Check the Stats Revis

Finally have some time to write a fan-posts after a week of college classes! Architecture absorbs too much of my Eagle time...

As most here know, Vonte Davis of the Miami Dolphins stated that he believed that himself and Sean Smith made the best Corner tandem in the NFL. And as most here at BGN chuckled, Darrelle Revis of the New York Jets had a much different opinion.

Darrelle has some words for Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis: Check the tape. That's tape, as in game tape.

The message was delivered one day after Davis boasted that he and fellow starter Sean Smith -- not the New York Jets' tandem of Revis and Antonio Cromartie -- were the best cornerback duo in the NFL.

"It really don't matter because the film don't lie," Revis said. "The film don't lie. You can say what you want to say. You can say the sky is red, but it ain't red. That's just what it is. We know how we play and we know what we do on that field not just as a corner tandem but as a secondary. We play great football."

While we are watching the tape, mine as well look at the stat-line as well Revis....More after the jump

Star-divide

Darrelle Revis may be one of the best in the game if not the best, but slow down bro. To have the best tandem, you need more than one amazing cornerback. Let's see what the Jet's got. First, lets look at Success rate against the Jets corners...

Success Rate, to remind everyone, is the percentage of passes that don't manage to get at least 45 percent of needed yards on first down, 60 percent of needed yards on second down, or 100 percent of needed yards on third down.

Via http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2011/best-cornerback-charting-stats-2010

Revis looks amazing, however notice that the Eagles current slot corner, Joselio Hanson is also ranked high, higher than our friend Antonio Cromartie, the other Jets corner. But wait Revis, your not off the hook, you would have been beaten if quarterbacks targeted Asante Samuel four more times.

One more tidbit for today. Here are the stats for two top cornerbacks who did not have enough targets to be ranked above:

Player

Charted
Targets
Yd/Pass Success
Rate
Avg. Pass
Distance
YAC
Nnamdi Asomugha 31 5.9 61% 15.4 3.7
Asante Samuel 36 3.2 78% 15.0 1.9

With four more pass targets, Samuel would rank as the top cornerback in both Success Rate and yards per pass. (He will inFootball Outsiders Almanac 2011, since our ratings in the book generally waive the minimum for cornerbacks who had at least eight starts.)

Also newly acquired Nnamdi Asomugha hasn't been targeted over 40 times since mid 2000's, and is the one that questions Revis' status as the best corner, so let's not debate that...So let's look at Cromartie

Antonio Cromartie's 2010 Stats

Targets: 102

Success Rate: 63%

Completions Allowed: 42

TD's allowed: 7

INT's: 3 INT's

vs Asante Samuel's

Targets: 36

Success Rate: 78%

Completions allowed:19

TD's allowed: 2

INT': 7 INT's

But wait, the Eagles have Cromartie, Dominique Rodgers Cromartie that is...

Dominique Rodgers Cromartie:

Screenshot2011-08-26at41632pm_medium

Antonio Cromartie:

Screenshot2011-08-26at41642pm_medium

The stat line is super similar, so it's a tie. Therefore, the Eagles have a Revis (Nnamdi), A. Cromartie (DRC), and as well as Asante Samuel. I still think 3>2 Revis....

Re: Vonte Davis

You and Smith make up the best corner tandem under 30, however we have Vince Young so....

Joe Banner is Evil Banners father. Kinda like Luke and Darth Vader.

Juan Castillo switching from the offensive line coach to Defensive coordinator is soooo dumb it might just work.

You have your charts mixed up and it fucking bothers me

Not to mention the reason ‘Jose’ had such a good year is because Ellis Hobbs and Dmitri Patterson sucked so much dick that QBs rarely threw towards him. He had 46 targets in a whole year.

In their prime?

I’d say based off last year I’d go with Asante, in his prime… I’d probably go with Asante.

Simple reason is that he’s got that pick factor and if I were starting my team I’d wait to target a guy like Sheldon Brown back when he was good who’s not spectacular, not great, but doesn’t fuck up..

You combine that and you’re very well off. Get a solid safety that can help over the top if Asante wiff’s (which I fully know he has done and will do) and you minimize the damage of a mistake by Asante.

yeah but in his prime

Revis doesn’t wiff. so right there you’re doing a disservice to your D, cause you constantly have to keep your eye on Asante’s side – in case he has a ‘bit it’ moment.

Int’s are fun, and great for Sportscenter highlights, but give me the guy who doesn’t get the big picks but who makes opposing QB’s not look the way of their star receiver for 60 minutes.

plus Revis is a supreme tackler, Asante can be had with a juke or two. w_e, think you’re off on this one fam, and i’m pretty confident most of the world would agree with me on this.

Yes, however you need to keep in mind that Revis also doesn’t make picks… And I’d take 7 picks out of 35 targets and 1 TD given up over not wiffing.

Int’s are fun, and great for Sportscenter highlights, but give me the guy who doesn’t get the big picks but who makes opposing QB’s not look the way of their star receiver for 60 minutes.

You do realize that Asante was thrown at 36 times last season? only like 12 completions on him for less than 150yards… And he had 7 picks..

plus Revis is a supreme tackler, Asante can be had with a juke or two. w_e, think you’re off on this one fam, and i’m pretty confident most of the world would agree with me on this.

Revis really isn’t a supreme tackler, he had as many as Asante did.. Asante’s not had with a juke or two, he just doesn’t wrap up and lays into people…

Most of the world don’t know that stats. Asante’s as shut down as Revis just for other reasons.

i don't see it

Revis does make INTs, but not at the clip of Asante in his prime. you’re right about that. Asante’s career high was 10 in 2006. But Revis does grab his fair share too. 5, and 6 in back to back seasons, before his reputation for being shut down was forged. now, he may get the Nnamdi, Deion treatment, and his picks may go down(btw, your argument for Asante kind of disses Nnamdi, as he gets next to no picks for his career). but again to me, INTs are overrated like dunks are. TO’s are important, but if it comes from gambling and sometimes losing, i’d say that diminishes there value.

After that, there is no competition as far as the 2 are concerned. you say Asante tackles – his high was 64 combined. Revis’ was 87. Asante’s high in PD – 22. Revis – 31(led the league).

Asante at the very top of his game is a helluva ballhawk. No denying that. Revis at his best, is a DPOY candidate. that tells me there’s no competition b/t the two.

btw, the nickname? was given for a reason:

Don’t think Asante can boast those stats, on his best day.

Maybe not with the Eagles.

But as a Oakland Raider, he shut down an opponents best receiver. And besides, he’d shut down a side two. If a teams best receiver and their slot were on the left side and Nnamdi was on that side, teams would throw to the right side.

him being on the west coast, and on a team not too ready for prime time, i didn’t get to see him much. i will be keeping a close eye on no. 21 this season. he’s going to see 2 sets of very good receivers, 4 times a year. this will be a true test for him. but i still maintain that season that Revis had, is untouched by any other corner i’ve ever seen.

what have you done for me lately

is the mentality you have to have and Asante has the most INTs the last what 3 years 4 years? and has completely shut down his side of the field. Yes Mikell covered overtop for him and allowed him that freedom but Asante shut down that side of the field and grabbed INTs he was better the past couple of years and will be better this year as well

i'll take Revis' '09 season

over any of Asante’s seasons. or all of them. what Revis did that year, i don’t think has been done by anyone, even deion in his prime. and i’m a big deion guy. but if you had the pleasure of watching every game that season, there’d be no way you’d say Samuel over Revis. ever.

Yeah I don't care if we have Nos. 1 and 3

or 2 and 3

Revis and Cromartie isn’t even close to Nnamdi and Asante, never mind DRC, so neither the Dolphins nor the Jets should be running their yaps abut being the best corner tandem unless they mean in the AFC East. Packers might have better corners than the Jets overall too.

But like your boy said, the film don’t lie. And if our trio remains healthy, it won’t. All year.

I know there’s alot of argument about whether revis or nnamdi is better, but I don’t think anyone can say one is significantly better than the other. So as you said, since they’re about equal, we each have a nnamdi/revis, but Asante and DRC paired with him is insanely better than just antonio cromartie. It’s not even close.

when in the slot, Hanson is adequate to adequate-plus. He is currently our fourth best corner in terms of the total package, but when allowed to do what he’s good at, he’s apparently a good specialist, and passes the eye test in the nickel too.

I wouldn’t trade for him and play him outside and have high hopes. But if another team needs a nickel guy …

After I saw this

One thing we haven’t yet done this year is look at the full game charting numbers for cornerbacks in 2010. These tables rank all cornerbacks with at least 40 charted passes.

I wondered about these stats. Also, the metrics for the eagles tandem will be skewed this year because they will be on the field together and someone’s going to get the passes thrown at them. But we’ll see.

Its a shame these forums have too many "cheerleaders" and people who get most of their LOL "football knowledge" from the talking heads in the media, and not from individual study. How I wish there were more people with actual football acumen that can forward the conversation and advance the sport...

I'm hoping it's Asante so he can pick off a shit ton of passes.

Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Wild_Eagle!

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

I'm aleady predicting he and DRC combine for 20 picks (Asante-13 DRC-7)

They could just throw passes at players covered by LBs and Ss

Their targets should go up, and I hope Nnamdi’s picks do personally, but there’s no guarantee they’ll go through the roof. If WRs are covered and there’s a gaping hole in the middle of the defense, then maybe that’s the way teams go.

I'm not a fan of Cro, but he was targeted almost 70 more times than Samuel

Someone allowing 2 touchdowns and 19 completions off 36 targets isn’t all that great, really. It could be argued that if he had been thrown at more their “success percentage” (gotta love football outsiders) would probably be very similar.

or. . .

you could argue that if they had been thrown at the same, then Samuel would have had 21 INTs. It goes both way bud.

My apologies. He would have had 19.8, which would round up to 20.

Yea teams stay away from Asante’s side of the field because they know he’s a gambler and will take a pick to the house. This year they’ll have to throw towards either Nnamdi or AS, and I think they’re both going to have big years. If our LB’s can cover TE’s then we’ll be set.

The Jruth shall be told.

You could also argue that

Asante wasn’t thrown at more because WRs weren’t open.

Either way, we’ll have a lot of fun this year …
