Where to start? My Eagles journey with Jaime began in earnest last year, when Jaime and I went to the Eagles/Falcons game at the Linc. On the cusp of autumn, it was a beautiful day, the air warm but crisp, the sky sunny as ever and not a cloud in sight. With the electrifying Michael Vick Experience temporarily on hold due to a rib injury suffered against the Redskins the week prior, the restart of the Kevin Kolb era almost went off without a hitch - if not for Desean Jackson taking a vicious blindside hit that left him with a concussion. For the NFL and sports talking heads alike, that moment provided fodder for the following weeks regarding rules changes, fines, and the state of the game. Otherwise, the Eagles won that game 31 - 17, and we had a wonderful time; enjoying the city of Philadelphia, tailgating with awesome people, and my uncle’s hospitality contributing in equal measure. It was a brilliant introduction for Jaime to the game and team that I’ve loved since as far back as I can remember.
Jaime has exhibited a willingness to go the extra mile with me, and from very early on in our relationship too. We fell pretty hard pretty fast. Jaime is generally open-minded when it comes to trying just about anything once; pig belly (which neither of us wanted to eat, but didn’t want to be too chicken and not even try) during a five course wine-paired dinner in front of a picturesque landscape in Mendoza, Argentina ... skydiving while on a Seattle trip just on the outskirts of the city ... even a round of golf, aided by a sixer of Heineken and no prior experience. With that same spirit she has taken to the game of football, from the unwritten rules, to the X’s and O’s, the players, and of course, all about the Philadelphia Eagles and what it means to be true a fan.
As with that round of golf, I'm sure my patience will be tested, but I'm up for the challenge. I made my mind up from the moment Jaime agreed to take on football and erase the only remaining chasm between us, that as teachers and leaders go, what's called for in this case would be way more Miyagi-san than Buddy Ryan's son.
We've only ran afoul of each other's frustrations a few times so far. Without question however, I couldn't be more excited about the experiences we've had, and the ones to come - going to all 16 Eagles games this year. I know not where this train will take us, other than that it will be making stops along the way in Philly eight times, as well as six more cities we’re psyched to experience. But that’s okay, because they say life’s path is not about the destination, but all about the journey.
The journey continues, this week at the home opener vs. The Giants.
