Ricky Sapp, Victor Abiamiri Both Quit The Eagles

With Jim Washburn as the new sheriff in town on the defensive line, we knew this year at Eagles camp wasn't going to be for the feint of heart. Apparently, two Eagles had just had enough. According to several reports, defensive ends Ricky Sapp and Victor Abiamiri have left the team.

Abiamiri was actually injured once again and was seen walking around on crutches and in a boot. The team refused to talk about the injury, but after working all summer to rehab from his previous injuries it had to be very frustrating to get hurt again. He was probably not long for the roster anyway, but it is sad to see a young guy's career turn out that way. [Note by JasonB, 08/04/11 2:02 PM EDT ] Geoff Mosher reports that Abiamiri tore his Achilles.

As for Ricky Sapp, the Eagles fifth round pick form last year, he just up and left. Apparently he did the same thing last year and has now been placed on the Reserved/Left Squad list. Geoff Mosher talked to a teammate who said that Sapp had been complaining of knee pain and was frustrated. Oh well.

The Eagles have no shortage of defensive ends and neither Sapp nor Abiamiri figured for a big role, if any this year. However, there is some real concern at defensive tackle. With Mike Patterson's situation and the trade of Brodrick Bunkley, the situation there is kind of thin right now. Antonio Dixon, Cullen Jenkins and Trevor Laws seem to be the only locks to make the team at DT. If Mike Patterson can go, then they're four deep and probably in good shape... but without knowing that, it's a situation to watch.

Kinda disappointed in Sapp

He seemed like one of those odd ball DE/LB guys who could be very disruptive. Not having torn up my knee like him I can’t relate to the pain, but it seems like a bit of a baby move to just leave.

They couldn’t get Abiamiri out of here fast enough. Waste of a camp body since he’s hurt every year

by Wet_Skeletonz on Aug 4, 2011 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

I agree.

I thought Sapp had a chance in this kind of system. I have torn my knee up similar to him and while I can understand the pain, I can’t imagine quitting and possibly defining my career like that. I’m now 34 and my knee clicks so bad you that my family can hear it over the tv when I’m coming downstairs, but if an NBA team called, I would be on the first thing smokin’.

As for Abiamiri, this is a good thing for the team. For some reason, we just couldn’t cut him. Now it seems as if he did it for us. Thanks Vic…you cutting yourself is the first and only contribution you made to this team.

a nicer spin for the title?

I hate to be nitpicky, but it would be nice if the title acknowledged their injuries, rather than stating that the players quit the team. The headline is scrolled across many SB nation websites, and it may lead some readers to conclude that those players are quitters. Instead, the players may have simply realized that their ongoing injuries would be impossible to overcome. As the text noted, both players seem frustrated, so let’s not add insult to injury.

Sorry, it's not that easy to get the confirmed inside-scoop before everyone else

I know you wanted proof of everything Schefter has broken this off-season. But I’m not going to go through 10 pages of twitter posts and show you all the signings he broke BEFORE anyone else knew about it.

But here’s an example of why Schefter is awesome at breaking news. Not everyone can do it.

Albert Breer
AlbertBreer It does seem like there’s been progress in the last hour between the NFL and NFLPA. They’re getting there. Deadlines work, folks. 3 minutes ago

If reports are true. To put is simply: What a bunch of knobheads!

To put it less simply:

They are two young players on a roster with Superbowl aspirations being taught by one of the best D-Line Coaches of all time. They are walking away from a opportunity of a lifetime. No team will ever sign them after they quit “the dream team” as soon as the heat came on!

by Brawnybalboa on Aug 4, 2011 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

That's weak sauce Jason

Big difference between quitting and being injured per team. VA has never been a quitter. The above disrespect towards a fellow ND Alumni is uncalled for. If you don’t get it I can’t help.

I’m a fan, although I’ve never seen the guy, just read about him.

I guess my biggest boner about him is hoping he can duplicate the success he had in the CFL here.

In good defensive line news, today was their day for autographs, and in 7 years of going to camp, this was the 1st time I ever won an autograph session there. It was pretty cool to have Cole sign my jersey of him, and then Jenkins (jokingly) said he wasn’t gonna sign my Trent jersey. Then Babin, who was in the other line if anybody here know how the autographs at Lehigh work, told Jenkins to man up and scribble his name. It was pretty funny and they all seemed like cool guy. Laws was supposed to be in my line, but he didn’t even come out and practice. Then Hunt was pretty cool too. Especially a guy that a lot of guys are rooting for.

Yeah, I even got the good line too haha. It was funny, because I was so close to wearing my Jackson jersey today too, and at the last minute I was like “fuck it, everyone has his jersey and the dudes not even in camp, I’ll wear Cole”.

by JpH89 on Aug 4, 2011 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m kinda glad that with the roster we’ve been building this offseason, that camp and practices are gonna be run tough enough with the reputation that it makes lesser players “quit.”

I was worried that they would put in less effort and coast “you know, the other superstar can handle this.” Focus on the prize. We’re not the favorites. The Packers, Saints, Falcons… will all have something to say about it before we get to whoever the AFC Champion is in the Super Bowl.

Ugh… bring on the Rams already, this preseason shit is killing me and it hasn’t even started yet!

New CBA finally
AdamSchefter Players voting now on CBA.

Looks like Player’s won with no new HGH testing and Goodell keeps his authority on discipline. So basically, NFL decided it wants to ban people from the field for off-field issues, but if it’s steroid related, we really don’t care that much.

by cin7 on Aug 4, 2011 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think they’ve ever done blood testing for HGH

The Jruth shall be told.

by packimop on Aug 4, 2011 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s my understanding of it. Whatever testing method they used previously is still IN. But the new MUCH BETTER blood/HGH testing will not be brought into the league. I guess player’s argued false positives on it? Not sure really.

by cin7 on Aug 4, 2011 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow, I was wrong about the HGH testing
AdamSchefter One source familiar with talks said CBA calls for HGH testing. It must be implemented by the first game – first time ever for HGH testing.

Looks like the Player’s had no leverage left to win anything, LOL.

by cin7 on Aug 4, 2011 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

good. It’s about time. I still think that injured players should be allowed to use HGH in order to recover, but once you hit the field you shouldn’t be usin that shit at all

We lost 2 injured players – how does that screw us over?

Abiamiri specifically has been with us multiple seasons, been injured, gone through surgeries, rehabbed all off-season. Not sure your reaction is even remotely called for.

As for Sapp… he should probably get a post all for himself. Looks like he has issues and injuries to go with them.

by cin7 on Aug 4, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I mean still why quit, ur a fucking professional athlete. And we could of maybe traded both of them for 7th round picks. Some value. And they did screw us over, I personally thought Sapp would be a good special teamer

by eaglesfan20 on Aug 4, 2011 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh wow.. What fucking pussies.. If Abimari was hurt then ok, we were gonna cut him anyway,

Sapp couldn’t handle a coach who’d get on him, if he doesn’t want to work with THE BEST DL COACH in the NFL then fuck his ass, hold onto his contract so he can never sign with another team.

If he wants to quit, let his ass fucking rot.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Wild_Eagle!

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.
