The Linc - Tim Tebow Is No Ron Jaworski

Tebow makes history ... but doesn't match Jaws
Where did Tim Tebow's TD pass rank among the league's longest overtime plays? Not as long as Ron Jaworski to Mike Quick.

Will Juan Castillo be the Defensive Coordinator in 2012? That’s the key question facing the Eagles as the team heads into the offseason. Should he keep his job?

Ex-coaches like Jeff Fisher will always draw interest from NFL teams in turmoil - NFL News | FOX Sports on MSN
The NFL coaching carousel has never been creakier. Riders beware, there's some rust on this ride. With the news that 53-year-old Jeff Fisher — he of six winning seasons in 17 years as a head coach in Tennessee, a 5-6 career postseason record, and zero Super Bowl titles — has two once-prominent franchises waiting with bated breath on his decision, I can’t help but envision a terrible college dive bar at 3 a.m. on a Saturday night.

DeSean isn’t the key you think he is for the Eagles | Philadelphia Daily News | 01/06/2012
While I agree that Jackson's speed gives opposing defensive coordinators some pregame dyspepsia, I don't agree that the Eagles' offense will go straight to hell next season if they don't re-sign the guy.

Scenario time: If the Eagles hire one of this guys and they insist that Washburn go, would that make you angry?

Obviously the best case scenario would be hiring Spags IMO.

Thinking Out Loud: You always hear about the gold standard of the Steelers, especially on defense. Mike Tomlin said that its just next guy up and they know what’s expected of them. And it works just like that. Part of the reason that I think there is such a strong “culture” in Pittsburgh is because they fill the staff with former players that played in and understand the concepts that Dick LeBeau tries to run. What if the Eagles did this? I think it’s well known at this point that Jim Johnson tried to create a modern day version of Buddy Ryan’s defense. If you don’t believe me:

"When Jim and I and the rest of the staff got together in 1999 and we were putting together our first playbook and talking about what kind of defense we wanted to have, Jim told me that part of his philosophy stemmed from going up and visiting with Buddy and learning a little bit about our defense in Chicago. Hearing him say that meant a lot to me, because it made it a little bit easier for me as we were sitting down just trying to [figure out] how we wanted the defense to look."

That’s from Leslie Frazier who played with Buddy Ryan in Chicago. Ron Rivera was also a part of the Bears with Buddy Ryan.

I think it would be fantastic if the Eagles could reestablish this kind of a situation where we look to our past to make our future brighter. Bring back Spags. Bring in great Eagles to coach. Seth Joyner has said he would be more than willing to coach the Eagles’ linebackers. Would Eric Allen coach the secondary? Would Troy Vincent coach the secondary? Would Clyde Simmons coach on this team? He took a training camp job with Rex Ryan and the Jets last year. And eventually, I really hope Brian Dawkins takes a spot on the staff.

Pressed post by accident.

I agree we should definately fill out or coaching staff with players. I don’t know why but I think awestbrook would e a great RB coach and Dawkins would be a great DB coach. There’s a lot of passed and present eagles that would become good to great coaches.

Terrible idea

Why would you want a defensive coach staff filled with former ex-Eagles players who have little/no coaching experience? Former great players almost always make below average/terrible coaches in every professional sport.

Duece Staley did ok for us. lol

Mike Ditka, Dan Reeves, Bill Cowher, even Jack Del Rio was on the Ravens coaching staff when they won a Superbowl. I really dont think its farfetched to think a former player can make a good coach

Yeah, because former players are ALWAYS awful coaches. You must be kidding me…

You seriously believe that it is as simple as Tomlin described? Come’on. As for harking back to Ryan, I get so tired of those comparisons. The league is completely different and you can’t run a base 46 defense any more like Ryan did when he was the Bears’ defensive coach in the mid-80s.

by MG77 on Jan 10, 2012 9:17 AM EST up reply actions

Holy hell. Who said anything about running a 46 defense? I said that Jim Johnson’s defenses was rooted in a desire to create a modern day 46 defense and that is an undeniable fact that comes straight from one of the creators mouths (Leslie Frazier).

I wouldn't mind Spagnuolo coming back

But the Eagles have to nail the draft this year and actually draft guys in the first 3 rounds who have a real impact. Given that they have a mid 1st-round pick and 2 2s, this is a make or break year for Roseman.

by MG77 on Jan 10, 2012 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

Impact 1st year

Because if the Eagles resign Jackson, they aren’t going to be huge players in FA.

by MG77 on Jan 10, 2012 9:21 AM EST up reply actions

not necessarily ..

Consider how many guys are leaving this offseason: Vince Young, Ronnie Brown, Steve Smith, Asante Samuel … some big money about to be cleared up … and with the new rookie contract limits … should be interesting.

Agree on Joyner, I said a little while back that I would love too see him brought in

and couldn’t agree more with Vincent, Simmons, etc. Also, if we hire Spags I would have no problem with scrapping the wide 9. Spags will create havoc with our pass rushers regardless, however, he is probably the only coach that I would fully trust to be able to bring consistent pressure without Wash.

Why?

What makes you think he would be interested in coaching or more importantly a decent coach? Why would you want a rookie coach on a team that is really trying to push for a Super Bowl next year?

Last time I check, Jim Harbaugh is a rookie coach who is a Superbowl contender right now. Just sayin…

My whole point was that bring in Dawkins as a POSITION coach doesn’t damn him into being unsuccessful. Position coaches (while I’m sure it helps) don’t necessarily need to have decades of coaching experience in order to be successful at the Pro level.

You made my point with Harbaugh – played QB in college and the NFL. After helping out Dad at Western Kentucky, he became Quarterbacks coach for the Raiders. Result? Appearance in Superbowl and a QB in Rich Gannon who was slinging footballs everywhere.

Another example : Mike Singletary – played linebacker in the NFL – not so successful as head coach, but where did he get his start? Linebackers coach for the ‘03-’04 Ravens, same year Ray Lewis won Defensive player of the year. While Lewis is a beast, position coaching comes into play somewhere. Oh yeah, and the linebackers that Harbaugh is playing with that are really good, didnt get produced out of nowhere.

Theres alot of people you could put in this list that know the position from playing in the NFL and can be very successful in a coaching role. I truly believe Brian Dawkins could be successful as a secondary coach. He clearly knows the position, he brings leadership on the coaching side, and lets be honest, who wouldn’t want to see BDawk back with the Eagles in any capacity?

Ratings for Tebow

Were the highest for a playoff game since ‘88. I can only imagine how crazy the ratings will be for Tebow-Brady this week in prime time. Get a ton of people who aren’t that interested in NFL to watch.

Tickets for Broncos-Pats game

Cheapest tickets are $167 for terrible seats in the last row of the corner deck. Friend of mind who is a season ticket holder for the Pats is tempted to sell his tickets & use the money as a down payment for next season.

SWITCH TO DECAF...

Dude, you’re 8 of 14 of the posts on this page, take a deep breath. hahahaha.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

I feel like

The “ex-coaches” article linked above is must-read material for a ton of fans around here – I think it outlines pretty plainly and starkly that although some here may not like Reid for whatever reason, he is way above what’s floating around out there in general, and stability in the Eagles organization is a big plus over the turmoil elsewhere. The last three or four paragraphs were especially on point.

Anyway, it’ll be a big year for coaches and players all around – fingers crossed in 2012!
