Sound the alarms! The Eagles are RECKLESS!!!
A few weeks ago, KC Joyner of ESPN wowed us with his own proprietary set of metrics that proclaimed the Giants would win the division because they led the league in "Comp+CTCHBCITBDHTG adjusted factor." For those of you who don't know football, CTCHBCITBDHTG stands for "Completions that could have been caught if the ball didn’t hit the ground."
Then Matt Bowen of the National Football Post informed us that Rob Ryan was going to implement an aggressive defense, and would even attack the line of scrimmage, as well as opposing protection schemes. Seems like a great idea. Bowen deducted that Ryan would be the missing piece that would bring the Cowboys to NFC East supremacy. Hard to argue there. Rob Ryan coached defenses have never won a division title in his career, but this that's going to change. Just because.
But surely, nobody was going to make a case for the Redskins, right? Well, somebody did, and in 140 characters or less! Credit Pro Football Talk's Evan Silva with noting that:
After reckless turnover in lockout year, #Eagles big obstacle is exponentially improved NFCE. #Cowboys dangerous. #Redskins run O, D legit.
Tim Hightower, Ryan Torain... Stars. And that D... Sure, the Eagles put up 59 points on the Skins in 3 quarters Week 10 last year, but everyone forgets that the Skins shut them out in the 4th quarter of that game. Look it up. Shut them the eff out. In fact, the Redskins outscored the Eagles 7-0 in the 4th quarter of that game. It was like the Eagles quit. Quitters.
Silva also brings up a great point about the Eagles' reckless acquisition of players in free agency, and it's hard to disagree.
- I had thought that trading Kevin Kolb for Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a 2nd round pick was a good move, but while DRC may have more talent, Dimitri Patterson brought continuity. You simply can't teach continuity. Reckless!
- And then the Eagles sign Nnamdi Asomugha! At first I was like "Asante Samuel! Nnamdi Asomugha! DRC! Holy shit! How are people going to pass against this defense?" But then reality set in, and the reality is that the Eagles are now too talented at corner, so it won't work. Reckless!
- I was also sort of excited about bringing in pass rush specialists Jason Babin on the outside and Cullen Jenkins on the interior. But now I'm wondering if they'll forget how to get to the QB. I mean think about it - Quick... What did you have for breakfast yesterday? See? Seeeeeeee?!?!? Remembering isn't easy. Reckless!
- Ronnie Brown? Can catch, run, and pass block, 3 qualities the Eagles like in their RBs, but he'll never be able to replace the contributions of Jerome Harrison last season. Reckless!
- And then the Eagles signed Steve Smith! Worst... 4th WR... ever. Reckless!
OK, breaking character...
Look, the Eagles are far from invincible, and I get that people are going to try to suggest why Dallas or the Giants or even the Redskins are going to win the division for the sake of being provocative. Wanna talk about the Eagles' interior OL? Fine. Wanna take that interior OL thing to the next step by questioning Vick's ability to stay healthy? Alright. Their youthful and shaky LBs? Fine. Their rookie K/P combo? Ehhh, now you're reaching a little, but OK.
But please, give me something a little more concrete than "almost interceptions," defensive coordinator gurus that have done jack shit in their careers, or anything relating to the Redskins... at all. Thank you.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...
Wild_Eagle!
Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

Safety would another place where you could legitimately attack the Eagles, but no made up hyperbole nonsense is much better.
Btw, Brian Baldinger said on the fanatic that the Redskins were the best team in the division.

How could a guy who watches plenty of games and film possibly think somethng like that… Thank God that’s not really a factor in whether a team can win it all. At least so I’m told. LOL

What makes you say this? I interned for FOX sports a couple years back, and most of the “experts” assistants/friends/co-workers always told how little gamefilm TV analysts/experts watch. 85% of the arguments, debates, conversations on NFL network, ESPN, Fox, etc are scripted.

Well
Since I see him breaking down film on NFL Playbook with Mayock and Sharpe… That makes me say he watches the film. But maybe you know better…

That Baldinger doesn’t watch film in an attempt to deny me my point is very “TRY HARD”… Personally I just would like to stick to reasonable football convo… If I can’t have that with you then I’ll stay away from your posts and ask you to do the same with mine. Thank you sir.

Alternative reality
Did I land in some alternative reality where the NFC East really improved that much this offseason?
What NFC East team is really poised to improve over their record from last year besides maybe the Boys picking a few games? Even if they do, they really have a team capable of winning more than 10 games?
The Giants are going to win more than 10 games this year? Skins are going to win 9-10 games and be a playoff contender?
Don’t think the Eagles are as good as they are hyped nor do I think they will win 12 or 13 games & dominant teams like they did in ‘04 during the regular season. As long as Vick stays healthy and on the field, this team is going to win the NFC East. Just don’t see where there is another team in this division capable of winning 11+ games (which is a lot harder when you look back at regular seasons since the current alignment).
I agree
I don’t think the Cowboys are a better team than they were last year, although I think their record will improve (if that makes any sense). I don’t think they’re a 6-10 team, but not a real threat for the division title either. The Giants will remain tough, even though we’ve had their number as of late. They can win one or both of their games against us this year. And I think the Skins will prove to be formidable but their quarterback situation will be their Achilles’ heel. None of our divisional opponents are superior (or even on par), but they will all pose a significant challenge to us on Gameday, but not for the division title.

Remember
The Cowboys went 5-3 down the stretch (and were one Roy Williams fumble at the end of a game from being 6-2). I know one of those victories were against an Eagles team resting a lot of people, but then it was our 3rd string QB in there as well. I think the offensive line is improved, as will be the running game. The D is a big question mark (and right now I am not sold on Rob Ryan). If the D gels and is solid, I think the Cowboys could be a real threat. Not saying they will win it, but they can be a team to contend for it.

actually......
All 4 of the teams in the division should have better records than last year as they play the NFC west this year…. The only team in that division thas is even remotely scarry is thr Rams.
I would love to blow up Texas Stadium... With team still in it
36 plus years of rooting for the Eagles I think are comming to fruition this year.

Love the Skins are getting from some people this preseason
Baffles me. You need at least a competent QB to win 10 games in the NFL. Beck/Grossman aren’t it. Not with their defense and special teams.
The one thing favoring them is a favorable schedule with the likes of Carolina, Buffalo, SF, and Seattle on their schedule with a few other winnable games.
If you told me the Skins could go 2-2 or even 3-1 in those 4 games, I wouldn’t think you are that crazy. Just need to find a way to win at least 4 games in the NFC East to be a legit contender in the NFC East division race. Don’t see that happening. Maybe 3 wins.
I think Beck can manage a game
And I think Hightower is going to have a great season for them, so I can see them squeak out some ugly slugfest games.

The only difference in opponents...
is from the NFC North and South. The whole NFC East has Buffalo, Seattle, San Fran, etc. on their schedule.
Eagles: Bears/Falcons
Giants: Packers/Saints
Cowboys: Lions/Bucs
Redskins: Vikings/Panthers
This whole ‘softer schedule’ thing when debating division winners thing is way overblown. I think the NFC North playing the NFC South favors us, as their top teams are likely to knock each other down and make HFA easier for us to get, but we still gotta take care of our business.

Hmmm. I believe this was on an episode of the office. Right?
Eagles... :)
Very time-tested philosophy
I think it goes right alongside “love thy neighbor as thyself” and “honesty is the best policy.”
The "What If" logic applied to last season should favor the Eagles more than anyone else...
Did the Giants ever drop a whole game? If Avant doesn’t toss away that perfectly thrown hail mary pass in the first skins game, the Eagles get the second seed.
Chicago racked up half of their yards after Eagles defenders slipped on their garbage field. If the Eagles didn’t fumble at the goal line at the Tennesse game, that’s another win.
Running Vick up the middle on 4th and 1 in Week 1? Seriously? Akers missing two FG’s in the playoff game… UGH! And throwing a jump ball on first and 10 with only 20 yards to go… seriously?
Oh and don’t get me started on the Vikings game… it still pisses me off to no end that they postponed that game. Instead of seeing a magical, epic snow game that the players were psyched to play in, they’re told to sit around two more days and come out flat.
The "What If" game is fun to play
even though it’s of no particular use. Don’t forget the biggest “What If” that the Eagles gifted to the Packers. If a miracle didn’t happen in the Meadowlands, the Packers don’t even make the playoffs. All due credit to the Packers for taking advantage of their opportunity, especially with all their injuries.
We need a few things to break our way for sure, as do all teams. It seems that we get the short end of that stick, but in reality we have had quite a few fortuitous events over the last couple of years i.e. 4&26th, 44-6 which was only possible as a result of Bears’ and Bucs’ losses earlier that day, and Miracle at the New Meadowlands. We just can’t seem to convert those lucky breaks into the ultimate prize.

Why does no one mention
That the Eagles are not alone int turning their line over to unproven and rookie starters? Last I checked, Dallas has 3 young’uns up front and the Giants are turning theirs over as well.
The Eagles have question marks, but so does every team. Steelers have a suspect line, Giants have a so-so linebacking corps and a sudden lack of talent in the secondary. People are just getting in line to go after the Eagles, and their using sloppy logic to defend it.
See? Seeeeeeeeee?

I agree with all of your points
But let’s not pretend like the Skins didn’t beat us at home last year in demoralizing fashion, that they usually found a way for their supposedly mediocre RBs to run all over us, and that we give Fred Davis the games of his life (hell, even James Thrash). The Redskins aren’t close to the same team we are, but they always find a way to beat us.
I couldn't do anything but laugh at that...
Especially the part homeboy was talking about how The Eagles looked like they ‘quit’ in that Monday night game versus the ‘skins. They didn’t quit, they just felt bad. That game could’ve easily been 75-0. It would be unsportsman like if the score was ran up like that. I can almost taste the hate… smh lol

Who is hyping up the Eagles?
The national media (i.e. non-Eagles fans who bring up the Santa incident before anything else Philly-related in a convo)
Who is saying that the Eagles are overhyped?
The national media.
Sure, Vince Young and Jason Babin expressed excitement about their new teammates and confidence in the fact that they were in a good situation.
Of course, they are the first free agents to ever do that.
The media creates this hype, then breaks it down.

Awesome stuff Jimmy.
People think that adding Nnamdi Asomugha, DRC, Babin, Jenkins, Brown, etc. and maintaining virtually the same youthful talented division winning team, and yet they say we’ve regressed.
Where’d all the rational people go?
I guess the glory that was the Philadelphia Eagles off-season counter-acts the dump that was the Flyers. Hmph.
We are reckless and we're coming for you!
Asante grabbing interceptions is totally reckless. So are DeSean’s long runs after the catch. So is having running backs less than 6 feet tall. So is putting DNA in the same defensive backfield. And don’t forget the 3 starters who are former 7th-rounders (Fokou, Chaney, Coleman). Plus it’s extremely reckless to take back one of your former castoffs after he improved radically in another system (never mind that we changed system too).
Yes, we are reckless – but it’s the opposition that is going to feel WRECKED once we have our reckless way with them.

I haven’t been a lot of places on BGN, but I have been to multiple forums on multiple websites and I can honestly say that the style of writing that you all have mixed with the only slightly biased opinion on your team, combined with your knowledge of the game is what separates this site from others and a large part of the success of this site.
