NFL Power Rankings, Week 2: Strong Debut Puts Eagles High In First Rank Of The Season
We are now one week into the NFL season and already the we're getting hints as to who may be the contenders and who may be the pretenders. 2010 playoff teams like the Falcons, Chiefs and Steelers looked absolutely terrible while some of the worst teams from last year like Buffalo, Carolina and Cincy looked good to competent. There's no doubt that this abbreviated offseason has served as somewhat of an equalizer and proved that teams with stable organizations and most importantly, quarterbacks, were the ones least affected by the lockout.
There may be some surprises in my first rank here, but I want to make it clear that I did this with no pre-conditions. I never did a preseason rank, so I tried not to let my expectations for these teams color where I placed them. This rank is weighted heavily on how the teams looked this weekend and less so on where I think they may end up come January. With the offseason being what it was and with so much player movement, I honestly think that's the only way you can really do a power ranking this early in the season.
1) Green Bay Packers - We'll ignore for this one week how atrocious their defense looked this week. The Packers came into this year as the kings of the hill and still are after a 42 point performance on opening night against New Orleans.
2) New England Patriots - Did you know that since the merger, QBs who throw for greater than 500 yards in a game are on the losing end more often than not (4-5)? Not Tom Brady, who threw for 517 yards in a win over Miami. The question is whether their defense was taking it easy in a blowout or are they just not very good?
3) Philadelphia Eagles - As it turns out, the Eagles did need some more time to gel. About two series. After that, they pretty much handled the Rams. They get a big test next week in Atlanta.
4) Baltimore Ravens - They flat out dominated the Steelers and it was no fluke. Seven forced turnovers? They could run away with that division.
5) Chicago Bears - The Bears are a team that's perennially underrated and forgotten about. This was a team in the NFC championship game and they were an afterthought this year. Not anymore, they flat out worked a popular preseason Super Bowl pick, Atlanta.
6) Houston Texans - The Texans absolutely blew out a Manning-less Indy team and seeing the rest of the AFC South in action on Sunday, they could clinch this division by Halloween.
7) Buffalo Bills - The most complete and total destruction this week did not come from the Texans, Eagles or Pats... It came from the Buffalo Bills who crushed the reigning AFC West champs in Arrowhead. Everyone thought they'd be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes, but at least for this week they're a deserved top 10 team.
8) Washington Redskins - Things start to get compacted here around #7 and #8. Theses teams could all arguably be interchangeable. However, the Skins were just a bit more impressive overall in their win over the G-Men. I'm still not sure I buy Rex Grossman and that offense as anything to be scared of, but I think their defense is for real.
9) Detroit Lions - They win the "Up And Coming NFC Team Bowl" on the road in Tampa and looked good doing it. Their offense will continue to get better as Matt Stafford improves and stays healthy and their defense only gave up 10 points to the Tampa offense.
10) New York Jets - I probably struggled more about where to put the Jets than any other team. Let's be honest, Tony Romo basically let them back in that game single-handedly with two unforced errors in the fourth quarter. That said, it's still impressive to put up 17 points in the 4th quarter and it doesn't matter if the other team makes boneheaded plays if you don't capitalize on them.
11) San Diego Chargers - We should probably take the fact that San Diego only had one terrible half early in the season as a sign of progress. This is a team with a history of inexplicably bad starts and they looked like they were in for another after falling down 17-7 at the half. Unlike last year however, Phillip Rivers and co rebounded, taking care of business at home against an inferior opponent.
12) New Orleans Saints - Shootouts are always so exciting that you tend to forgot the bad of a team after one. It was great watching Drew Brees nearly lead the Saints back to an improbable win over the Pack, but he didn't... and the New Orleans defense gave up 41 points. That said, the game they played that night was good enough to beat probably 27 teams in this league.
13) Arizona Cardinals - This was really a toss up between the Cards and Niners. Both got wins at home to start the season, but I went with the Cards because I actually think Carolina is a better team than Seattle right now.
14) Oakland Raiders - It was not a pretty win, but it was a good one on the road against their hated rivals in Denver. The Raiders D sacked Kyle Orton five times and the combo of Darren McFadden and Michael Bush just ran it down Denver's throat, but the fact that Jason Campbell simply isn't the answer at QB is going to be their Achilles heel all year. Oh and they dumped Gatorade on their coach after the win. After the opener? Really?
15) San Francisco 49ers - That's not a slight to the 49ers though, who will be happy to start the season over the reigning NFC West champs. However, here's the hidden issue with San Fran. Of the 33 points they scored on Sunday, none only one came from an offensive touchdown. They got two kick returns for TDs from Ted Ginn and five David Akers FGs. They aren't beating good teams relying on field goals and hoping for special teams to generate points.
16) Dallas Cowboys - They were probably a half quarter away from being a top 7 team this week, but Tony Romo decided to Tony Romo the game away and here they are in the middle of the pack. Still, as much as the ending must sting, it has to be somewhat encouraging for Dallas to know that they outplayed the Jets, who have made two straight AFC title games, at home for the majority of that game. Those won't be the last stupid Tony Romo turnovers this season, but he isn't going to do that every week.
17) Carolina Panthers - If you just went by the reactions of Panther fans this week, you would have thought they won on Sunday. They didn't, but they did see a record breaking performance from Cam Newton in his NFL debut. And smart football fans know that if you get that franchise QB, winning will follow. There's no doubt that Newton will have his struggles this year, but that's about as good a debut as you could ever hope for from the #1 overall pick.
18) Cincinnati Bengals - Although I think there's no chance that they stay this high, you have to credit the Bengals for going on the road and beating Cleveland, who some saw as a possible up and comer in the AFC. It should be interesting to see what they do at QB. If they don't start Bruce Gradkowski over Andy Dalton, that can only be seen as a sign that they're not really trying their hardest to win this year.
19) Atlanta Falcons - Everyone's darling in the NFC for the past two seasons laid an egg on opening weekend without a blowout loss in Chicago. They won't be that bad the rest of this year and will play better at home, but their defense is still just ok and their offense is still too conservative. It's hard to see that changing. This Sunday's game against the Eagles becomes a must win for them now.
20) Pittsburgh Steelers - This is the "benefit of the doubt" section of our rankings. Atlanta, Pittsburgh & NYG all looked terrible in week one, but were much better last year. So you'd think they can turn it around. The thing with Pittsburgh is that their defense is old and their offensive line stinks... but both were true last year and they made the Super Bowl.
21) New York Giants - Of the three "benefit of the doubt" teams, I believe in the Giants the least. They lost good players in free agency while adding very little (and the players they did add like David Bass were awful), plus injuries have just decimated them. It could really be a long season for New York.
22) Jacksonville Jaguars - The Jags are the lowest team to have gotten a win in our countdown and frankly I don't think they did much more than beat another bad team.
23) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - The Bucs played a paper thin schedule last year that kept them in the playoff hunt and had people talking about them as an up and comer in the NFC. This year their schedule and their division will be tougher.
24) Miami Dolphins - Tom Brady absolutely picked them apart and their defense looks atrocious, but Chad Henne and their offense actually put together a solid outing. Most of the teams lower on this list weren't good on either side of the ball.
25) Denver Broncos - Honestly, I can't say as though I know exactly what I think about the Broncos. Obviously they lost at home to a divisional rival to start there year so that's a big negative for them, but after getting beaten up for most of the game, Kyle Orton and co kept getting back up and answering the bell. There is something to be said for that, but I could just as easily say that they were outplayed more than the score indicates.
26) Tennessee Titans - They played better in the second half, but were blanked in the first. They won't be very good this year, but Matt Hasselbeck may do enough to keep them good enough to miss out on the top QBs in next year's draft...
27) St. Louis Rams - The Rams aren't much different from the team that ended last year. Still a dink and dunk offense where Sam Bradford doesn't appear to have the desire or weapons to challenge teams downfield. Plus, with Danny Amendola probably done for the year, Bradford has lost his safety blanket. Add in the injuries to Bradford, Steven Jackson and Ron Bartell and it was pretty much a nightmare start for a team that had so much optimism coming into this year.
28) Seattle Seahawks - Everyone kind of laughed when the Seahawks let Matt Hasselbeck walk, stayed out of the Kevin Kolb & Kyle Orton sweepstakes and opted to go for Tarvaris Jackson as their QB. While he did manage two TD passes, he also turned the ball over three times... so the decision still makes no sense. Unless they're tanking for a high pick, in which case it's working out great. Their defense was able to limit the 49ers offense to only FGs, but then again... it was the 49ers offense.
29) Kansas City Chiefs - They didn't get included with the benefit of the doubt teams, partly because of how awful they really were and partly because they were kind of overrated last year anyway. What's worse, they lost Eric Berry for the year. They might be settling back in the basement after their one good year.
30) Cleveland Browns - Embarrassing loss at home to the Bengals, who many had pegged as the worst team in the NFL this season. The number of mental mistakes on the part of the Browns in this game was almost comical and certainly doesn't reflect well on rookie head coach Pat Shurmur, who's debut was such a disaster that even he himself was flagged for a penalty (not a joke).
31) Indianapolis Colts - Most pundits are using this game as proof of how valuable Peyton Manning is to the Colts. While admittedly the dropoff from Manning to Kerry Collins just signed off the street is almost impossible to quantify... I'll submit that the Colts wouldn't have been all that great even with Manning this year. Their defense was bad last year and is worse this season. Their offensive line is more suspect than its been in a decade and their offensive weapons are more ordinary than people realize.
32) Minnesota Vikings - Donovan McNabb threw for 39 yards in this game. He did not leave the game due to injury, he was not benched. They literally could just manage only 39 yards through the air. They only gained 187 yards total.

People that don’t read your intro are going to freak out about the Bills. I kinda like this way of doing it (like an alien was just dropped out of the sky and has no pre-formed opinion of each team).

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. They played well and Grossman had one of the highest QBR in the league.

Grossman played really well. I don’t think he can sustain that level of play an entire year but, I’ll give credit where credit is due.

Is anyone else starting to think that DMac was a system QB? Or that Andy and Marty are just that good? I want him to succeed so bad, but I just don’t know why he won’t.

He doesn’t look anywhere near as spry as he used to be. The Andy stuff factors in, but I think it’s more that he just isn’t good anymore.
He looks trimmer though!
all those big knee injuries and shots he took as an Eagles are catching up with him.
the biggest factor imo is trying to learn a new playbook. He didn’t have to all those years in Philly then he goes into these desperation situations and it has got to be difficult to adapt.

I always felt
AR and MM made D-Mac who he was. Reid has his faults but when it comes to QB’s he knows his shit. I really wished they got VY for two years because I can see Young improving as a player and maybe even find a starting gig next year.

He is certainly doing everything he can
to make a case for it. He has just been atrocious since he left. Make we wonder if Reid and co. disguised his flaws. Like spraying a gallon of cologne on yourself because you smell like BO. Or putting a Ferrari body on a camry engine. Orrrr…. putting a Versace suit on a hobo.
"I don’t know whether I prefer Astroturf to grass. I never smoked Astroturf." - Joe Namath
they are disguising Vick’s flaws quite well. Though Vick is working harder than he ever has before (it seems), Reid is masterful at designing an offense which will accentuate a QB’s strengths and hide his flaws. If Vick had signed with many other teams, he’d be a scrambling chuck and ducker, not the cool on field general we’ve mostly seen here.

Garcia looked like a champ in San Fran though.
I don’t get why everyone always seem to forget that. His success with the Eagles never surprised me. Feeley’s did though.
A handful of people is hardly everyone.
Most fans of the NFL know that Garcia had a good career before he got here.
"Even those invested in the idea that the journey is the destination may feel they've taken a train to nowhere." - Terry Lawson
I'm not so sure.
He seems to get talked about a lot as if the Eagles took someone who had never amounted to anything and made him look good. Admittedly I’m going off my own empirical evidence, but that is the general sense I get about Garcia ever since he had that run with the Eagles in 2006.
I used to be a McNabb defender until I looed up the stats of Eagles backup QBs.
Last year I made a chart about this trying to show why the Eagles would probably be a good team with Kolb or whoever at QB. In games they started, the backup combination of Feeley Koy Kolb and McMahon put up similar numbers or better to McNabb against teams that actually had a better overall winning percentage than the games started by McNabb.
Could you picture
Tim Couch being drafted instead of McNabb? What do you think Andy could do with Payton Manning?

I notice our only game against a team ranked higher than us is NE, which we play at home. Then, Chicago, also at home, ranked one below us. Since your ranking is fairly consistent with what I’m seeing elsewhere, I’m starting to wonder what the upper level is for this team in terms of wins. Too early to say 1 week in, but when I consider that the Eagles didn’t really play that well and still beat a not-horrible Rams by 18, I have to temper my excitement a little…
"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog." - Bear Bryant
Well that will depend on how the falcons bounce back, are the giants as bad as they looked, are the skins that good, can Dallas be consistent?

bengals won and steelers got whopped. but evaluating the steelers off that game is not something i would do.
i hate the steelers but I think they will destroy the seahawks in Pittsburgh. if they win by 30 you moving them from 20 to 4?

He based this solely off of this past weekend. What do you not get about that? And after next weeks game, he will DOUBLE his observation size. So could they move from 20th to 4th? I would say yea, but it would be unlikely since they are playing the lowly seahawks.
Now if they blew out the Patriots by 30+ next week, then maybe he could consider a jump up that big.

the logic is 1 game!
when has evaluating small samples proved to be an effective? Teams like the Steelers, who have most of their core players in tact, can be judged on historical performance. whereas teams that have new puzzle pieces, like the bengals, can’t be judged on last season. just holds no weight with me.

Why not move them from 20 to 4 if their play dictates it?
Why do power rankings have to be so set in stone week-to-week as opposed to a reflection of actual on-field performance? The Steelers looked downright horrible. Ranking them at 20 in this kind of poll is giving them the benefit of the doubt.
i just dont see the value in "this kind" of poll
I’d like to think evaluating would involve the fact that they have mostly the same players that were in the SB last year and they played a division rival that knows them inside and out.
its just a fluky thing, why put them at 20 when you KNOW they will shoot to top ten or top 5 in now time. I guess I am just dumb. this is pointless to argue and i am sorry i brought it up. haha.
"Grow nothing, buy the 'Pen" (Wieters Weiners)
because it’s fun. Later on in the season the power rankings will be determined for the entire body of work, so you won’t see dramatic standings like the Steelers so far down. The skins probably won’t end up that high. etc
The Jruth shall be told.
what is fun for you isnt for me
Which is fine! I was never knocking his opinion, just saying I wouldn’t do it like that.

It's just a different way to apply value to a team is all.
There is a reason the other kind of poll is so ubiquitous, but I personally appreciate seeing it done this way too since it does away with all the preconceived notions. It’s not like NFL Power Rankings mean anything anyway. Haha

majority of them are A hats and love to talk trash on the Eagles and how much Reid sucks, no SBs, Mcnabb was garbage, threw up in the SB, can’t win the big one, the Steelers won a bunch in the 70s, blah blah.

Colts, Browns and Chiefs, IMO, all deserve to be lower than the Vikings.
McNabb and his 39 yards were horrible, but Percy Harvin took a kick to the house, and AP still looked solid. Plus, their D could have given up a ton more points ot Rivers.
I think the Chiefs actually deserve the lowest spot. Beaten on Offense. Beaten on Defense. beaten up and down and all over the place. They got trounced.

gradkowski?
Why can no one watch a Bengal game before commenting on them? Dalton led them on 3 consecutive scoring drives to start the game, on the road, in his NFL debut, and they have to bench him to show they’re trying? For a guy that only had one good pass and only that when the browns were caught napping?
I like your article, fun rankings, but you’re way off on cincy.

3rd? ahead of Ravens?
Knowing there is no preseason or january influence on these ranks I kinda would have expected the Ravens ahead of us… Ravens made the Steelers look like a JV team, and did it pretty fast. Where as our OL struggled early and our run def still looked questionable. Also w/o the monster 4th quarter and that big 49 yd run, McCoy’s numbers would have only been seen as serviceable. I didn’t get out to a bar, so I was stuck w/ watching the Atl/Chi and Pit/Bal games.. and checking the Eagles in stats only, while we seemed to keep the lead after that fumble return, on paper (or rather, lit up touch screen) our numbers did not seem to overwhelm, but watching the Ravens against the Steelers was like watching a trainwreck there was NO hope in that game… everytime Pitt came close, they lost the ball.
Ravens did it at home… BUt look, if you put the Ravens above the Eagles, I wouldn’t argue.

I'd also switch 1 & 2
But only because you set this power ranking up as though we are an alien that got dropped here and this is the first time we’ve seen the game… if thats the case then Packers being the reigning champs with that shoddy of a defensive performance, in their own house, would be completely eclipsed by what the Pats did in Miami.
I can however understand power rankings having GB ahead because they began on top of the hill and the offense proved they should stay up there at least one more week, against another offensive power… To be a one yard TD (and 2 pt conversion) away from OT against the team that lost at home to Seattle in the playoffs last year… ugly start. I’m sure they’ll bounce back though.
At this point
I’d have to put the Ravens and the Bears ahead of the Eagles. I hope to see that change after week two though.
The bills at #7???
Come on, some of these are just plain disrespect
Stats won't get you in the playoffs. Winning will get you in the playoffs

To who? They won 41-7 on the road against a 2010 playoff team.

You guys don't get it.
Bills deserve top 3 spot after that performance.
just plain disrespect
I have no idea what way "the-vet" was going with his comment.
I was just messing around with my comment. For this poll, I think the Bills are adequately ranked. I look into my crystal ball and see them falling in the coming weeks, and the Vikings will rise.
And my boy Kolb is going to lead the Cards to the Title game (where they lose to the Eagles).
Yes, I’m still a Kolb-o-sexual.
I was just reading an ATL blog and....
About 90% of the fans are saying the Eagles will demolish them….lol…Calling matt Ryan a bust etc…wow.. after one game they’re tanking the season….lol… VICK pretty much scares the shit outta them.. I don’t blame them..I was gonna troll but they pretty much said everything I was gonna say >:€

Smart guys.
Falcons gameplan: Run, get behind, pass, turn the ball over, lose.
sounds good to me.

If I was shown these rankings on Saturday, I would have laughed. The NFL sure is a crazy league.

This is how college football (and basketball for that matter) ranking should be done.
No preseason bullshit. In fact, in college football I think the rankings shouldn’t even be done for the first 2 or 3 weeks. It’s just a much more honest way of looking at how teams performed versus moving teams around based on expectations.
I'll have to admit,
I’d come to expect better from BGN. Contradictions (
2010 playoff teams like the Falcons, Chiefs and Steelers looked absolutely terrible while some of the worst teams from last year like Buffalo, Carolina and Cincy looked good to competent. There’s no doubt that this abbreviated offseason has served as somewhat of an equalizer and proved that teams with stable organizations and most importantly, quarterbacks, were the ones least affected by the lockout.), and typos (
without a blowout loss in Chicago).
Somewhat interesting read but I’ve grown used to the really well written stuff that finds its way onto the front page.
Still figuring things out.
Give me a break.

These aren’t “contradictions” at all. You look for trends, but there are no rules here. I’m not saying that only stable teams looked good, just that mostly stable teams looked good.

It is a fact that there were surprises and yet most of the best teams are ones with stability. These two things are not opposite of one another.

I agree,
but you highlight 6 teams and then make that statement and the teams you highlighted don’t agree with that statement. That’s just not great writing. Sorry man. My writing gets bashed all the time. Sometimes you just say, “Yup, I should’ve said that differently.”
Again, two separate points. So how are the teams highlighted to illustrate the first point have Amy relevance to the 2nd, seperate point.
You seem to really want to see something that just isn’t there.

Flaming yawn
I get what you're saying Jason.
Its two separate points. Ok. Great.
Its just not written that way.
I'm a linguist.
I’ve studied the English language. There is nothing to indicate the second sentence is a separate point. It flows from the first as if the first gives credence to the second.

Well captain english, maybe you should take what he ACTUALLY
tried to get across as a fact rather than refute his actually point because he didn’t clearly indicate his second sentence was another point.
Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...
Wild_Eagle!
Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

Caveat: I hate power rankings
And I’m sure as hell not going to go over the tape of Sunday night’s game – but the Cowboys didn’t play nearly as well as everyone thinks they did. They had one phenomenal drive, one big play (the Witten catch and run), and a whole lot of nothing.
The Jets were awful for three quarters, so I guess you can give the ‘Boys credit for outplaying their opposition. But that shouldn’t amount to as much as it seemingly has.
OT
How many games until D. McNabb get to 517 yards and 4 TDs?
