Locks, bubble boys, and difficult cuts: A far too early look at the 31 players fighting for the final 13 roster spots

Unless they can invent some sort of injury for Curtis Marsh so that he can be stashed away on the IR list, the Eagles may face a very difficult decision between Marsh and Trevard Lindley.

After attending Eagles training camp for a week, I thought it might be fun to figure out which guys are locks, which guys are on the bubble, and what camp battles remain to be fought.  After putting it all down on paper, I reached a very disheartening conclusion - The Eagles are going to have to cut a lot of good players.  First, lets get the locks out of the way.  I should note that these locks don't factor in potential trades. For example, if there's a crunch at DE, the Eagles could consider trading Juqua Parker and his $3.5 million salary, but I highly doubt they'd just cut him outright. The same could be said for others like Joselio Hanson, or even Asante Samuel if a "too good to turn down" offer presented itself.  The locks:

Locks - Offense

QB - Michael Vick, Vince Young, Mike Kafka (3)

RB - LeSean McCoy, Ronnie Brown (2)

FB - No locks

WR - DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Riley Cooper (4)

TE - Brent Celek, Clay Harbor (2)

OT - Jason Peters, Winston Justice, Ryan Harris (3)

OG - Todd Herremans, Danny Watkins (2)

C - Jamaal Jackson (1)

Locks on offense - 17

Star-divide

Locks - Defense

DE - Trent Cole, Jason Babin, Brandon Graham (may start season on PUP list), Darryl Tapp, Juqua Parker (5)

DT - Cullen Jenkins, Mike Patterson, Antonio Dixon, Trevor Laws (4)

LB - Jamar Chaney, Moise Fokou, Casey Matthews, Keenan Clayton (4)

CB - Nnamdi Asomugha, Asante Samuel, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Joselio Hanson (4)

S - Nate Allen, Kurt Coleman, Jaiquawn Jarrett (3)

Locks on defense - 20

Locks - Special Teams

K - Alex Henery (1)

P - Chas Henry (1)

LS - Jon Dorenbos (1)

Locks on special teams - 3

Total locks - 40

Here's where it gets really tricky.  Last year around this time, there were probably about 20 or so players "on the bubble."  This year I have 31 players fighting for the remaining 13 spots, meaning that 18 bubble players are going to be cut. That's what happens when you draft 10+ players every year.  The best players from your draft classes survive, but there are some legitimate NFL caliber casualties that simply can't fit onto the roster.

Here are my bubble players.  Keep in mind that they are fighting against all the bubble players, not just those players at their individual positions.  Plus, they also have to worry about guys getting cut from other teams around the league that the Eagles could potentially pick up, not to mention... free agency still isn't even over.  The bubble boys:

On the bubble - Offense

QB - Nobody on the bubble

RB - Dion Lewis, Eldra Buckley, Graig Cooper (3)

FB - Owen Schmitt, Stanley Havili (2)

WR - Chad Hall, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Sinorice Moss (3)

TE - Donald Lee (1)

OT - King Dunlap, Austin Howard, Fenuki Tupou (3)

OG - Julian Vandervelde, Evan Mathis (2)

C - Jason Kelce, Mike McGlynn (G/C) (2)

On the bubble - Defense

DE - Daniel Te'o-Nesheim, Phillip Hunt (2)

DT - Cedric Thornton, Anthony Hargrove (2)

LB - Brian Rolle, Akeem Jordan, Greg Lloyd, Rashad Jeanty (4)

CB - Trevard Lindley, Curtis Marsh, Brandon Hughes (3)

S - Marlin Jackson, Colt Anderson, Jarrad Page, Jamar Adams (4)

K/P/LS - Nobody on the bubble.

Obviously, this look is really early, especially since the Eagles have yet to even play a preseason game, and this list remains very fluid, of course.  This is just how I see it so far after a week and a half of camp.  Think of it as a menu.  Which 13 of these guys make your list, and are there any guys not listed that make your final 53?

There is no way the Eagles part with Curtis Marsh or Trevard Lindley. They’re going 6 deep at corner. And I don’t have a problem with it because look at the weapons that Green Bay is trotting out:
Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Jones, Cobb and Finley.

You have to have depth at corner to stick with the Packers and Saints, the two biggest things standing between the Eagles and a Lombardi trophy.

6 CBs is certainly a possibility (they kept that many last year), but it’s not a lock.

I hope it’s a lock because if we part with Lindley or Marsh it would be a bad move. I bet the Eagles go thin at linebacker because it seems like they want to do what the Packers do and use the nickel package a lot.

And it upsets me that Parker is a lock, we just can’t get rid of that guy.

I think Juqua will benefit from being more of rotational player this year. I thought he looked sharp last year in the beginning of the year (since he seems to wear down as the season goes on, like all players, but to more of an extent), especially when he was sharing time with BG.

Other teams can sign practice squad members. Marsh will make the team.. you’re more likely to see a CB like Hughes, Trufant, or Wall make the practice squad. One of those 3 has potential btw, sadly I get them confused so I don’t remember which it was, Hughes I think?

I noticed Ingram is not on the bubble, in your mind is he already out of here? Or might he end up on the practice squad again. Did he even look healthy at camp?

by Ben16 on Aug 6, 2011 10:11 AM EDT reply actions

He has made a few catches here and there, but I think Donald Lee is ahead of him. A very real possibility is that the Eagles may opt to only keep 2 TEs. Ingram’s primary competition isn’t just Lee, but guys at other positions.

Not true.

I think we are agreeing with each other, Mudd made a decision… to move him from 1st team to 3rd team. That coupled with his horrid performance at 1st team is a good indication of where his chances are at making the 53 man roster.

Hall is getting tons of reps, and he was on the team for the entire season last year. No question he has a shot, like it or not (and I’m not a fan, personally).

Marlin Jackson is also getting a ton of reps, running primarily with the 1’s and 2’s. Personally, I think Marlin has looked gimpy and slow, but I can’t ignore the reps.

Is there any chance Dorenbos goes in order to get another OL in there? I seem to remember McGlynn getting reps at LS either last season or the one before. Someone like him on Kelce could be put in there for competition to make the squad deeper.

by holdsoftheships on Aug 6, 2011 10:34 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

No chance Dorenbos is cut. None. Andy Reid values the position too much… and he should. Frankly, I’m not sure McGlynn makes it anyway if camp ended today.

The Eagles have never cut a 3rd round draft pick during his rookie season. In fact I can only think of 2 times when that has ever happened in the NFL. Curtis Marsh is a lock.

Huh? I was getting ready to argue that Lee is a much better blocker.. than I came upon this..

“Lee is an undersized veteran who has developed into a solid target for the Packers. He has good speed, balance and agility as a route runner as well as good hands to be a reliable receiver on short and intermediate patterns. Lee has courage and concentration in traffic to make tough grabs away form his frame. He has quickness and agility in and out of his breaks and understands how to use his long arms and burst to get separation. Lee appears to have maxed out his potential as an NFL tight end and will yield his starting role and playing time to the younger Jermichael Finley.” – ESPN Insider Scouting Report

So ya I guess it doesn’t matter who gets that 2nd TE spot either way,

Sheldon Brown Vs. Reggie Bush
What did it feel like? That collision, I didn't feel nothing, because he was pretty much defenseless. It was like running through a cardboard box. Seriously. Cardboard box."

That’s because he is. According to PFF, he is the 11th best blocking TE in their 2008-2010 grade. Allowing just 8 pressures in 153 blocking snaps.

by Route36 on Aug 6, 2011 12:53 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

153 blocking snaps in three seasons? Yeah, like I said, he isn’t a good blocker, the Packers didn’t even trust him to block.

Just because he wasn’t used a lot, doesn’t mean the Packers didn’t trust him to block. Does it change the fact that he was still 11th in pass blocking efficiency? Lee is pretty widely known as a good blocking tight end.

I think you're underestimating just how badly the man mutilated his leg

While teams have been known to take a flyer on players they feel have a lot of talent and a chance to recover from those kinds of injuries, this year’s draft was a particularly deep one.

I’m not saying he deserved to be drafted…but Marques Colston was almost an UDFA. He’s a pretty fair comp in terms of measurables. You can’t bring the bias of draft slots to a camp – the rookies are the rookies, and the players who are all clawing and scraping their way to an NFL roster are in the same boat.

by cwel87 on Aug 6, 2011 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

This is such a poorly worded post
While teams have been known to take a flyer on players they feel have a lot of talent and a chance to recover from those kinds of injuries, this year’s draft was a particularly deep one.

Teams who would have taken a flyer on him in years past had other targets who were much lower risk. Also, he’s a bit of a baby.

You can’t bring the bias of draft slots to a camp – the rookies are the rookies, and the players who are all clawing and scraping their way to an NFL roster are in the same boat.

Players are obviously drafted according to their perceived talent, so there’s going to be unintentional bias in this sort of evaluation – Danny Watkins will make the team, for example, because he’s a really good football player and deserves a slot – but we knew that coming into camp. It’s the players who are drafted from about the 4th round on where the talent kind of melds together, and it’s just about who can contribute to the team more.

Brown has the potential to a dimension not seen in Philadelphia since Howard Carmichael, strictly based off the sheer size he could bring to red zone packages. I don’t think we can underestimate that kind of niche role, undrafted free agent be damned.

Much better!

wasn't billy mcmullen supposed to be that?

he had TO’s size etc., just hands of stone that could be taught better. I forget, maybe that’s a bad comp, but I would think Brown should at least get a spot on the PS based on your report, and I personally would love to keep Brown if he ends up having a camp as good as Cooper’s.

by Alon on Aug 6, 2011 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I was gong to say the same thing.

I like the size and speed. And after being big man on campus I think the guy has something to prove. Better he proves it with the Eagles than against the Eagles. I really hope Brown makes the team. Very rarel do you get a 6’6" WR with 4.4 speed in the nfl.

Offense

Pretty good list for the locks… the rest can only be determined by their preseason play… but if we had to guess now, I would say

1. I’d like to see if Havili can offer something different / better than Schmitt (+1).

2. I think they keep 6 wr’s – one on the bubble list (unsure who) and hopefully one from the free agents / semi-retired list (+2).

3. I think the surprise is going to come out of the TE’s – Brent Celek isn’t as great as some people might think he is, he is good but not great yet, this year will show if he’s going to step it up a level or not, I don’t know if a great tight end is on the squad… but I think they keep 3 tight ends, Lee or Ingram (+1)

4. Winston Justice is a big question mark on the o-line, I definitely see them keeping the guys they drafted this year in Kelce and Vanderwelde and the Guard they picked up Evan Mathis. The rest will be just backing up, so it won’t make a difference who makes it, but all in all, 10 o-linemen, so thats (+4).

That’s 8 additions to the offense, which brings the total upto 25.

Celek has had some drops though, maybe due to his thumb (?) last season, but I’d like to see less drops early on. If he isn’t looking focused I could see Harbor starting.

by Michael Jorden on Aug 6, 2011 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

While drops were part of the problem, the most significant reason for his lack of production was that the Eagles were keeping him in to block more often.

My guys

Let me say that I haven’t been to camp so a lot of my opinion is based on what I’ve read.

FB -Schmitt – he did a great job last year blocking. I like his toughness/psychoness
RB – Graig Cooper – from his bio and what Jimmy has reported he sounds like a great addition.
WR – Higgens – A good KR option
TE – Lee – He is a beast of blocker. We need that for goal line and short yardage downs.
OT – they all stink. If they had to start I would worried for our backs lives.
OG – Mathis – He sounds good:)
C – McGlyn I liked him last year.

DE – Te’O – I just want them to be right. And I know Evil Banner hates him. EB is funny when he’s mad!
DT – Hargrove – bc he has experience.
LB – Jeanty – from what Jimmy wrote he seems like a bad ass.
DB – Lindley and Marsh the young bucks!
S – Not sure I like any of these guys. Throwing a dart and saying Colt.

1. I think they keep 5 cb’s, either Samuel or Hanson goes (traded), Marsh and Lindley stay (+1)

2. I think they keep 6 d-ends, hopefully Hunt and Teo make it, not sure if both Parker and Tapp remain with what they are making (+1)

3. D-tackle, Mike Patterson might go on IR, just 4 d-tackles though, between one of the new guys they just got or someone we might not know of.

4. Have to keep 4 safeties, Page or Marlin (+1)

5. And 6 lb’s – Lloyd and Rolle or another free agent (+2)

Thats 5 additions to the defense, which brings us to 25 on defense.

The 3 special teamers are a lock as was stated in the post. I’m still hoping for an addition or two to the team via free agency. You know Howie never stops looking.

McGlynn, Curtis and Marsh are locks.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Wild_Eagle!

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

I would have agreed with this pre-camp 100%. But he seems to have disappeared off the map. I haven’t heard his name once… I think Eagles have too much film on him and already know his max potential. If Kelce is as good at Center as everyone says then there’s no reason to keep McGlynn.

Roster...

QB: Vick, Young, Kafka
RB: Shady, Brown, Lewis, Buckley
FB: Schmitt
WR: DJacc, Mac, Avant, Cooper, Moss
TE: Celek, Lee
OT: Peters, Harris, Justice, Dunlap
OG: Herremans, Watkins, Mathis, McGlynn
C: Jackson, Kelce

DE: Cole, Babin, Tapp, DTO, Hunt
DT: Jenkins, Laws, Dixon, Patterson (Hargrove Patterson Pending)
OLB: Fokou, Chaney, Clayton, Jeanty
MLB: Matthews, Jordan
CB: Nnamdi, Asante, DRC, Hanson, Lindley, Marsh
S: Allen, Page
S: Jarrett, Coleman

K: Alex
P: Chas
LS: Dorenbos

Due to the acquisition of Jeanty, Anderson or Buckley becomes expendable. It will go down to preseason play but for right now I have Buckley on the team. The hardest cuts were made along the D-Line and the final spot on it will go to DTO over Hargrove. However, preseaon play will determine this outcome, and it seems as though Washburn wants him to succeed.

What about Landri?

by Dave King on Aug 6, 2011 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

Potential Upsets on the final roster (my predictions)

I agree with most of what you wrote, with the exceptions/notes below:

Colt Anderson (90% to make the team) his special teams contribution is invaluable. Also, safeties blow at WR vs. CB drills, so don’t read into his performance there. He could show some improvement at safety in preseason games. I think he’s as close to a lock on the team as you can get for his position on the depth chart.

Cooper (75%, not a lock) has had a really lack-luster camp, how committed to him are we? I wouldn’t be surprised if his spot is lost unless he has a big preseason game. If he was 3 inches shorter, he would’ve already been cut last year.

Chad Hall (25% to make the team) – Once again, he’s the talk of a lot of training camp reports. He performs way better in drills than on the field vs people twice his size. Don’t get your hopes up, he’s getting cut again this year unless there are injuries.

Curtis Marsh (100% to make the team) – He’s a 3rd rnd pick playing 2nd team D with DRC right now ahead of Lindley. Lindley would be gone before him, but I think we’ll trade Hanson instead of cutting Lindley.

Juqua Parker/Joselio Hanson (Trade em!) 4 mil and 2 mil salaries in crowded positions.

Hunt and Teo both make the team with JP traded – With no JP trade, I see Hunt going to practice squad and Teo getting 1 last chance.

Well we have Cooper who's 6'2 has like a 38in vert, runs a 4.4 and is the master of jump balls.

I’d go with Cooper over DeAndre Brown. DB is practice squad material.

And no 4.6 is slow for a WR when everybody keeps saying he’s got 4.4 speed. If he was that big and ran a 4.4 he would’ve been drafted in the first round injury or not.

RB: Cooper (or TE: Webb)
FB: Havili
WR: Jones (small WR)
WR: Brown (possession WR)
OL: Kelce (Vandervelde)
DT: Thornton
LB: Rolle
DB: Wall? (or DL: Hunt)

ST: Henery, Henry, Dorenbos
PUP: Graham

Notes:
Agree with others that Parker and Hanson could be traded for Hunt and Rolle.
I think Jamal Jackson could be traded. I do not think he fits Mudd’s style (certainly not ‘quick footed’). High risk but, I could see Kelce the starter and maybe Shipley the backup, with McGlynn kept around if the playcalling is too complicated.
Vandervelde was higher pick than Kelce so he gets roster nod. I do not see Mathis as any better. Dunlap also does not fit. Howard/Tupou might not either.
Short on RB so Hall gets 5th WR spot since he can return and play RB – versatility wins over talent. Could see RB make it over my 3rd TE.

Inactive: (Kafka active now), Lewis, Lee, Howard,, Vanderwelde, TeO-Neshim, Lindley, Marsh since those guys will not be key special teamers.

Fake IR Possible: Marsh, Lloyd, Kelce, Vandervelde, Rolle, Hughes
