Poll: Move Todd Herremans to RT?

I just finished reading through Reuben Frank's 25 random points about the Eagles.  It's a good read, but I'd like to focus on his second point:

2) Somebody is going to have to convince me that the Eagles’ best offensive line isn’t (left to right): Jason Peters  Evan Mathis -> Jamaal Jackson -> Danny Watkins -> Todd Herremans.

The Peters-Herremans duo on that left side is an absolute force, but at the same time, I'm terrified of the Eagles' current uncertainty at RT.  Ryan Harris is hurt (which is no different than his history in Denver).  Winston Justice is on the PUP list, and we all remember his struggles down the stretch last season.  King Dunlap, while better than we all thought, is still King Dunlap.  Evan Mathis can play some RT, but I'm not exactly thrilled about the prospect of a guy that has been an Eagle for less than a month (and is better suited to play guard) protecting Michael Vick's blindside next to a rookie.  And then, the Eagles go out and sign Reggie Wells?  Huh?  What's going on here?

Ignoring the side debate of "Jackson vs Kelce," is Frank right about moving Herremans to the right side?  Would you sacrifice the Eagles' elite left side of the line for some more peace of mind at right tackle?

Mathis is a really good player, but I like Herremans much more as a guard and I’ve had faith in Dunlap for awhile now.

That left side can be dominant

And I would hate to see that broken up, but it’s the best option. Unless they come up with better option, herreman’s to RT makes the most sense. I’ll sacrifice a dominant left side, for an overall stable line.

I think we need to see Dunlap

Lineup again at RT before we can make this vote….

Herremans is good but who knwos how well he would do or how long it would take him to get the RT position down….. Im not convinced…..yet…..

Keep in mind that most great DE still lineup on the left….

perhaps to fix what was the achilles heel of the O last season.

to keep unblocked blitzers from clobbering Vick from his blind side over and over again like in the Vikings, 2nd Giants and Packers games?

Unblocked blitzers...

..are a function of the offensive lineman that makes the protection calls. Last year, unblocked blitzers falls on none other than Mike McGlynn…however, you expect that with a rookie low round pick starting.

This year, as I’ve read it, Vick makes the protection calls for the OLine which can then be corrected for the final time by Jamaal Jackson, who I firmly expect to be the starter Week 1. Don’t get caught up in the Kelce hype…they really want to see how far along he is for a few reasons, but none of them are for him to be the starting center Week 1. They want to see if he is as good against starters as he is against backups so they know whether or not to keep McGlynn who right now is the third center (which doesn’t exist) and is falling far at guard. In other words, I don’t expect him to make the team. Kelce is our long term answer…maybe even as soon as next season. But expect him only to start if Jackson gets hurt.

I said all that to say that if you think unblocked blitzers were the achilles heel, the problem is already fixed and it had nothing to do with the right tackle.

It may be that someone gets cut and can come in a do a decent job. I know that may be some wishful thinking, since not too many teams are cutting loose starting level tackles in a passing offense. But who knows?

God how the mighty have fallen. A few weeks ago, people were falling all over Harris as the savior and how he made our line a major strength. Now he’s going to see a back specialist and he may not even make the team.

by DLawrence55 on Aug 24, 2011 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

the pros and cons of a dominant left side

it makes sense, of course, to want one side of the line to be dominant, but Vick’s mobility should allow the Eagles to focus on creating the best overall offensive line, regardless of which side is strongest. if you remember last year towards the end of the season, the bears and giants effectively (except the 4th quarter for the giants) blitzed the left side and forced vick to scramble to his right, making any throws across his body rather difficult. on one hand, an elite left side would pick up those blitzes better and let vick stay in the pocket longer…but on the other hand, a rookie and/or unproven veteran on the right side (blindside) could be a recipe for disaster. overall, moving herremans across to the right may end up creating the most consistent o-line alignment, but i suspect they’ll see how the right side does in the regular season, as it is now, before shaking anything up, with the hopes that the left side can remain elite and the right side becomes reliable and/or a pleasant surprise. if vick is taking a lot of hits from his right, expect to see some changes.

by Nathan Mandel on Aug 24, 2011 12:45 PM EDT reply actions

defenses can blitz the left so the fullback protection slides that way, and then just allow the man-on-man against our weak right side to win. By the time Vick wants to move, both sides are collapsed.

Crazy Idea...

LT: Herremans
LG: Wells/ McGylnn
C: Jackson/Kelce
RG: Watkins
RT: Peters

Of course, that could never be done now, but in Madden it would be pretty decent lol

Our best line is going to depend on if Harris can be healthy for a full 16 weeks, and play at RT..

Love him or hate him, McNabb consistently stepped out of the way of people coming right for him from his blind side when there was no way he could have seen them. In that respect, McNabb was uncanny. He was incredibly hard to sack.

Depends on how long it is going to take for Justice and/or Harris to get healthy

If Justice and Harris were both looking at being out long term, then moving Herremans to RT and Mathis to LG would be ideal, had we made the decision day 1. We didn’t.

Part of the reason that the right side of the OL looked so bad last year was that there was someone different playing RG almost every week, preventing Justice from developing a rapport with the same guy.

These guys need to have a comfort level with who they are playing next to. Justice (could start practicing next week, meaning a return early in the season) and/or Harris (back spasms could go away quickly or could linger all year, so he is a question mark right now) could conceivably be back in a few weeks and then they slide into RT. In the meantime, Dunlap should be sufficient.

Well shit,

If you are gonna do it, better try it in pre-season than during a real game – and you have to be sure that what you have now simply will not work. This is not a minor undertaking – Not only would Todzilla have to get his job down, the guys who you switch around him have to get their jobs down, too. That’s a lot of change for the line to digest in a small amount of TIME.

Yes, I suppose it would be do-able, but it would definitely be an non-trivial event.

I’d only move him if there was absolutely nothing at RT. While there is still a chance of King being adequate and one of the other two being healthy I’d rather keep the chemistry and talent intact on the left side. Those two trust and know what each other are going to do for the most part by this point. How can you say that without fail moving Todd to RT won’t just create a huge gaping hole at LG that ill put players right in Vick’s face?

Questions to ask

How effective has Herremans been at playing tackle any time in the last 2-3 years? And even if he was, was it at RT?
I think there isn’t enough time for him to effectively learn a new position in time for the season. If this was the start of training camp, maybe.
I would rather try Mathis at RT, rather than either break up the Peters – Herremans combo or put King Dunlap in there.
