Before we go to the trouble of hiding all the sharp objects let’s remember a few things. Tonight’s game was a big success. We had NO major injuries. That is goal #1, #2, and #3 in every preseason game. The other thing to keep in mind is that this is the preseason. You don’t hold the team to the same level of expectations that you do in real games.

Amazing Play
The Dion Lewis run up the left sidelines, I can’t wait to see him get more touches during the season. He might be something special.

He reminded me of Westie on that screen. He’s a shifty little bastard that I would definitely like to see get more touches.

Westbrook embarrassed many, many defenders and left them grasping at air.

Ummmm
No. The second move that Lewis made that left the guy frozen was crazier then any move westbrook ever made.

I have no idea what kind of drugs you are smoking. Westbrook was one of the shiftiest guys in the NFL. He mad emore people tackle air than any other REagle i have personally witnessed. The only other one close has got to be Vick, and even then, its a totally different kind of elusiveness. Westy was SCARY. Vick gets out the of the way, but Westbrook just shifted and made people look dumb.
And no, i am not going to put DJax into this conversation. He has freakish speed, and make people miss because of his quick first step. As for actual shiftiness, i dont think he has as much of that. He just has a burst that is unmatched, and it allows him to get past people before they realize it….
I like Dion a lot, but if he did ANYTHING better than Westbrook, then he wouldnt be the 3rd string running back on a pass happy team….

the matthews situation scares me...
i know we all want to close our eyes and make believe he’s clay, but we can’t do that anymore. i would really like to see the eagles bring in someone… either a trade (see hanson) or a roster cut victim.

this
is funny, but rings true… But I don’t think they need to bring in someone else. They have the right LB’s on the team to do the job. They have to just admit that their original thinking was flawed.

ehhh its only his second start
he was a 4th round pick that is just being granted a starting job…….. he is playing a position where there is a great deal of responsibility he isn’t going to just be a natural but i think he will be okay……. even if he does not turn out to be what the eagles expected him to be the rest of the defense should make up for his mediocre play

Let’s be real, Big Stew had one good season here, and might be a great linebacker some day, but we’d be taking a big risk paying what he wanted hoping he’d stay healthy.
At least they got their worst game of the season out of the way early. Better now than in division play. However Nate Allen, Vick, our run D… oh boy…

Even though we lost terribly, I truly believe we needed it. We have great players on this team, but it all has to come together. There are some corrections that need to be made and with a loss like this, it should be recognized. I believe this loss will help us in the long run. Go Eagles!!!!

Positives
1) defense now has been tested by a great running offense and now has tape they can use to improve
2) Hit the bathroom before the long haul so ou don’t make a pit stop and lose time (get the stinker out of the way)
3) Kafka looked good
4) Maybe everyone will shut up and the ‘dream team’ bs
5) Learn from mistakes early rather than late in the season and improve so it doesn’t happen again
6) It’s the preseason

Babin, Hargrove, and Jenkins show good pursuit to QB.
Kafka shows that he can still outperform the 3rd stringers.
however,
Run defense did not show up 2 games now. WTF.
I would have liked to see more LB blitzes for Matthews and company.
Really needed better play from Hanson, Jarret, and Samuel.
Dream ROSTER, maybe, but far from calling this a dream TEAM.
And to all of you that say, its only preseason, and the starters werent ALL in yesterday, whatever. The win doesnt matter, looking at individual performances, which is what preseason is all about, there was a lack of it! From Vick to Hanson. Poor throws from Vick and Young, poor decisions. This will be a learning experience, but we CANNOT JUST SHRUG IT OFF AS IF IT DIDNT HAPPEN OR IT DIDNT MATTER!

Dream Team???
I think that every team we play this season will get up for the Eagles, just like the Steelers did last night, because of this “dream team” tag.
I recorded the first half of the game so I might go back through and do a little analysis.
I actually didn’t feel too bad about Vick’s performance. His natural instinct is to run, and he was clearly trying to sit back or scramble around within the pocket looking for someone to throw to. I think his timing was off with his receivers…throw Jackson in that mix who’s been here for a week and that exacerbates timing issues, regardless of his talent and tenure with the team.
I’m also not that worried about the run defense. It goes without saying that missing Patterson and Dixon really hurts our ability to stuff the run. You can’t field a d-line with nothing but pass rushers.
I don’t see how it could hurt to bring in a veteran LB, even a reserve type. We don’t need the guy to be good in coverage…just make tackles and help stop whatever escapes our d-line. I’m not going to bash Casey for being a rookie. While he was certainly all over the place, he did make a few solid tackles and finished off plays.
I haven't died. Right now I'm drinking a beer and eating fried chicken. What were you expecting, a funeral?- Yao Ming
The whole 'Casey is a rookie' is not a valid argument - either way
The only question is: can he man the MIKE for a legitimate contender and not be exposed as a weakness?
Last night, he didn’t prove that he could. That doesn’t mean he can’t prove it in the future – but it would behoove this team to put themselves in the best position to win games. And they know that.
That’s why I said it couldn’t hurt to bring in a veteran. It’s on Andy and Co. if they leave us exposed, which frankly I feel they might do. I’m just responding to the “CASEY SUCKS” people.
I haven't died. Right now I'm drinking a beer and eating fried chicken. What were you expecting, a funeral?- Yao Ming

Furthermore, he and free safety Kurt Coleman are adjusting to new defensive coordinator Luis Castillo asking the safeties to provide more run support than predecessor Sean McDermott.

Worst part about yesterday was Fox Broadcast.
That thing was shamefull. I hated the Pam Oliver interview with Asomugha. She says “Watch out for those Philly fans, they have a reputation”.
A reputation of what? Of supporting their teams in other cities, or of having 65,000 fan waitling list for season tickets. Or of having 25,000 fans in Bethlehem for practice?
Asomugha is new, no need for Fox to paint Philly as the villain.
It also bothered my how they kept banging away at that dream team thing. Ok you brought it up, but you don’t have to keep at it all broadcast. They obviously wanted to paint Philly as the villains all game. But they are supposed to have a non bias broadcast.
If they wanted to report on stories, how come they didn’t speak about Harrisons off-season verbal rampage? How come no one brought up Big Bens past rape accusations? Why was everything Anti Philly. I’m soooo sick of it.

As bad as yesterdays game was, there were some silver linings.
OLine played respectable, on some pass plays where Vick was sack, it was more Vick not dumping the ball. But overall, they did OK.
DLine did a nice job of pressuring Big Ben all game, Remember, we did not blitz that much. But Ben did get hit a few times and was under pressure.
McCoy, Lewis, Brown all ran the ball good. Lewis was exceptionally good, while McCoy did a very nice job as well.
As bad as our defense played, they only gave up 3.2 yards per run, and as bad as third down defense was, it gave up 58% of 3rd downs. Granted thats not great, but it actually seemed worst that it actually was. Truth is, Pit was just consitantly running, but it really wasn’t as effective as most think.
What killed is was 3rd down on passing, The cover 2 Man always has a weekness on the slot between CB and Safeties, maybe we go dime or Cover 1 in those spots while Safeties goes to man on the 4th reciever. We will fix that, but if a team goes 4 spread on you, 1 guy will have 10 yards to run since Safeties are in 2 deep zone. Give Ben credit, he read the defense and delivered the ball. But in the future, we may need to adjust, especially if the QB is reading it all day.
Truth be told, that is a scheme thing, and adjustments can be made easily.
Bad game, but definately fixable.

ok why does everyone keep saying our lbs are undersized?
Chaney is over 240, Matthews is 240, fokou is over 240 (I thought). Two of them are just shorter, but still over 6ft.
Idk I just don’t get the jump of a bridge feeling yet. We haven’t exactly been running anything except vanilla defenses and the Steelers kept running out 3wr bunch sets and a lot of play action. If we lay an egg again next week then I will be concerned and may jump off my bed….yes I said bed.

I really only take a few things from last night's game:
-Matthews isn’t ready. Which might not be a problem because as far as preparation for a season goes it’s still early. Maybe he can turn it around by Week 1. If not, I would be comfortable with Fokou, Chaney, Clayton instead of starting Matthews. But clearly Casey’s inexperience is a factor right now.
-Allen I’m not sure what to make of. I trust him because he looked pretty good at times last season, but last night was not good. I still have faith in him as a starter and I’m not ready to toss him aside just yet. For now I’ll chalk last night up to a bad game/still shaking off the rust.
-Kafka should be our #2 going into the season. I had a feeling that would be the case all along because asking Young to know this offense well enough to run it after just a few weeks is a really tall order. Kafka’s been in the offense for a year and clearly knows how to run the offense, even if it was against scrubs last night. Besides, since the 3rd QB can now play without deactivating the other two QB’s on the gameday roster there is no harm in putting VY as the 3rd. He can still be brought in for wildcat formations or whatever.
-Vick will be fine. He readily admitted he started forcing the issue because he knew he only had until halftime to get the team back into the game. That was the type of performance a good QB uses to discipline himself and I trust Vick will do just that.

I agree with all of this
especially about Matthews and Allen. Matthews, understandably is a rookie, but I was specifically keying into his play the game to see how he did and honestly he looked sealed up everytime. Just could not get any penetration. I have to wonder if AR and co are doing this to just see how can do in real NFL action but with all intentions of getting a vet at the start of the season.
On Allen, same as above and the more I think about it the more I think someone is going to be brought in. They are trying these packages out to test the rookies/second year players to ensure that they fit or can fit. I honestly believe with all the moves we have done, the FO is too smart to not pick someone up.
On Vick, yeah not worried nor worried on the rest of the starters. You could tell he was restraining himself to not run and get injured. He was trying things to try them and will study ALL of this this week.

i would like to just dismiss this game as a preseason game that doesnt matter but those are the same players that were relying on to win it all for us. just because its a preseason game does not mean the players take the game lightly and that is alarming to me
Keep in mind though
that not all the starters were in, game planning was completely vanilla and is more of a test on individual merits. When it comes time, the TEAM will be ready to play. This is all fixable.

Juan Castillo or Sean McDermott?
Why did we downgrade from Sean to Juan?
If I recall corectly we almost beat Green Bay last year and we were the NFC East Champs.
The problem we had was that Dimitri,Hanson & Harris just flat out sucked. If we had our defence from last year plus our CB’s from this year our defence would be perfect. Last year we stopped the run it was our garbage CB’s that sucked (Hanson,Dimitri and Harris) to be exact. The combination of Bunkly&Patterson worked great against the run.
If Sean McDermott had the luxury of Nnamdi & DRC helping Asaunte it would of been a SB Victory. Another thing when Bradley got hurt last year Chaney filled that gap even better than Bradley IMO so why put Casey Matthews at MLB? I looked at his college footage and came to the conclusion that he is just average nothing more and nothing less. That’s what happens when we play the name game. Casey is not Clay just like Eli is not Peyton, FACT!!! Now as far as Allen he needs to be put back at his natural position of FS and let our new guy Jarret play his natural position at S. I like this Jarret dude more then Allen and Coleman combined! Jarret is fast, smart and a big hitter. As far as Juan Castillo I would rather have Sean back with our new weapons. Sean understood defence. Why was Juan Blitzing on 3rd and long? Please answer that one somebody! Nnamdi Asaunte and DRC under the coaching of Juan Castillo is like a race car without a driver! As far as recievers it has to be Jackson,Maclin,Avant and Smith because that right their is a nightmare to any defensive coach. I hate to say it but Cooper and Vick don’t have a good chemistry don’t let the B-More game fool you. And Chad hall just sucks those passes were intercepted because he’s just a poor target. I seen Freshman HS recievers play better then him. I like McCoy but I like Lewis even more. Give this guy more carries and see for yourself he’s a monster at 5’8. Btw he picks up the blitz better then McCoy. Think Jones-Drew when you see Lewis but faster. C’mon Eagles lets get it together!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lewis faster than MJD?

my answer
Just because he played mlb when he was young does not automaticaly qualify him as the defensive coach of choice . The way he handeled the O-Line last year is the way he will handle defence this year. As far as the Lewis statement maybe not faster then MJD but just better imo.
I don't know much about your new DC can you hit me with a brief report in your eyes.
Although on the other topic,MJD has produced to a level that is impossible to put any rook on that level.

Castillo was not our 1st choice for a reason!
Let’s not forget we took Castillo because we had no choice. Other coaches we interviewed wanted the kind of money that the Eagles did not want to spend. So we kept it cheap with Castillo. Cheap now but expensive later.
But how does the way he was with your OL translate to your D?
And is your D system going to be much different?

You realize this makes you an idiot, right
His OL almost got Vick killed on the field
Different but worst then before, Steelers knew that they can run that ball down our throat with this new garbage defence. And now our S & FS are playing like crap thanks to this new interchangable philosophy that Juan believes in. A S should perfect his position at S and a FS should perfect his position as a FS but Juan thinks different. As far as MLB Chaney is the man if Juan keeps drinking the Matthews bath water were screwed.
