Eagles Vs Rams Inactives: Steve Smith Will Play

The Eagles have released their list of inactives for today. Vince Young, Curtis Marsh, Jaiquwan Jarrett, Danny Watkins, Julian Vandervelde, Winston Justice and Phillip Hunt. That means that WR Steve Smith will dress and will play here in week one, which is of course something the Giants did not expect to see.

The only real notable inactive here is Vince Young, who won't be able to go after suffering a hamstring strain in the final preseason game. That said, he is the backup QB and hopefully wouldn't have played anyway... It is a bit of a bummer to see both the first and second round picks from this year as inactives, but then again given the super abbreviated offseason maybe that's to be expected this year more than any other.

King Dunlap and Jamaal Jackson are the only backup offensive lineman dressed today. Dunlap will backup the tackle spots, while Jamaal Jackson will backup pretty much everyone else. The Rams inactives are after the jump and include five of the six players they drafted in the first round.

And tell me again the difference between a 1st rd draft pick and a 7th on Sundays?

by VRFC8 on Sep 11, 2011 11:56 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions   1 recs

couple things here

1… Eagles did a great job in FA picked up other good options to add depth to safety & OL.
2… CBA drastically reduced early round rookie wages, meaning there is less push to start them immediately.

Bonus 3 (not really, just question), I knew Watkins wasn’t starting, but was surprised bout him not dressing.. I’ve not been on as often in last 2 weeks (baby) did I miss something?

by Sparki on Sep 11, 2011 12:02 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

not really

mostly only that Mudd will start his 5 best guys and he doesnt care what anybody else (including Andy) thinks about it….

I'm not sure

…How that really goes against the two points I made.. really just a good 3rd point to add to the mix. We covered the position in FA, he’s not being paid enough to make playing him feel mandatory, and Muddy feels we have a better alternative. All good reasons to not freak about the FO not starting our 1st rounder.

by Sparki on Sep 12, 2011 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

are any of the guys not dressing for STL impact guys?

by phillies0100 on Sep 11, 2011 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

I would say

Quinn was our 1st round pick and some day a good rusher. But he missed an entire year of football last year. So I guess they consider him not ready. Danario Alexander is kind of a surprise because he has shown plus talent in the past. He was our tallest WR also.

Also third round pick Pettis

you don't think...

…Watkins not even dressing after going the entire preseason (unheld out portion) as the projected starter is not alarming? Especially since his age was given to us as a positive as “experienced”.

Not really, given that he’s an offensive lineman. They don’t dress a lot of backup OL. So if you’re not starting, there’s a good chance you’ll be inactive.

I still think the lack of OTA’s hurt all rookies in the offseason, especially a guy trying to learn new blocking schemes and a new position.

we were told when they drafted danny watkins that he was a smart tough kid who will come in right away that there wont be a learning curve. thats what the haters of this pick including myself were told.

now as a rebuttal for why hes not starting is that he didnt get enough time to gel and learn this offense and adjust to the NFL. however jason kelce and casey matthews are starting today.

you need to throw this kid into the fire just like they did with winston justice. 27 year old RG 1st round selection that is not even dressing is inexcusable

well i know the season hasn’t even started and im not 100% sure whats going on with watkins but when you draft a right guard so high at the age of 27 because he is NFL ready from day 1 and now he isn’t even dressing how are we supposed to wrap our heads around that? 1st round selections in the NFL draft are supposed to be impact players unless QB’s from day one. Guards and Centers are hardly ever taken in the first round unless their considered a lock to start.

by greenismean on Sep 11, 2011 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions

And give up six sacks in a game?

Yeah, if Justice taught us anything, it was that learning under fire was the wrong thing to do.

by cwel87 on Sep 11, 2011 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

winston justice showed me andy reid isnt very good at drafting lineman lol

by greenismean on Sep 11, 2011 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

And thus it begins with Phillip Hunt following in the tradition of other Na Brown award winners, being mostly inactive or relegated to special teams during the regular season.

by Rujasu on Sep 11, 2011 11:56 AM EDT reply actions

How do you figure? If they dont plan on rushing the passer that much, why would they need him? He’s a rusher specialist, thats it… they have other DEs that can play both the run and the pass

like Jason said, they don’t dress that many backup OL to begin with. Jackson can do guard or center, and dunlap tackle. Do you need to waist a spot for another backup guard?

How many rookie offensive linemen are playing this week? Zero? One?

Cris Collinsworth nailed it in the Saints-Packers game. This lockout hurt the OL rookies the most, apparently. I am concerned about the OL when we play a team like the Packers or the Jets, but in Mudd We Trust.

We finally will get to see what we have. I will make the bold prediction our lbs will be blitzed a lot early. This will slow the run and get the young lb confidence early. he just wasn’t used to playing off the ball, he was always used to having the ball in his hand and Ohio. He was lost early in the season, but at the end of the season he was putting up some good stat lines, and always played good D.
