Previewing Eagles defense

Previewing the Eagles defense

Star-divide

The eagles made some significant upgrades on the defensive side of the ball as we all know. But is this an elite defense or just a solid defense? Besides the player upgrades they have a rookie coordinator and added legendary defensive line coach Jim Washburn. The biggest signing was obviosuly Nnamdi asomugha and the trade for DRC which will drastically improve the cornerback play and the pass defense which allowed 31 passing TD's last year. On the line Jason Babin another Jim Washburn success story came back for 5 years as a free agent. Assuming he repeats last years performance which i think he will he will be the outside pass rushing complement they need to take attention away from Trent cole. Another big addition is Cullen Jenkins who will provide an inside pass rushing presence to go along with Mike Patterson if healthy and Antonio Dixon who looked like an excellent run stuffer last year. They also made a few more moves to add depth like veteran physical safety jarrod page who i really like and could start. They also added a couple more tackles for depth and could add a veteran MLB which i think would be the final piece to a dominant defense.

Secondary- The cornerback spot is now the biggest strenght on the defense and last year it was the biggest problem. But there is a chance Asante could be dealt with the additions of Nnamdi and DRC. If he stays they would have the best Cb trio in the league. DRC most likely will play in the slot unless they sometimes use Nnamdi in a Charles Woodson like role as a slot corner or blitzer. He could also be matched up against tight ends if hes in the slot. Nnamdi is the best cover corner in the league so i would prefer leaving him on the outside and putting DRC in the slot whihc i think he is suited to doing because his 6'2 192 frame. he also has excellent cover skills and playmaking ability to go along with Samuels playmaking ability and NNamdi's coverage skills make it nearly impossible to throw against them. But tight ends could still be a problem with out an upgrade and MLB. At safety Nate Allen had a solid rookie year until an injury. He also has good cover skills and solid playmaking ability. Jaquawan Jarrett is a rookie saftey with big hitting ability but questionale coverage skill despite good instincts and IQ. Kurt coleman is a solid run stoppign and hard hitting safety who could compete for a starting job along with veteran Jarrod Page. I hope he gets the job as logn as hes healthy because he can play well against run and pass. In 09 he has 4 forced fumbles, 4 ints and 80 tackles. So they have plenty of depth at both CB and safety. If one of 3 ss starters can be a solid starter this could be the best secondary in the league.

Linebackers- This unit is uncertain as of right now. The starters most likely will be Jamar Chaney, Moses Fokou and Casey Matthews as of right now. They are all very young. I think Fokou is a solid starter and good tackler but is not great in coverage. He could develop decent playmaking skill and Jamar Chaney has very good speed and great tackling abaility. I think he could be a very good starter for years to come  but the biggest question mark in the middle. Casey Matthews is a 4ht round pick and could be a good player down the road but now he is a question mark. He has excellent instincts and tackling ability but is small for a MLB and inexperienced. I hope they end up going after a veteran like Kirk Morrison or if healthy Lofa Tatupu unless they trade Asante for one. There have been rumors about Patrick Willis but i dont see that happening. If they have the money after signing Jackosn this could be a great move. Kirk Morrison is a veteran MLB who is versatile and could make this a very strong group. They also have good depth with Akeem Jordan and Keenan Clayton. As long as Matthews remains the starter this group is unpredictable and could be the only problem on  the team. With Morrison, Chaney and Fokou this could be a very good group. Morrison could also provide the answer to the tight end problems which is the only question about the pass defense and provide a physical run stopper with leadership.

Defensive Line- The additon of Cullen Jenkins in the middle provides a dominant pass rushing threat to go along with Trent Cole and newly acquired Jason Babin. Those three will cause havoc in opposing backfields for 60 minutes making the job for the secondary much easier. Babin and Jenkins will help cole stay fresh. Antonio Dixon is also a great run stuffer who could develop even more under Washburn. Cole and Babin have the potential for 30 sacks with Washburn and Jenkins providing an inside presence. The depth is also very good with Mike Patterson if healthy, Trevor laws, Anthony Hargrove and Derek Landri at tackle and Brandon graham when he returns, Darryl tapp and Juqua Parker. This is a deep and talented front which could dominate almsot any offense for 60 minutes week in and week out. They have 3 dominant every down lineman and very solid depth with a legendary coach.

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Yeah but Reddgie, Matthews was only a 4th round pick. I’m not sure if you knew that. Do you really want a guy starting at middle who was a 4th round pick? That’s 3 rounds after the first round, two rounds after the second round and some number of rounds after the third round – I forget how many – but it was some period of time after the third round. It was earlier than the sixth and the seventh, and somewhere near the 5th – all very relevant. I also hear a rumor that he might be a rookie, which means he has never played in the NFL before. Probably not in the NHL either, but Danny Watkins probably did while he was fighting fires and playing hockey for the Russian Army team. I hope this clear to you, Reddgie, sometimes you seem a little testy when you forget what round a guy is picked in.

Always helpful,
Iggy

Oh and Chaney looks like a stud.. He was a 7th..

Oh and Coleman was a big time contributer and probably a starter this season.. He was a 7th.

Trent Cole was a 5th.. So was Celek.

Herremans was a 4th, Jackson was undrafted,

Matthews is the best option for MLB.. you’ll see after this season that the round he was chosen in doesn’t mean shit. He’ll get his lumps early but come week 11 he’s gonna be a bonafide badass.

Freddie Mitchell > Desean Jackson.

Freddie was a first round pick man! That’s automatic talent. I mean I’m pretty sure Canton called him on draft day and was like “Yo Freddie start working on your induction speech”. Desean Jackson though. PSSSSHHHHH. Can you say bum? Middle of the second round. Ya dude probably won’t ever make it off the practice squad.

but not to nitpick.. but wasn’t everyone saying that Brian Rolle, whom we also drafted, was the best cover LB in the draft? if not for his 5’9" frame :(

thanks

I thought Rolle was more like Chaney, making tackles all over the field and being very disruptive. If he is a good cover LB, then I missed that scouting report.

Was Casey Matthews the best cover LB in the draft?

Of course I hope he will be the best, but the reports that I read were not so favorable:

Slightly stiff in the hips, doesn’t have great change of direction ability and could struggle in man coverage vs. NFL tight ends and backs. – CBS Sports
Better suited for zone coverage with his great awareness than man. Displays good awareness in coverage. Not a good matchup against speedy running backs and tight ends in man coverage. – NFL.com
Has above-average coverage skills for an inside linebacker, has relatively fluid hips and quick footwork, possesses enough speed to run down the middle of the field with opposing tight ends – Sideline Scouting
He doesn’t have the most fluid hips and can be exposed in pass coverage from time to time. He takes some false steps in pass coverage. – Mocking the Draft

I’m not suggesting that he’s terrible, but is that really the best that this class had to offer? For example, isn’t Brian Rolle better in coverage? Am I missing something?

by AnotherAndyR on Aug 5, 2011 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

Yes

The new scheme will call for alot of zone from the Mike. Running with the TE will primarily be the job of the Chaney.

by D3DT on Aug 6, 2011 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Ok, Matthews seems to be better in zone coverage than man, so the new scheme sounds like a good fit for him.

Brian Rolle

Im sure someone can find 4 quotes of people saying bad things about B. Rolle too.

The thing is, is that you CANT/WONT have stars/pro-bowlers at every position. You just cant. Some spots are going to be A LOT stronger than others, and some wil be pretty even.

I think with our LB’s either they make a trade(probably not), or they stick with what they have, and go with the best 3 they see in TC.

Eagles... :)

by Kevin M. on Aug 6, 2011 1:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Brian Rolle

FWIW, here are the corresponding assessments that I had found for Brian Rolle:

Flips his hips open in coverage to turn and trail. Drops quickly and can get back and cover deep zones. Keeps receivers in front of him and his eyes on the quarterback. Very aggressive in coverage, regularly knocking receivers off their routes. Runs well with tight ends and running backs in man coverage.

Has rare closing ability vs. the run and as a pass defender. Is a real asset in zone and man-to-man coverage.

Has good hands, and will make a lot of plays when dropping into deep zone coverage… Displays good instincts in coverage and breaks on the ball quickly when it is in the air…

Yes, Rolle has strengths and weaknesses too, but the assessments of his pass coverage generally seem more positive than for Matthews. I think Matthews is a better all-around player than Rolle (which is why Matthews was drafted earlier), and he is a better fit for the middle too.

He’ll be covering in zone more than man.. Also Rolle’s not better than Matthews in coverage or people would be saying “Rolle was the best Cover LB in the draft”

I totally agree with you..

but your not making a good case repeating that “people” are saying things about Casey without providing the source. Rolle seems to me like one of Andy’s favorite draft styles. In the later rounds they always pick a guy who is too small for one position and to big for another. I have learned to loathe tweeners. I was having a discussion with friend who is a bears fan the other day and was trying to convince him I wasn’t THAT worried about Matthews starting. I looked him up on and although not sure how reliable the source is one site I found had him ranked 4th out of the 129 ILBs in the draft. Actually the write up made me more confident about him. If this kid is my biggest concern going into the season I will be very happy. Fix RT, Sign Jackson. Casey Matthews I think we can afford to give him a shot. If he blows it.. slide Chaney over to MLB he played well there last year. Jordan can take his spot and be “serviceable”. With our CBs and DL young athletic LBs and Safeties are worth the chance.

Yes, I was basically just looking for the source

My initial request was in response to the comment that Matthews was “widely considered” to be the best cover linebacker in the draft. I’ve seen similar comments before in this site, but not elsewhere, so I’m wondering where the information came from. I’m just trying to get a better sense of his strengths and weaknesses, and I generally agree with the responses to my comment.

from an outsider and Cowboy fan,

On paper , this defense looks damn good. We’ll know more when the season starts but I can see them being like the Eagles of the 90’s. Or more recently like the Ravens in 2000. I know that defense was one of the best in history. Yet if this defense performs to par , then they can get close to that level. Only weaknesses I see may be the linebackers and possibly safety, but its not as bad as one might think.

if matthews can be a solid MLb then i agree with that. Nate allen, Jarrod page, coleman and jarrett give them very solid safties which i lke more then others do. i want page to start. they also dont need matthews to be a star. he just has to be solid and chaney is also a very good player who could be a stud.
