Am I the only one that is mortified about the offensive line?

Take a look at Vick's stats for the preaseason:

Vick:  52.8% completion, 219 yds passing, 1 TD passing, 3 ints (should be 4), 2 sacks, 45.9 rate, 27 yds rushing, 4.5 ypc, 1 rushing TD, 2 fum

I know its only preaseason and the sample size is small but every stat is significantly worse than what he did last season, and anyone watching the games can tell you the upheavel in the offensive line is a major cause for it.  The current line configuration has 3 new starters (1 rookie, 1 free agent, and now 1 guy cut from another team I believe) and 1 returning starter playing a new position which as a unit have played 0 season/preaseason snaps together.  I don't doubt Howard Mudd but offensive line continuity has a definite correlation with offensive success (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/extra-points/2010/offensive-line-continuity-scores) and its showing majorly in preseason, as he's been shuffling the line around every game.  I really hope the shuffling stops after Week 1 but that may be too much to ask.  For comparison here is what other top QBs did in preseason this year:

Rodgers: 78.7%, 395 p. yds, 4 pass TDs, 0 int , 6 sacks, 130.1 rate, 18 yds rushing, 6.0 ypc, 0 rushing TD, 0 fum

Rivers:      68.9%, 377 p. yds, 4 pass TDs, 1 int , 1 sacks, 114.8 rate, 0 yds rushing, 0 ypc, 0 rushing TD, 0 fum

Brady:      56.0%, 379 p. yds, 3 pass TDs, 1 int , 3 sacks, 92.0 rate, 6 yds rushing, 6 ypc, 0 rushing TD, 1 fum

Brees: 56.1%, 304 p. yds, 0 pass TDs, 0 int , 1 sacks, 79.7 rate, 0 yds rushing, 0 ypc, 0 rushing TD, 1 fum

Big Ben: 67.7%, 361 p. yds, 4 pass TDs, 0 int , 5 sacks, 146.6 rate, 8 yds rushing, 8.0 ypc, 0 rushing TD, 0 fum

Again I know its only preaseason, but all these other guys look light years ahead of Vick and none of their O-line's are being reconstructed to the extent of the Eagles (every single one of them is replacing 0 or 1 starters) .  I dont ever remember an Andy Reid Eagles line with this much uncertainty going into a season.   Am I overreacting?  Please tell me I am, otherwise this could be a long season for Michael Vick.

Yes. You are the only person to voice this concern.

I probably should have used the word mortified.

by BrandonB on Sep 9, 2011 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Take a look at Vick's preseason performance last year

Preseason is a time to test things that typically won’t work in a regular season environment.

If offensive line is our biggest weakness by this much, we’re going to be a hell of a team. If you don’t believe me, look at the Steelers.

by cwel87 on Sep 9, 2011 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Vick had 2s and 3s blocking for him in preseason last year, then had 1s blocking for him in the regular season. You can’t compare playing with 2s and 3s to playing with the first team.

by BrandonB on Sep 9, 2011 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Vick also had 2’s and 3’s trying to stop him.

Any coach will tell you a player’s performance cannot be fairly compared in a game of 1s vs a game of 2s and 3s, there are just too many variables.

No,

But, I don’t think they will be as bad as people are thinking.

The OL isn't as bad as everybody's making it seem.

It’s going to be better than last years.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

That's not saying much but it's something to hang on to.

At least we know that the line is likely to get better as the season goes on, unlike last year’s one.

by davidbt11 on Sep 9, 2011 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Why are you comparing preseason stats? These games count for nothing! And they don’t reflect regular season offensive/defensive strategies at all.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

by alcatraz0109 on Sep 9, 2011 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

Yes but 1s vs 1s can still be a decent indicator how a team is gelling so far going into the season. I would even say the offense should have the advantage because d-coord’s do not want to show anything. It’s not like the players are saying its only preseason, I’m not going to run/block/throw etc. They are still exerting effort and treating it as a real game to get them mentally ready for the season, just on a smaller scale.

Sorry but as soon as I saw stats for the pre-season

I stopped reading…..

He had backups and practice squaders blocking for him. Any coach will tell you evaluating talent playing with 2s/3s cannot be compared to playing with the first team.

Agreed...

now if he had brought up the last three games of last season… where our offense was derailed by defenders flying through the right side of the line over and over, virtually untouched, then he’d have a point.

Concerned? Yes. Mortified? No.
We have much better pieces in place this year, but it will take some time for everything to gel. New scheme, lots of new players and a shitted-up off-season will definitely make the early going rough, but once adjusted, we should have a solid unit.

was against and with 2s and 3s, can’t compare

by BrandonB on Sep 9, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure you can. His numbers were worse against less competition.

Really, I don’t know if we can’t take anything from preseason about the line now because there will be three positions with different starters. We’ve literally never seen the line that will start week one. While that is certainly concerning from a continuity standpoint, we also can’t say that we know for sure that they aren’t good.

Aginst less competition but with backups and practice squaders blocking for him.

I don’t doubt that individually the line is talented, but when will we found out that the line as a unit is good? 4 games? 8 games? The whole year?

by BrandonB on Sep 9, 2011 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

You're trying to legitimize preseason statistics

Where is the line drawn where we ’can’t compare’?

by cwel87 on Sep 9, 2011 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. Like last year, Vick threw for 4 TD’s and ran 2 more in against the Redskins 2nd and 3rd teamers……

(hears whispers from a fellow Eagles fan….)

Oh…that was their 1st team? Shit, i didnt realize that. Nevermind.

but your reasoning for why you are mortified is even more mystifying. If Vick’s not mortified then why should we be ?

You know the Packers and the Steelers (especially) both had OLine problems yet both seemed able to play in the Superbowl.

by Euler.is.a.Pimp on Sep 9, 2011 4:56 PM EDT reply actions

I believe the Packers only lost 1 starter heading into last year from 2009 (Mark Tauscher), so I’m not exactly sure if that qualifies as o-line problems. The Steelers offensive line was in fact a mess, but I think their defense may have had a little bit to do with them getting there.

by BrandonB on Sep 9, 2011 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions

When he says “O-line problems” for the Packers, I think he means that Aaron Rodgers took 50 sacks in 2009.

by Livingonapear on Sep 9, 2011 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

My point exactly. It took the entire 2009 (and the beginning of last year) of the retooled GB O-line to work itself out. This year for the Eagles may be their ’09.

There at least a 10-6 team. A spade is a spade and this oline has never played together and they are learning a new scheme.

I think we have a chance to win the SB. We’re a work in progress. I’m sorry if I’m not willing to let my love for the eagles blind me to the truth. They are a work in progress.

But the skill positions are embarrassingly good. We’ll have to see if the good outweighs the bad.
