Giants game.
OK the Giants, who in preseason, I thought were going to be our biggest competitors to get the NFC E title. They very well could be, but I found a couple of things interesting about that team.
1. Their strength is SUPPOSED to be the secondary along with a formidable D-line. Granted, they were super banged up on the line, but their high priced free agents, and "big names," were getting tuned up by guys like Anythony Armstrong, Fred Davis, an aging Moss, and Rex Grossman. Rolle, Webster, Boley, Ross were getting equally torced.
2. Just like a few of us had a little too high hopes for our O-line, I think the Giants optimism was worse. They thought David Diehl was going to be great back there, he wasn't. I was also a bit disappointed in Chris Snee who is like Jason Peters to us -- our best lineman. If Reese did do one thing right, it looks like he hit it big with David Baas at center.
3. Can we all start laughing in unison now when the Giants fans try to tell us they have a better WR corps than we do? Nicks is a beast, Manningham is good, but kinda raw when it comes to instincts a WR would have (ie not knowing where his feet are on the sideline), but there is a HUGE drop off of talent after that!!! Victor Cruz or Hixon would not even make our team. Clearly, Eli misses a reliable third down target which he's not going to get from any of those guys, nor their TEs.. Beckum is another guy who wouldn't even make most NFL teams roster. A guy they have been trying to develop for a long time.
At least Giants fans have Nicks and JPP to look forward to. These guys will be studs for a long time.
Hat tip to Jimmy K for analyzing the Redskins moves and calling it perfectly. The Redskins are much improved on defense. Their offense still doesn't instill any fear into me, but they have some guys on the defensive side of the ball who can make some plays. Mabe the Skin will be our biggest competition? OK, that's pushing it but that would be interesting.

Would never do that. But their fans did Claim their skill players are hands down more talented than ours. On offense the Giants were relatively healthy only missing Travis Beckum (who has yet to accomplish anything in his career). They will readily say Avant isn’t that good, but he is much better than any 3rd option they have, much better.

Davis and an aging Moss are pretty good targets, but yeah their secondary got torched.

Couldn't resist giving my 2 cents on this of course :)
1) The secondary: Yes it was supposed to be a strength. This was before all the injuries. The plan was for Corey Webster to start against the other team’s #1 WR. Have Aaron Ross opposite him while Prince Amukamara learned and practiced enough to take over. Terrell Thomas would work the slot, where he was lights out and ProFootballFocus’ 8th best CB in 2009 (he was worse when he moved outside last year). Bruce Johnson and Brian Witherspoon would be the key reserves at CB. Antrel Rolle would play to his strengths at strong safety because he is excellent in run support, but average in pass coverage. Kenny Phillips, fully healed from microfracture surgery, would be the free safety.
Then with all the injuries, we had Webster on one side. Webster is an excellent press corner, but only decent in zone. He relies a lot on over the top safety coverage. HOWEVER, Rolle isn’t the safety anymore. He was now the slot CB. And he is not good enough to play slot CB. That means that Deon Grant takes his spot at SS, and is only a marginal starter. Aaron Ross was horrible, I’ll give you that. Kenny Phillips was actually really good (he was the only good secondary player) on Sunday. He had a pass defensed and I believe only allowed one catch in coverage. Everybody else played like ass.
2) The OL was also ass. Well, some of them anyway. First the positives. Will Beatty. The dude allowed a couple pressures by Brian Orakpo but that’s because he’s Brian Orakpo. Still, Orakpo was held to only 3 tackles (1 solo). Chris Snee wasn’t totally on his game, but there were no complaints. Nothing really there to complement, but hey, if you are invisible and you are an OL, its a good sign. Baas had some good moments, but also some bad moments. I thought he did a worse job than most people, as he allowed way too much penetration by rookie Chris Neild. However, he started out really strong, and was overall pretty decent.
After that, there is no bad. Only ugly. David Diehl was a swinging door at LG. Pitiful performance. We were excited because he was a probowler (and a legitimate one at that) when he played last at LG. Its obvious that he is not at that form. Hopefully, he can recover because he was terrible on Sunday. Kareem McKenzie also uncharacteristically had a terrible game. The Ryan Kerrigan pick-six was mostly McKenzie’s fault. He also allowed a bunch of pressures on Eli. Not a good look at all; he needs to improve big time.
3) As far as WR corps go, I believe (hope) Giants fans were arguing about best WR corps when Steve Smith was with the Giants. It isn’t a contest now, though I will say Nicks-Manningham is an awesome duo. You are right though, in saying, there is a large drop off after that. As far as TE goes, Jake Ballard did well. Kevin Boss averaged 2.3 catches for 35.4 yards per game last year. Ballard had 2 catches for 49 yards, so he’s already outproducing Boss, haha.

Just my personal opinion
If I were a Giant fan I would not have felt good about the secondary at any point so far going into the year. Last year they were slightly better than the Eagles, and that is not good. They have been torched way to many times over the past few years to think that a rookie, who probably won’t play much, would help more than just a little. I guess he got hurt so early that any chance for a significant upgrade got delayed. We will see Amukamara soon, I hope.
I just recalled that horrible TD Kenny Phillips gave up when he whiffed on Brent Celek in the middle of the field last year.

Still, Orakpo was held
you could of stopped there. lol. I seen at least 4 incidents of blatant grabs against the guy. I mean I understand why, but just saying.

Aaron Ross kind of blows, and Ryan Kerrigan is going to be a monster sooner rather than later
I’ve never liked Manningham all that much, but he’s solid. He’s going to pick up catches because teams will have to double Nicks, who is truly turning into an elite wide receiver.
Mackenzie will be better, Diehl probably won’t be, Ross has never been and will never be good, and Mario has a great teammate and a good nickname, but no brain to speak of.
yeah, I could agree to this

I also picked this "upset"
You could easily see it coming. The skins have a team that is decent, they have a strong rookie karragan at olb and made some good moves this off season. The fact of the matter is, if you look around the NFC east, this is the only team we aren’t “built” to beat with speed and a strong pass defense. Redskins, love to run the ball and have beat us more it bad ways over the last few years. Honestly, not being cocky, but the giants as they stand now, have no chance against us, while the redskins can be trouble. The personal points me in that direction.
Stats won't get you in the playoffs. Winning will get you in the playoffs

I’m on record around here thinking that with personnel that actually fits the schemes and listens to the coaches, the Redskins really can’t regress.
I think they aren’t scary, but they’ll be tough to beat.

I hate that they're starting to hit on their first-rounders
Orakpo and now Kerrigan? C’mon, Snyder. Draft more bad wide outs!
Trent Williams was a good pick, too.
"Even those invested in the idea that the journey is the destination may feel they've taken a train to nowhere." - Terry Lawson
They often drafted good first-rounders
going back to Landry, Rogers and Campbell, who were all decent to good, and Taylor.
It was their complete lack of second, third and fourth rounders for several straight years that left them without any homegrown depth.
I mean we complain when Tony Hunt or Bryan Smith or Matt McCoy flamed out. Shoot, imagine not even having a pick to blow.

In fairness to Giants fans
I believe the comments claiming they had the best receiveing corps was before Smith left them to join you all.
as for the skins, I have thought for a while they would be much improved from last year.
Regarding the race for the East: I think its Cowboys and Eagles. The Cowboys front 7 looked good (lot’s of pressure and stopped the run), and while the DBs were severely hampered (number 4 and 5 on depth chart out there for most of the game), they held their own. I know you all like to hate on Romo, and he deserves it for last night. But he has a stinker every now and then. I am confident he will be solid the rest of the way (in fact he had a great game for 3.5 quarters against a great D).

Since you are a Cowboys fan
and you make note of your front 7 how do you think they will do against, say, a powerhouse QB? Obviously, Sanchez is just tad bit overrated so do you think they are dominant against say the likes of Vick or even a more pocketpasser like say Drew Brees?
A good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week-Patton
I would go to battle any time with these guys-MV7
Let me add a little here
1-for Trickster: While Sanchez is eh the Jets O line is phenomenally better then ours. Still I think we can outscheme them.
2-for Rising: Your front 7 can be good, but until Romo releases the death grip he has on his own throat, you guys are going to struggle.

Well, I said our front 7 "looked" good
As in, I am not claiming they will be dominant all year. I am hopeful, but not certain. Our problem has always been the DEs not getting pressure. It was always up to Ware and Ratliff. If Rob Ryan’s scheme makes the others better at pressure, then I think we will be in a good position. Also, if you watched the game, you have to agree that Sean Lee looked great and should add a lot over Brooking.
So, against a great pocket passer I see us matching up well. Of course, it will depend on the DBs, but they did all right against Sanchez (granted, its Sanchez). Against Vick, who knows. Between Ware, Spencer and now Sean Lee stepping up, I am more confident that we have athletic enough guys to contain him when he wants to take off. Otherwise, if he stays in the pocket, we just have to keep hitting him.

I thought your team looked better than the Jets for the majority of the night on Sunday
But that’s not exactly a compliment, because the Jets looked horrible. No pass rush to speak of on far too many plays, a lot of Cro-sucktitude, Sanchize being Sanchize, a non-existent approach and commitment to the running game, and still the ‘Boys didn’t really take advantage of it.
That might be the worst game the Jets play all year (and no, it’s not because Rob Ryan’s ‘exotic’ schemes confused the offense; there was very little pressure on Sanchez all night). And Dallas let them win. That’s gotta be a really tough pill to swallow going forward.
Actually
there was a lot of pressure on Sanchez (four sacks and several hits just as he threw it out). Also, I think they couldn’t run on us. I don’t think it was a matter of them not being committed. And Sanchez didn’t make a bad throw all night. He played well. I agree he is average and overrated, but I was surprised by how he played.

Totally Eagles vs Cowboys this year
With the Redskins possibly stealing something in the end…

The Cowboys looked like...the Cowboys
A team with a lot of dead cap space.
They did not look good on Sunday. They’ll win against the Niners this week, everyone will proclaim they’ve arrived, and then splat.
Possibly
They do have some serious weapons though. Bryant, Witten will create match up problems, so will Austin…. Their D…if they dont get pressure — they will be a huge question for sure… Iw ouldnt sleep on big D
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
They have a couple elite offensive players
But the team seemingly stopped themselves far more often than the Jets did for three quarters – and then the Cowboys flat-out went out of their way to assist the Jets in procuring the victory.
I am not going to draw any sort of conclusion from the way the Cowboys defense played, because they got pretty banged up, and it was against the Sanchize.
I fully expect them to destroy the 49ers (and if not, LOL) and for the mass media to jump back on their nuts. However, the five-game stretch following the San Francisco tilt will determine their season. I’ll be awfully intrigued to see how the team matches up week after week against quality opposition.
They DID look good... for the first 3 quarters
At least good enough to beat the Jets.
But alas, Football is a 4 quarter sport.

I didn't see what you saw
I saw one good drive (the first one) followed by mediocrity.
A whole lot of mediocrity.
They were beating the Jets by 2 scores until Romo pulled a 'Romo'

And, if you re-watch the tape, it's more a function of the Jets playing poorly then it is the Cowboys lighting the world on fire
I understand the desire to play up rivals so we don’t seemingly get sucked into the notion that they’re all bad.
And the Cowboys might still yet prove that they are, in fact, a contender this year. I’m just saying I didn’t see much (again, other than the initial drive) to indicate that during the game on Sunday night.
Heh you've got your opinion, I've got mine
I saw the Cowboys outplay the Jets for 75% of the game.

I gotta tell you Joe,
everything else I’ve read says that Baas was anything from mediocre to horrible. I’d like to believe your assessment, since I was too captivated by the ducks flying out of Sheli’s hands to watch Baas, but is everyone else wrong?

Yes, I read that too… But I’l be honest I was only watching him in the 1st qtr and he was beating Coefield pretty easily. I kinda lost track 2nd half, wer ehe supposedly was getting killed
