Eagles WR Steve Smith A Full Go In Practice

The Eagles sent out their first injury report of the week and the only real surprise was that Steve Smith was a full participant. That means he took all the snaps he was scheduled to and should be on track to play this weekend. Andy Reid has previously expressed some doubt about Smith being ready, but his being a full participant in practice is a pretty good sign. Reid said today that Smith has been running with the ones and that he wants to see how he feels at the end of the week

"He's going to go through this week, he's been taking reps with the first group in a rotation there, so I'm just going to see how he works out this week." Reid said. "I know he wants to play, and feels like he's ready. We'll just see how everything goes."

Practicing full go with the first team? We should all be very encouraged to hear that. The only player who did not practice today was Vince Young, who is still dealing with a hamstring strain. Reid says he's day to day and getting better.

"He's getting better; he's running on it in the pool, it's really just a day-to-day thing right now. Making great progress, working his tail off, he's been in there since he had the injury every day and long hours"

Just remember, when you guys want to bitch at Roseman for getting guys like Watkins in the 1st round….. he still makes impressive moves like getting Smith at the last second…. He could be an impactful player on this team this year, regardless of our already stellar group of WRs

i'm excited to see him play

but i do admit a small part of me kinda wanted both maclin and smith to miss the first game or so just so big red might lean on the run and (hopefully) realize that we could have something special there. that would ostensibly help out kelce too, no?

but i won’t complain seeing the 4wr set of jackson, maclin, avant and smith trot out for the first play, haha.

Highlight of my (non-existant) football career: singlehandedly taking over and winning the annual last-day-of-recess game for my fellow 4th graders against the big bad 5th graders. Anyone in the market for the poorest man's version of DJax for flag football or something, you know where to look.

May have gotten a bad rap going into the season, but he wasn’t very impressive well beyond Week 1.

(However, when your “Jim Johnson disciple” Coordinator manages to make Trent Cole look like a ho-hum pass rusher, I’m willing to put the lion’s share on blame on “Drop my DE into coverage” McDermott for Graham’s performance)

Graham

will be a beast in Wash’s system and definitely should not be evaluated until he has had time to fully recover and learn the new system

He needs to be healthy and in the system before he can be properly judged.

Maybe you should publish guidelines.

Some fans may be a little rusty on knowing exactly when is the right time to “judge” a player.
It is such a critical function ( you know, when a fan judges a player, coach or GM ) that a mistaken evaluation or judgement
might be devastating.

Say, a full season? Barring absolute and utter shittiness that doesn’t seem like a ridiculous thing to suggest. But by your condescending response I take it you know better?

And if not a full season ...

Perhaps a real game or five?

There are no reasonable people who would suggest it’s a good idea to judge a rookie for not starting Week 1. There are, however, plenty of Eagles fans who are not reasonable.

I think people forget that Watkins was not able to participate in minicamps and off-season OTAs because of the lockout. He needs time, people should not be so quick to turn on him and consider him a bust when he has not even played one regular season game yet.

With all that said

I think Watkins better earn his job back by the end of the Season. If he isn’t starting by the end of the year, I would consider that a little disappointing. He was a 1st round pick, in a draft crowded with quality OL players. We should all expect Watkins to be a staple at the RG position for many years, and hopefully Kelce at C, and there’s no reason why that can’t happen this year.

Can we dispel this myth once and for all?

The Eagles were 15th in attempts per game last season (26.8), 5th in yards per game (145.2) and 1st by a lot in yards per carry (5.4).

Even if you take Vick’s stats out, they led the league in ypc.

Running more often doesn’t always mean running more effectively.

To w_e’s original point, they’re running 31 times a game this preseason. Might not mean much, but it’s at least a small reason to believe the runs might increase, along with the level of talent and the fact that we expect to be able to play from ahead.

by D3Keith on Sep 7, 2011 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

There's more to it though

The Eagles will run to kill off a game if they’ve got a second half lead… but if you look at first half running, the Eagles had the third lowest percentage of run plays in the NFL.

So really that tells me that their high run totals from last year were just a function of how often they had a lead late.

Also, Vick ran 100 times, or 23.364486% of Eagles "rushing attempts".

They were called pass plays.

What is the myth that you want to dispel?

The Eagles led the league in ypc but they ran the ball 328 times. Vick’s 100 carries were called as pass plays (other than maybe 5-10 called QB runs). It looks like that puts them at about 27th in the league, not 15th. And this year will be more of the same.

So, again, what is the myth?

I tend to find a lot of crazy things from my ass

but you’re entirely right. It really is just a gut feeling I have.

It’s pretty well considered that a good QB is necessary to win and that a good QB can maybe even create a few extra wins when the talent around him isn’t all that great. I kind of just extended this logic, and my own feelings about Manning, to come to that conclusion.

We’ll certainly see how it holds up if Manning sits this year.

It's the Redskins.

They can definitely compete in any competition that involves futility. I figure they will be up there in the top 5 or so at least and the other teams you mentioned, besides the Bills, technically have their franchise guys in place. Though you have to think the Bengals would go for Luck over Dalton even at this early a stage.

You're way off on 'Skins.

I don’t think there is more than a 3% chance the Redskins are top 5 worst record this year. I would say 7-9 at worst, 10-6 at best. Dallas and NJ could fail miserably.

Uh...

…now, I have empathized with the Giants for all of their season ending injuries…to laugh at that would be “mean or hurtful”. But to laugh at them for mistakenly reading Steve Smith’s injury allowing him to go to a division rival on a one year deal is not mean or hurtful at all.

Late to the party, but

really excited to see Steve Smith in action against the Rams… as long as the o-line can hold up, the offense is going to be unstoppable… Rams might quit by the 3rd quarter..

hahahahahahahahahahaha

"On the flip side, though, Bleeding Green Nation cites a PFF study that says Jackson dropped the highest percentage of catchable passes (19.67 percent) of any receiver in the league last year. I think he also dropped that punt at the end of the last Giants game. But then he picked it back up."
