky. They played bad, but they were also unlucky.

by bdawk4ever on Jan 15, 2012 6:16 PM EST up reply actions

Well

They certainly aren’t playing a bad game. And you could make an argument that one of GB’s touchdowns should not have happened. It was a clear fumble, we ALL know it. So Green Bay is very lucky. They are lucky this game isn’t worse. Also, A. Rodge threw an awful pass earlier in the game. Should have been intercepted for a TD. Very lucky for the Packers this isn’t worse. See what I mean??? You can put everything on luck man.

by insaneeaglesfanatic on Jan 15, 2012 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

It obviously was not a CLEAR fumble as you so claim or else the call on the field would have been overturned!!

by PhilsForever on Jan 15, 2012 6:19 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Obviously the giants are getting very lucky again in this game. The packers are getting some, but not as much as the giants. I swear I might end up hating this team more than the cowboys after this postseason.

by PhilsForever on Jan 15, 2012 6:21 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

You can claim anything is luck

Oh, he didn’t make the pass, that was luck. Oh, he got sacked, its lucky the line messed up. There is no luck

by insaneeaglesfanatic on Jan 15, 2012 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

ummm

That argument makes no sense. Both examples you gave are more based on skill than luck. If luck didn’t exist there would not be a stat based solely on luck in sports.

That Steeler team went in beat up, including at QB

And lost 2 more defensive starters during the game. Not a huge surprise they beat them but I don’t think they would have beaten any other playoff team. Maybe the Bengals.

And then the Tebows got exposed like we all knew they would.

And my boys took every opportunity to capitalize on their mistakes. That’s what happens when you make mistakes against a good team. They blow you out and score 37 points.

And GB can thank the refs for both of their TD’s. They were lucky once again with the calls in a game with the Giants.

by EagleinDC on Jan 15, 2012 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

Agree. It makes sense in college when conference perception is a part of how the polls end up and the polls are actually important for the best teams, but in the pros, when there’s no benefit whatsoever to your rivals winning? Dumb.

by PhilsForever on Jan 15, 2012 6:44 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

Because college football is dumb and only the top two teams in the polls have a chance at winning the national title, and because the way that conferences are perceived is a big part of how how teams are perceived (and thus how they’re voted on), there’s a good reason to root for your conference’s teams against other conferences teams.

by EagleinDC on Jan 15, 2012 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

I hear ya

and that’s fine. But in the BCS system of college it actually does help your team if it’s conference rivals do well, whereas in the NFL that’s not really the case. Enjoy the rest of the game.

by ChillBillinChina on Jan 15, 2012 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Not to say you're wrong, just don't agree

It’s one way to think like that if there’s no adverse benefit of the other team winning, or if you have a particular reason to be upset about the other team winning.

Like in that example, in football I have no problem rooting for Pittsburgh, but I’m also a Flyers fan and I would rather gag myself than root for the Penguins because they’re in the Flyers’ division. I also live in St. Louis, and normally I wouldn’t hate the Cardinals, but because they beat the Phillies in the playoffs last year I didn’t want to see them win the world series (so much for that).

Not so sure if that’s what you meant, just kind of how I responded to it.

by everybodyhitswoohoo on Jan 15, 2012 7:08 PM EST up reply actions

Here honestly is what I wanted for today...

If the game was close, I felt I’d prefer the GIants, just because the Packers wouldn’t deserve it. But truly what I was hoping for what a Packers blow-out.

I like the “monolith” teams going down in the off-season because going into 2012 the Eagles have a tough schedule; what I want the lesson to be in the locker room next year is that every team can go down, and we just need to go out and play hard. Atlanta getting no points last week – I like that, since we play them and they beat us last time on some BS non-INTs and dirty hits. NO going down yesterday, same thing – we play them next year, and I just want that aura of invincibility gone.

by insaneeaglesfanatic on Jan 15, 2012 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

Because you don’t judge “better” based on scores alone. You just don’t. You base it on what you feel the results will be. If something has a 2 in 3 chance of panning out consistently, but it comes out with that 1 in 3 miss, it “won,” but that doesn’t mean it’s better.

by EagleinDC on Jan 15, 2012 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

by Eagles swag on Jan 16, 2012 12:29 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Good point.

And IMO, when you win has alot of bearing on whose better. A team can be “better” all they want, but win the damn game when it matters. When there is pressure. When if you lose you go home.

by EagleinDC on Jan 15, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

Well

our coach didn’t make the playoffs this year, or win the SB 4 years ago

by ChillBillinChina on Jan 15, 2012 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

But he made the superbowl

And Coughlin was a hair’s breadth away from not making it this year either. So something completely out of the coach’s control is what determines “terrible” coaching from “legendary” coaching? Judge coaches on coaching. Coughlin is coaching the same today as he was five week ago when people were calling for his head.

by EagleinDC on Jan 15, 2012 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

I

never used terrible or legendary, dunno where that’s coming from. But what exactly was out of Reid’s control? Going eight and eight? Completely changing the defensive coaching staff in a year with no off season? Anything and everything all comes back to the Head Coach.

by ChillBillinChina on Jan 15, 2012 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

Dropped passes for example on plays that otherwise would have been game winners, and as such locked the Eagles the division – those were not on Reid. And that’s all it takes. Coughlin on the contrary has benefited from the reverse Cruz ultra-runs. Im not blaming you or anyone else for saying ‘crap’ vs ‘lengendary,’ but if the Giants were to win the Superbowl this year… that’s my point: the coaching by Coughlin pre-playoffs when people wanted his head, and the coaching now… it’s the same coaching.

by EagleinDC on Jan 15, 2012 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

I never

said Coughlin was great, but he certainly has had more success than Reid if the goal is to win a SB. It is interesting the perception of Reid as a brilliant coach vs. Coughlin as a dumb luck coach, though. Also that nobody criticizes Giants fans for wanting Coughlin out but the national media blasting us for doubting AR.

by ChillBillinChina on Jan 15, 2012 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

On NFL radio

I definitely have heard them comment that the NYC fans that were calling for Coughlin’s head were not in their right mind as well. It may not get as much play, but I think that’s more because the calls were not as loud as from Philly fans. Or, it could just be that Reid commands enough respect from fellow coaches, players, and media that they feel more inclined to defend him. I do think he is a consistently “good” coach.

Watching the Giants winning this game makes the following plays all the more painful

-Steve Smith’s dropped pass int
-Nnamdi’s collision with Coleman that lets Cruz walk 72 yards for a score
-The “bloodline” bro getting torched by a bomb to the biggest, slowest RB in the league.
-The late hit on Vick that knocked him out, after which the Eagles produce no more points
-TWO first and goals from inside the 3, both failed to score
-4th and 1 fail by McCoy that sets up game-winning TD
-Babin’s offisides penalty that ruins the Eagles’ last chance.

If any of these things didn’t happen, the Eagles could be playing today instead of the Giants.

No, the Giants don’t have a great GM who knows how to put together a team, and a coaching staff that has a long track of success, or an outstanding QB who is also a great leader, or 100 other things I could write here, no, every victory of theirs is LUCKY.

Because you won't cease trolling, I'll shut you the fuck up myself

Look, the Giants have not gotten lucky over the past four weeks. In fact, over the past four weeks, the Giants have been the best team in the NFL. They are playing really well as a team and it is showing in the DVOA. However, one month is too small a sample size to make a reasonable conclusion that the Giants are the best team in the NFL. However, history tells us the best predictor of the playoffs is not the last four games, but the last eight to twelve games, because it is a bigger sample without being too big as to factor in results from a team that no longer applies due to injuries, roster transactions, whatever. If you go back and take that into account, you have a 5-week period where the Giants were absolutely terrible and a 4-week period where they were the best team playing football. Suffice to say, the Giants are a very abnormal team because they did this in 2007 as well when they won the Super Bowl. Why this is? I could not tell you. The Giants are an exception to the rule, not the rule itself. And no, the answer is not because they have “heart,” "passion, or whatever intangible you probably like to think they possess but really have no way of knowing before. The Giants are proving an exception to the rule, not the rule itself.

And yes, it is still true, Eli Manning is not elite.

Gotta agree.

And on JPP, it is very possible that he will be the best defensive player in the game next year so every GM who picked 1-14 two years ago will be wishing they had drafted him so I don’t think you can get to worked up about it.

If everyone knew he would be what he is and is becoming, he would have went top 3 in the draft, no question.

If you compare Maclin and Nicks's DVOA this year

They come out very close. Nicks ended the season with a 15.4% DVOA. Maclin ended the season with a 14.9% DVOA.

If you look at the same stat for last season, Maclin barely comes out on top of Nicks

They are two very comparable receivers who fit in well with their teams. Both sides should be satisfied with the receiver they got from the 2009 Draft.

Jackson simply couldn’t play back then. He would get killed going across the middle & wouldn’t be able to get off the line effectively.

Watching the beating the Giants’ LBs/DBs put on Reed across the middle and the Bills’ K-Gun offense that Super Bowl is just something you won’t see today.

On Eli and Eliteness. Is Eli "ELIte?"

Going by Football Outsiders, we see Eli Manning is 6th in DYAR among 47 qualifying QBs and 8th in DVOA among the same 47 qualified QBs. Now let’s remember the definition of elite: “the most powerful, rich, gifted, or educated members of a group, community, etc.” In other words, while we can throw the words “good” and “great” around willy-nilly, elite clearly is a word saved for the best of the best. Click on the FO link and look at the numbers. Three QBs stand among a tier of their own, in both DYAR and DVOA. These three, the elite three QBs of the 2011 NFL Season:

Aaron Rodgers
Drew Brees
Tom Brady

Nowhere in this list is Eli Manning.

I get why people like Eli Manning. He is a goofy-looking, somewhat off-beat guy who does not have any character flaws that would drive people away from rooting him. While he is on a rival team, I don’t dislike Eli Manning. Hell, I get a kick out of watching him. He is fun to watch. Call Eli Manning “very good,” or maybe even “great,” if you consider “great” to be any QB that is top 10 in the league. Eli Manning fits that definition. Eli is very good at what he does. He has a Super Bowl ring. He is two wins away from another.

But Eli Manning is not among the NFL’s elite. He never has been. And until he can consistently perform at a level that puts him right with the league’s best on a long-term basis, he will never be elite, no matter how many Super Bowls the New York Giants win under his watch.

on Blogging The Beast. He is not that top tier QB, but dude is legit talented man, time to get over it, accept it, and move on.

by brisulph on Jan 16, 2012 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

I love Jimmy, but I respectfully disagree with him and have given my reasons above and will explain more below

Now, if you have a different definition of elite, then maybe your list changes. But I am looking at who consistently is in the very top tier of NFL quarterbacks and calling that small tier the “elite,” bunch. I’m not talking Top 10 (which Eli is), or even necessarily Top 5 (which Eli isn’t), just who stands alone in the top tier. And this year, there is a very clear tier. Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, and Tom Brady.

Never in his career has Eli Manning been in that top tier. Not this year. Not in year’s past. When Eli plays himself in that top tier consistently for an extended period of time like Rodgers, Brees, and Brady has, I will call him elite. Tony Romo has done it before. Eli Manning has not.

And I don’t even begrudge that Eli Manning is talented. He is talented. Top 10 QB in the NFL, definitely. If you want to take that and make the jump to say he is “great,” then he is “great.” But to say he is in the very top elite class of QBs is flat-out delusion, given the above definition of elite.

Unless of course you want to water down the “elite” pool and extend it to included 2nd tier QBs (which given elite is essentially top tier I would never do, but I’ll play along to illustrate this point), then you must also acknowledge the fact that Matthew Stafford is an elite NFL Quarterback.

Is anyone arguing Matthew Stafford is an elite NFL quarterback?

Being elite is not about winning a few big games, it is about among the very best QBs in the NFL for an extended period of time. Anyone can win big games. Kyle Orton won a big game this season. Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl. But they were never elite. They never played at an elite level for an extended period of time. And until Eli Manning does that, he won’t be an elite quarterback. And if he does next season, then I will happily call him elite.

But until then, Eli Manning is not part of this year’s elite class of quarterbacks. Period. End of story.

My mistake, I mis-remembered the DVOA. Tony Romo was up there in the 2nd tier in 2007, but Peyton Manning and Tom Brady were so far ahead of everyone that year that calling him elite would be hypocritical of me. For that, I do apologize. Tony Romo has never been an elite quarterback. Of course, that is not what you are referring to, but whatever, I can admit when I am wrong.

Trent Dilfer won a Super Bowl.

With an epic and arguably the best D ever.

Brady
Rodgers
Brees
Ben
Eli

Stafford 1 good yr ,18 TDs to the best WR in the games helps.
Rivers ( Yes, stats are pretty, but being “Elite” also means beating elite talent. something he cant do.
Romo (See Rivers)

I dont know what “elite” means at the QB position.(unlike yourself) But I do know he is top 5 . until/if Payton can be Payton again.

You clearly have no idea what you are arguing about. I am using DYAR and DVOA from Football Outsiders to rank quarterbacks, use those numbers to develop a tier of “elite QBs,” and say Eli Manning is elite. What are you using?

This year’s Top 5 QBs were Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Stafford, and Romo, in order from 1-5. If you disagree, please show me what metric you are using to compare these quarterbacks and why it is better than DVOA.

Yes, I know that Baltimore D that won a Super Bowl was beyond awesome. My point was Trent Dilfer was the starting QB of a Super Bowl winning team and that just because you win a Super Bowl as a QB does not mean you are elite QB. Same with Kyle Orton. Just because you win a big game against a then undefeated team, it does not mean you are elite.

But of course, you are too stupid enough to understand this.

I transposed stats as I typed in the names.

The names should be in order: Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Romo, and Schaub.

That’s right. Tony Romo was right on the cusp of being elite this year, and he had a better season than Eli Manning.

Of course, though with intelligence and a thirst for knowledge probably already knew this.

I get it . In your world advanced metrics are used to measure a QBs greatness...got it .

OK take a moment and soak that in…. It could be that Im a “tard” but Im just now getting over the laughter(sorry).

Moving on.. “elite” in my book (which gos beyond stats. You know like the rest of the world?)
1. my first criteria would be. can this player carry his team for a extended period of time (missing running game ,hurt WRs , Poor OLINE play and so on.)? these guys can/have!

Brees
Brady
Eli
Rodgers
Stafford
Ben

2.Can/have they beat other “Elite” Talent/teams in BIG GAMES/playoffs?
Eli
Brady
Brees
Smith
Ben
Rodgers

3. Reg season stats.
Stafford
Romo
Brady
Rivers
Eli
Brees
Ben
Rodgers
Smith
Matt Schaub
Ryan

4.Ability to perform in the clutch (4th Q/2 min).
Romo
Smith
Rivers
Rodgers
Ben
Eli
Brees
Brady

5. Health (always there to lead your team)

Ben (Plays through it)
Eli
Brady(minus the 1 bad injury)
Rodgers
Brees
Vick
Rivers

Rodgers
Ben

Now unlike you I left out the Orton’s and Dilfer’s of the word. (for obvious reasons… I hope)

Now Go play with your DVOA and tell me how they measure those 5 standards… And if you think they aren’t fair standards on measuring a QBs greatness ,please explain how .

O and try to spare me the name calling because Im sensitive and fragile.

However, it just comes to show that the lack off class from those Giants fans who are trolling all over BGN. I mean, you just won a second playoff game and are now in the NFCCG; is that not enough? Since when do you have to come over here and gloat about it?

Just have fun with it

You’re not going to stop idiot fans from coming over here. You’re never going to stop idiot fans from coming over here. It just happens. The Giants fans that do come here are so insecure anyway.

Don't expect many people to find this...

Giants fan and BBV member here. I’d like to apologize for some unnecessary dickery from my fellow Giants fans. I may disagree with you about a number of things, and I may be excited about the victory, but as it wasn’t even against the Eagles, I think any BBV member who feels obligated to troll here ought to reconsider his priorities.

Go Blue. I look forward to the next Giants-Eagles games.

Thank you sir, you are one of the classy Giant fans

I grew up in Pa. but my job has taken me deep into the swamps of louisiana where all you here is "who dat, who dat" and on clear nights when the wind is gently blowing from the northwest you can hear the wimpers and sobs of jerry and his herd of cowgirls.
