Eagles Add Two More to Practice Squad

Photo

Yesterday, the Eagles brought back five players who had been released with the final roster cuts to form their 2011 practice squad. Today, they added two more: wide receiver Ronald Johnson and tight end Anthony Hill.

The 5'11" Johnson was a sixth round choice of the 49ers, but didn't manage to earn a spot on their final roster. He brings a good amount of experience returning punts and kicks.

The Texans chose the massive 6'6" Hill with their fourth round pick in the 2009 draft. Despite remaining with the team for two seasons, Hill was only on the active roster for five games, catching a single nine-yard pass. He'll be the first player the Eagles call if either Brent Celek or Clay Harbor get bitten by the injury bug.

Look for the final spot on the Eagles' eight-man practice squad to be filled by DT Cedric Thornton, who was released yesterday to make room for OG Kyle DeVan

[Update by JasonB, 09/05/11 5:59 PM EDT ] It's official. Cedric Thornton is back

And also let me say that I am happy with the final roster except I would have liked to have kept Landri on the team. Hope we can get Cedric on the PS. So ready for Sunday to get here. Let’s go BIRDS!!

I can’t emphasize enough how terrible Johnson was in training camp and preseason. He dropped passes, he fumbled punts, he was terrible.

The 49ers kept Joe Hastings on their practice squad over him. Joe Hastings! He looks like Michael Cera, but with blond hair.

C’mon Eagles…

Weird… Oh well, I’m sure the Eagles like what they saw on tape from Johnson out of USC.

by d-jackfan10 on Sep 5, 2011 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Good pick ups. I actually like both of these guys.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Howard Mudd is going to turn Anthony Hill into a TE. He is a great blocker and he is MASSIVE. At 6’6" and about 278 pounds all he does is need to add some weight.

And I’m calling it now, Ronald Johnson makes this roster next year if he is still around. He is a decently sized (5’11" and 200 lb.) receiver with good speed (4.46 40 yard dash) who runs good routes and has good hands (he did at USC at least). He can also return punts. He is a good addition to the squad, I really like that move.

by d-jackfan10 on Sep 5, 2011 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

That’d be worth a shot. From what I understand he was a solid pass catcher until he hurt his knee in college and is now mostly limited to blocking, but does a good job of it. He’ll probably never make the team as a TE so it’s worth a try.

Last year, possibly. He looked good in camp last year, that’s how he made the team to begin with, but got overblown a bit and reality set in this year. But even last year it was more “let’s keep this guy and give Dunlap the boot” rather than clamor for him to start over Justice. But there was a bit of the latter, as I recall.
