OK, let me start out by saying, I am as frustrated as everyone else and do see all the blogs bashing our team. This post isn't about that, yet is about a glaring problem(s) that have been around for YEARS. Sometimes you have a bad game on one side of the ball, and some times you lay an egg. I have been a fan of football long enough to understand that. With that being said, I haven't lost faith in our team, nor should you. There are two points that must be addressed and go back far longer then the assembly of this 2011 Eagles team.
1) Hope you made it through that disclaimer. The first glaring point goes deeper then just Juan Castillo, but our personal appointments since 06. Yes we had some great coordinators in the early Reid years that help in there aspect of the team, some even became head coaches and some remain head coaches in the NFL, no small feat. Ever since that group of coaching talent, Andy or whoever makes the coaching decisions believes every one of our coaches is the next Spag or Harbaugh.... Which leads me to our defensive coordinator position since the tragic death of our forever beloved JJ.
Last year, Mcdermitt.... OK, I understand the Eagles believed that he may have been the next coming of JJ, that couldn't be further from the truth, then Castillo. I know it is three games into the season, trust me i'm aware. Do all my fellow Eagles fans remember when our defense was the sole of our team and we just needed one good player on offense to win games? This is the furthest from the truth now.
Now to today's game and Juan, blitzing and putting your weak players in one on one positions to get over-matched by the opposition? Does everyone besides Juan understand where our strengths are on D? We play a wide 9 which is a sink or swim d-line scheme, which was not at all our issue today. Juan, your playing 3 LB formations ALL GAME, do you understand our linebackers are not the strength of our D, then you blitz our undersized linebackers against the G-mens huge o line, where is the thought process behind that? anyone?
Now, you have already put your weak players in a bad position, and what do you do with our strong CB core??? You put them in zone, are you kidding me? Do you not thing our CB's could handle man on the giants WR's??? Was Juan thinking at all during this game? Can anyone please calm me down on why an o-line coach is coaching our defense YET has nothing to do with coaching our D-line which you would think he would understand???? CAN ANYONE ANSWER THAT?
2) Second issue that never seems to go away, short yardage offense...... How many years have we been suffering from a lack of short yardage offense? I thought Ronnie Brown would help with this, yet any time we run Ronnie, its on a stretch run. Will we ever understand the importance of short yardage in close games, because honestly I cant remember when we had even a 50/50 shot of making a short yardage play. Is this just me here?
In conclusion, I am angry, I do understand it's early and it was a bad game. These issues have been around for at least a few years now as far as terrible defensive schemes and short yardage issues. Clearly Juan is either not experienced enough for the job or just not smart enough to handle the roll. In the industry I work, just because someone worked in the sales division doesn't make you qualified to handling purchasing, as a owner of a business I WOULD NEVER DO THAT. Yet the eagles feel it is OK to take someone from O-Line to D coordinator because "He has been here so long and deserves a shot" while your owner has dished out so much money to make a run for the Superbowl. I just wish I knew what Lurie was thinking right now....
