Steve Smith Planning To Play Week One
Steve Smith was taken off the PUP list and practiced with the Eagles for the first time today. The news certainly came to a surprise to Giants fans, who were under the impression that it would be some time before Smith could play, but it's certainly a surprise to us as well. Smith also met the media and updated how he was feeling. He says he's shooting to play week one and knew he was close to practicing.
"I was pretty ahead of schedule. Just from working with the coaches and the training staff, they're really good with rehabbing so it's good." Smith continued, "I think I'll be able to [play week one], it's up to what the coaches and trainers want me to do. I'm feeling good, and as long as we have no setbacks, that's what I'm shooting for."
Smith also said that it will take a few weeks before he's back in top physical form, but he's not experiencing any ill effects right now.
"It'll take me a few weeks, but I feel really good right now. I don't feel like I'm laboring or I can't cut. I'm doing good so far"
He's been doing extra work with Mike Kafka to get up to speed on the offense.
"Yeah. I stayed after with [QB Mike] Kafka and ran some routes and some plays. It was good to get out there with Vick and catch some balls from him."
Andy Reid wouldn't give a timeline on Smith or Jeremy Maclin playing in a game. He only said they would take it "day by day" and give each guy more work and more work as they proved they could handle it.

Just as long as he's not rushing himself back in
And causing a re-injury risk (see Jamaal Jackson week 1 last year)

always a concern, but I figure after being looked at by two different medical staffs
I doubt there is too much risk involved with that.

Talk to your boys BBI
You guys are really convincing yourselves to love Domenik Hixon?
I almost never go to another team’s blog, but since it was linked here, I think you nailed it;
If he is, though, there isn’t much doubt that would make the Giants look bad here.
SS might not contribute or he might … but why are NYG fans having a hard time accepting that the team botched this? Teams botch things all the time, it’s okay to admit it.

It's one of the more frustrating parts of seeing the effects of this offseason
Some Giants fans have deluded themselves time and time again with regards to the Eagles moves and their non-moves. I still think they’re going to field a good team, but for a portion of the fanbase to keep spinning obviously bad occurrences into some sort of blessing has gotten ridiculous.
nobody's saying its a blessing. And obviously a healthy steve smith is huge weapon
But Domenik Hixon ain’t terrible as a #3, and we don’t know how a post surgery SS will do.
I for one, will be the first to admit if the team botched something up. I just don’t know the details, so I’m not going to make a judgement on who fked up.

It's pretty safe to say from Giants fans reactions
that you wanted him back, $2 mil or no, especially if he really plays Week 1 and contributes at all the first two months.
I saw the numbers where you guys looked at Hixon, and you know, Victor Cruz seems like a fun guy to have on the squad as well. So it’s not like it’s a guarantee the non-move will backfire.
It just seemed comical to hear people be like “pssht, Steve Who? We got Hixon!”
Whatever you need to do to cope. I get it. We got plenty of issues to worry about over here pre-Week 3.

of course we wanted him back.

Jamaal injured a different part of his body than what was injured though…
Last name Ever
First name Greatest
So JJ injured his triceps because he rushed back from a knee injury? You most be some freak if your triceps is placed anywhere near your knees.
by Anders Jensen on Aug 27, 2011 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Jamaal Jackson rushing back?
I fucking hate when people say this. He hurt a totally different part of his body. Its like when your headlights dont work on your car. So you take your car to a mechanic. The mechanic does a good job and fixes your headlights. But yet you return to the mechanic a few days later to chew his ass. Because your engine blew up. One has NOTHING to do with the other.
Disagree - overall conditioning issue
He wasn’t practicing and playing for a while because of his knee injury. So even if his knee was OK, he still wasn’t in overall playing shape. If he’d been given a bit more time, he could have gotten there. After all you don’t play football with just one part of your body.
It’s like this. I hurt my foot and didn’t swim for a long while. Then when I tried to, I got dizzy after a few laps. That didn’t mean my foot wasn’t ready, it meant I was out of shape because I hadn’t exercised in order to let my foot recover.

Even if he’s not ready for week 1, if we could have him for week 2 that would be fantastic.

When everyone is healthy, Im interested too see just how they spread the ball around. If this Oline can be at the least average than we are gonna have alot of match-ups in our favor… And we thought last year was a video game year.
If the o-line can just give Vick more then half a second, we should be fine on offense.

Jackson, Maclin, Smith, Avant, Cooper…. sounds pretty damn good to me
NFL, I am no longer disappoint.
To add to that, as far as offensive skill players go
I really don’t think there is a team in this league that has the quality of skill players top to bottom that the Eagles do… DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Steve Smith, Jason Avant, Brent Celek, LeSean McCoy, Ronnie Brown, Vince Young, and Michael Vick. I mean, that is basically a probowl team right there. I know we’ve been talking about this, especially with the stupid ass ‘dream team’ moniker, but when you really sit back and look at those players you have to appreciate what we have going right now. Looking at only those players it is just unreal how much potential this offense has. If the o-line can get it together and even just play average, this this without a doubt the best offense in the NFL.
NFL, I am no longer disappoint.
did you really include the backup QB?
not to mention Jason Avant
Only reason Cooper is still on there
is that he’s the only really tall guy.
If Maclin or Avant was 6’3" or more, Riley would be out the door and a different receiver would be our #5.

I think you are slighting Cooper
He was Tebow’s favorite target at Florida, has shown flashes of being a contributor on offense and if it weren’t for the WRs in front of him, he would be playing more often.
Dude...
Have you seen Cooper play? He’s one of the few college players I was literally praying we’d get, imagine my Micah Johnson fetish x 10…
Coopers 6’2, 222lbs, has like a 38in vertical (means his head gets about 9ft 4in off the ground, so he could probably and realistically catch the ball 10 1/2 ft off the ground.
he adjusts well to bad passes (he caught from Tim Tebow for a while).. But for real he adjusts well to passes, look at what he did to Ed Reed.
Cooper could push for some serious time once Avant slows down.

College was the previous level
NFL is the current level, and college for him was 2 years ago. What matters is not what he did back then, but what he’s done here.
Everyone was saying “great red zone target, tall guy, Tebow’s favorite receiver…” but what of that actually showed up on the field of play, in Eagles games? Reid isn’t going over his old U of Florida film, he’s judging him by what he sees in training camp, practices, and games.
It would be great if he can bring more to the table, all I’m saying is I haven’t seen it so far.

It’s staggering how many of them believe they have one of the best receiving groups in the league even after losing Smith.

There’s one guy over there claiming we’re “all in” because “half” of our team is leaving next year. And this is a reaction to our “poor” drafts that have only netted us 4 “decent” starters. Clueless…

to hell with them
let them think that nicks, manningham, hixon, cruz, and whoever is the answer…
I’m still gonna say Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Jones is the best Core of WRs, but we should be top 3 in the league….easily

There's a bunch of peeps that don't know all the details or make assumptions over there.
Just the same way that a bunch of people here think we’re screwed because we don’t have Steve Smith anymore.
I don’t think its much of a stretch to say that we have one of the best WR duos in Manningham and Nicks.
Nicks: 79 rec, 1052 yds, 11 TDs
Manningham: 60 rec, 944 yds, 9 TDs
Only Dallas had 2 1000 yd receivers last season (Austin and Witten). This combo comes real close.
As far as Hixon goes, it remains to be seen how he does, but he’s been impressive in preseason and was our #1 WR for some time in 2008 after Plaxico shot himself. So I don’t think its out of the question that we have a top WR corps in the league….note: not THE top, but A top.

I like the guy who replied to my comment with the “astute” observation that DeSean is leaving, Maclin and Celek are the 2 best draft picks we’ve made, and Trent Cole would be a backup on every team except Cincy. I understand not liking other teams but let’s be realistic.

Yea there’s one guy (probably the same dude you’re talking about) that’s fucking delusional. I’m using all restraint possible from laughing in his face and calling him a douchefuck.
The Jruth shall be told.
I think he said the Eagles “aren’t going to make the playoffs.” Are you fucking serious? They had 10 wins last year after week 15 and have vastly improved every position besides LB and possibly O-line.
The Jruth shall be told.
It’s dazzling to read isn’t it? And he’s actually serious. Wow…

Watching the Bolts vs Cards
Have to say that Kolb look pretty good in Cards offense.
so did Fitzpatrick and Chad Henne
they can all go to the preseason pro bowl for all i care…wait till the plays, game film and blitzing comes out. See how Kolb does then with a stellar offensive line he has (sarcasm).
