Eagles should draft Dont'a Hightower with the #15 overall pick

- Luke Keuchly will probably not be available by #15. In any case while Keuchly's "lack of athleticism/size" has been way overhyped I agree with Trotter's assessment that he doesn't have a natural "pop" to get off interior lineman, which is what a wide nine (or even a non-wide 9) MLB needs in the NFL.

- Burfict is a psycho and a moron. He's not smart enough to run an NFL defense. If they drafted him he'd wind up in the news the first offseason for getting arrested at a Camden Motel 6, in a soiled diaper smoking crack and drinking syzzurp.

But I've just been watching some YOUTUBE GAMETAPE of this Hightower nigga, he is easily the most physical linebacker in this draft at the point of attack. More physical even than Burfict, who likes to knock out ballcarriers but doesn't seem to want to dirty his hands in the trenches. Hightower regularly takes on interior lineman, presses them away, and chases down ballcarriers. He is an excellent blitzer. He is well-spoken, and a veteran leader of what was one of the more complex defenses in college football.

He has supposedly ran a 4.67 40, which is respectable for a MLB. But I don't care about 40 times so much as the fact that he looks very explosive in small spaces, it doesn't look like a man his size should be moving that fast.

His largest liability may perhaps be pass coverage but I think he could better at it than people think; he's a 'natural' big boy (about 6'4 260lbs) and seems to have excellent body control for his size; being 6'4 also doesn't hurt in TE coverage. But coverage shouldn't be the main concern when we're looking at MLBs to draft... honestly our nickel defense might work better with a Rolle/Clayton duo at LB than any of this draft class' middle linebackers. We just need an enforcer and physical leader for first and second down.

I think this pick should be used on Hightower, and I think Hightower has the potential to be an as good/better pro player than Keuchly and easily better than Burfict.

Also if they're using this first pick on Hightower what does everyone think of filling their need for a SAM linebacker with KEENAN ROBINSON from Texas in the 3rd round or so. That nigga fierce too.

And...

Here we go. Now that Burfict has been thoroughly debunked all the “WE WANT TO BE BIGZ” guys are shifting their attention to Dont’a Hightower. I’ll say it now, Hightower is far too slow to be a MLB in a 4-3 defense. Also, I love how these Kuechly critics are now saying “he’ll probably be gone”. They’ll say anything so long as they can convince themselves that Kuechly won’t be an Eagle.

Oh and you’re wrong about block shedding too, we don’t need a guy who can shed blocks just for the sake of shedding blocks. We need a guy who can recognize what is happening in front of him, get to his spot/gap and make the play. Dont’a Hightower is not that guy, Luke Kuechly is.

You don’t think Hightower could be serviceable as a 4-3 MLB? I’m not particularly a fan, just curious. He’s not gonna have grat range, but I would think he’d do well as a run stuffer at least. I’m okay giving up some passes over the middle if we can lock down the run game. If it came down to it, would Hightower work in the 4-3 at all, or would he flat-out suck?

I think Hightower would bring something simliar to what Trot did. A monster blitzing and in the run game but a major weakness against the pass. I think that weakness could be mitigated by good safety play however.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Hightower ran something similar.

3-4 Guy

I would be stunned if any 4-3 team took Hightower. His skill set doesn’t translate to the 43 defense.

3-4 guys

you know hes a ILB right? its OLB which makes a fit for 3-4 or 4-3 not playing the inside

by StevenKerwood on Jan 16, 2012 7:13 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I do

I also know that you need to have more sideline to sideline speed to play MLB in a 4-3 than a 3-4. Particularly if you are playing behind a Wide-Nine defensive line where you have to cover wider gaps in the run game. I love Hightower for a 3-4 ILB, but I’d be lying if I said I think a 4-3 team will take him.

The Eagles are not going to be selecting a LB with their 15th pick, no matter who it is. They’ll probably go o-line or d-line tackle, or wr (if they trade Desean) or even cb (with DRC in his final year). They’ll probably try to get a decent MLB in free agency this year and that will be that, they’ll probably pick up Stew when he gets cut by the Cards and try to plug him back in there. I won’t believe all this LB talk until I see it. And none of these guys are proven in the NFL, and you want to stick them in their rookie years to start and be in charge of the defense ?? I can’t imagine that they go into this year with the same strategy as last year. Think free agency, I’d rather see more talk about who is available in free agency that the Eagles will likely try to get to be the MLB than this talk.

I'm all-in for the 2012 season !
Dwight Howard is coming to Philly. Maybe. Probably not. But we can at least hope, that's all we have.

by Eagladelphia on Jan 15, 2012 7:17 AM EST reply actions

Why would we need o-line or DT with your first pick? We are set a DT, with Pats, Jenkins, Dixon and hopefully Landri. Only way to draft an o-line at 15 if its a franchise tackle (we dont need that) or an all pro guard (we should resign Mathis and do you want to replace Watkins already?).
Of all the needs on this team LB is the biggest need by far, it is so big that the Eagles should draft atleast 2 LBs in the first 2 rounds.

by Anders Jensen on Jan 15, 2012 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded down from 15…there are reasonable question marks surrounding all of the potential 4-3 middle linebackers available in the first round, and there are some solid veteran FA options to be had. Given the lack of depth at LB, I’m not sure how I feel about starting another rookie at MIKE next season, even if it is a first rounder. Reid would be taking a big risk by doing that in a make-it-or-brake-it season as head coach.

At least one more year of Andy and Juan. If they don't win it all they both better be gone!

Here's Lawlor's take on Hightower
Hightower isn’t a tackling machine. He finished his career with just 101 solo stops. However, that number must be put into proper context. First, Bama had a great defense and that meant fewer chances for tackles. If the opponent goes 3 and out you just aren’t going to pile up big numbers. Also, Donta played 3-4 ILB. That means sharing tackles with the other ILB. MLBs are going to have more tackles. Finally, Donta played DE in a lot of Nickel and Dime sets. That took away more chances for tackles (and INTs).

Hightower is special in some ways. I think he’s the best hitter in the whole draft. He can just devastate guys with big hits. Hightower has the burst and skills to be an effective pass rusher. Hightower is also a huge ILB. He lists at 6’4, 260. Might actually be heavier than that.
Donta got his while being the key figure on a defense that finished 1st in the nation vs the run, pass, overall, and in points allowed. I think Brent Musburger said the other night that Bama gave up just 9 TDs all year long. That’s not good defense. It is dominant, stifling defense.

While there are similarities between the two players, Hightower is much more NFL ready. He’s got the size and strength for the NFL right now. Hightower is much more of a physical LB than Matthews was. Hightower’s used to playing in a complex defensive scheme. He’s used to having multiple roles. Hightower would have some definite adjustments to make if the Eagles took him, but the transition would be less than what it was for Matthews.

However, he does mention previously in the article that he would prefer Kuechly and that Hightower would be an experiment. Worth a read.

Hightower at 15 is a reach

Most people see him going late first/early second though. Even though it can happen, i dont see Kuechly getting drafted before 15. Looking at teams that needs linebackers (Minnesota, Buffalo, Tampa Bay), Kuechly may be considered as a reach and the teams may look at other needs and/or take the best player available.

Ummm

“Youtube gametape” = Highlight video’s from Youtube meant to make the player you searched for look good through means of editing out all the fuck ups, normal hits and anything that doesn’t stand out and putting what’s left to music which is often times some sorta rap that involves “nigga’s” fucking other “nigga’s” up.

Youtube “gamefilm” is a joke… Look up actual game footage and watch what he needs to work on as well as what he’s good at then make an assessment.

As for Hightower, using the 15th pick on him is a major reach in my eyes, I like the kid but he seems like a 2nd-3rd rounder to me because from everything I’ve watched of him he has issues in coverage… Honestly if we’re going for a guy like Hightower I’d say just take the chance on Burfict, take Trevathan later in the draft and fill other needs.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

I’m not sure Hightower has the speed to work inside a 4-3. I like him, not at #15, but I like the guy. I just worry that he’s not going to be to get to the edges as the MIKE in a 4-3. It seems like his perfect position is inside a 3-4.

Imo, the assessment of Kuechly.....

I’ve watched clips on Luke Kuechly, that kid is a leopard stalking it’s prey, that attacks the flank side. He’s well-oiled in bouncing and back-pedaling from blockers, and pouncing into the ball carrier, either taking him or slowing him down for the next 1 or 2 defenders to make the stop. He can dive between blockers and grab/stop ball carriers legs from making another step. Here the best part, got me speechless, a running ball carrier with most of his linemen in front of him….Kuechly took to flight over a couple of linemen and flipped the ball carrier on his back, on his way down with gravity. The ball carrier looked at Kuechly, then to his linemen and tried assess how the hell did this guy come from behind. Kuechly may be light in the things he does, he makes play in the most unusual way. He’s a thinker, a stalker and above all, he’s a blind side flanker, he gets you withhout you knowing that he’s there. The thing about Kuechly, he is definitely versatile in the Mike, Will, as well as Sam. He has all the tools to be instinctive, something that isn’t easy to teach, he just needs to be primed and conditioned into an NFL top player. We definitely have the lockeroom, players and coaches, to do that. Finally, I believe he fits into any defensive schemes, thing is he’s not pound for pound type of stud, because of his instinctive nature he’s lightfooted, yet maintains his control of the situation. Nobody’s perfect in any schemes, can’t predict a player to make it in the top 20’s before or during the next season. A lot of responsibilities begins in the lockeroom, existing players, and all the coaches involved. As for the FO, what will they do with their first and 2 of their second rounders, when the drafts arrives. It remains to be seen, and it starts to get very interesting, either they blow it with too much considerations, or attuned for reasonable attempts to being creative. Whatever the reasons, we all know FO has the last say, then onto training camp.
