LOLGiants 8 Reasons why they are the NFC E Fav by KC Joyner

Ok there are arguments and there are STRAIGHT UP REACHES!! You know, like the NFL MVP candidate being lucky and the INT leader being UNLUCKY.

By Dan Graziano

I love a contrarian point of view, and K.C. Joyner's got one here. While everybody is gushing over the Philadelphia Eagles as free-agent champs and NFC East favorites, K.C. has written an Insider piece Insider listing eight reasons to think the New York Giants should be the favorites instead. Like I said, it's an Insider piece, so if you want to read it you can either buy the insider subscription or call my cell phone and I'll give you my password.

K.C.'s eight reasons are:

[+] EnlargeKenny Phillips Brian Spurlock/US PresswireSafety Kenny Phillips, 21, now healthy, is among the reasons the Giants could win the NFC East.

1. Michael Vick was lucky last season, as a high percentage of his potential interceptions weren't actually intercepted.

2. Eli Manning was unlucky last season on the opposite end of the same scale.

3. Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham are better against good coverage than DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin are.

4. Manning can overcome the loss of Kevin Boss and Steve Smith simply by throwing to Nicks and Manningham more.

5. Jason Pierre-Paul and Marvin Austin will improve the Giants' already strong pass rush.

6. Steve Weatherford is a better punter than Matt Dodge, who cost them games last season.

7. Offensive line coach Pat Flaherty is the best in the NFL, and that should help the transition to the reworked alignment there.

8. Kenny Phillips is fully healthy.

K.C. has numbers to back up many of these points, and many of them are points with which I agree. I think Phillips will be a huge help, agree completely on Weatherford and can easily believe both that Manning will throw fewer interceptions than he did last season and that Vick won't be quite as awesome as he was last season. On the comparison of the two teams' wideouts, I have no reason to doubt K.C.'s numbers.

I have specific issues with points 4, 5 and 7, as follows:

4. I don't think it's as simple as "throw it to Nicks and Manningham more." Nicks and Manningham surely benefited from defenses having to pay attention to Smith, who'd caught 107 balls the season before, when he was on the field. He's gone and has not been replaced.

5. I like Pierre-Paul and Austin fine, but they're not being added to the mix. They're replacing people who have departed. Mathias Kiwanuka moved back from the line to linebacker, and Pierre-Paul will take his spot. Barry Cofield signed with the Redskins, and Austin replaces him. It's a big leap to believe that those two young players will approximate the production and performance of those two veterans and a bigger one to believe they'll improve on it.

7. Flaherty could be a wizard, but if William Beatty isn't ready for the starting left tackle job in his third season in the league, the Giants' line will struggle. And as of right now, we still don't know if he is.

So what do I think of K.C.'s basic thesis? I think the Giants have a very good team as far as the front-line starters go, and I don't think it'd be some huge upset if they won the division. I have all kinds of respect for the work K.C. does and the numbers on which he is basing his conclusions. He makes a strong case and a case worth making amid all the Eagles hype.

But the way I see it, the Giants' problem the past couple of seasons hasn't been one of measurables.

The Giants' defense over the past two seasons has been inconsistent and hasn't always played up to the level of the talent on the roster. The same can be said, in places, for the running game and for Manning. The Giants were good enough to make the playoffs in 2009 and 2010 but didn't, and the reason they didn't was because the good players they have in key spots like that didn't always perform the way the numbers would expect them to perform. Supposedly reliable parts of the roster let them down when it mattered most. Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled. Manning threw interceptions. Kareem McKenzie had an inexplicably bad game against the Titans. Half of the defense quit on its coordinator in 2009.

That's the kind of stuff that doesn't show up in preseason projections, when we're imagining everyone playing as well as they can possibly play and predicting outcomes based on that. If the Giants stay healthy and play 16 games that reflect the talent on their roster, sure, they can be division champs. But that was true last season and the season before, too. And those teams, which looked a lot like this team except maybe deeper, didn't do it.

I love #4

Manning can just over come the loss of his two favorite targets by throwing to the X and Y WR more… Wow, talk about X’s and Os…

I am going to apply to ESPN very shortly seeing as it doesn’t take any thought to write articles. I hate b usting my ass doing metal roofing when I could be making a probable better salary by writing crap like this.

Seriously, how did ESPN let that article get posted? How? How could you get paid to write that?

ESPN has been BAD before, but this is OFF THE CHARTS SUCK!!!

OK I'll be the contrarian.

#4Kevin Boss was not, never was, nor will the TE position ever be Eli’s second favorite target. 32 balls caught last year. 44 is the most he has ever caught. Once Tiki left, the Giants passing game became all about the wideouts.

#5Pierre Paul makes the Giants MUCH better at RDE with spelling OSI. And, barring injury, Marvin Austin is not going to be leaned on at all this season. Tackle duties will be assigned as follows: Canty, Joseph, Bernard, and Tuck on 3rd and long. Austin will be getting reps when the situation allows it. He did not play football all of last year. The Giants don’t need him to play a big role personnel-wise and will develop him.

  1. I guess we can say we don’t know how good Beatty will be, yeah. But the majority of the evidence from last year suggests he will be good, and his strength and athletic ability point to an upside that says he will be very good. He’s young. Was drafted by an organization that does very well at picking and developing Olinemen, so the burden of proof falls on the naysayers, all things considered.

I think yours is a well reasoned argument.

Alot of people are not giving the Giants any playoff chances because the Eagles got better. I hate that argument. The Eagles are only 2 games on our schedule. We also play the NFC West, and I think we’re better than Dallas or the Deadskins. I can see us going 10 wins again kind of easily.

As for your arguments, I’m providing not so much rebuttals, but kinda rebuttals haha. As far as #4….

Eli Manning didn’t have Steve Smith for 8 games last year. And Hakeem Nicks for 4 games. Assuming, and this is important, assuming good health, he has Nicks for those 4 games again. Also, we got Domenik Hixon back, who, while not as good as Smith, is better than whoever took SS’s place last year….Derek Hagan and Mark Clayton. Also, Smith woulda missed the first 6 or so games here anyway, and will take some time even when coming back to perform to a higher level. We’ve had the microfracture experience with our players, and it usually takes a year or two to get perfectly healthy.

So while its not a great situation, and while we’d much rather have Smith, it isn’t a doomsday scenario by any stretch of the imagination.
Totally agree with you that the KC Joyner argument for #4 is garbage.

As for argument #5, Kiwanuka has been mentioned as being used as a Joker type player. We don’t use the base formation that often, so you’ll see Kiwi pass rushing in a 2 point stance. He’s still a pass rusher we added to our arsenal, which is better than last year when we didn’t have him at all. He was gone after 3 games. So indeed, he does add to our pass rush arsenal. Also (and can’t take preseason games too seriously) it looks like JPP has taken some big strides and should be a bigger player for us.

As for Austin, your argument is correct, but still not quite right. Austin isn’t replacing Cofield….Linval Joseph is. Joseph didn’t play much at all, but he’s slated as the starter. While Austin is talented, and (solely in my opinion) a beast….its a garbage argument to say that the Giants are NFC East favorites because of their draft picks THIS YEAR. The Eagles also had a draft. For all we know, you guys could have a hall of famer picked out. So using 2011 draft picks is not good reasoning, though, in absolute terms, yes, Austin will help out as part of the rotation.

As for KC Joyner’s final point on Pat Flaherty, I completely and wholeheartedly agree that he is one of THE BEST in the business. Trust me when I say that yes, he is a wizard. You do provide a good argument because Beatty is unproven.

He did play, and played well allowing no sacks before getting hurt, but did cause a high amount of penalties. I expect that to be rectified. If it does, then our OL should be fine. If not, then not.

And on your last bit, nothing you wrote is wrong in my eyes. I completely and wholeheartedly agree. Inconsistency killed this team, and continues to be a problem for it. Right now, and rightfully so, the Eagles are the NFC favorites and will continue to be until the regular season starts and real games start to be played.

BBI – I will give you that the giants are a talented team. They play us tough , they are our biggest rivals and IMO the biggest stepping stone to winning the east.

My point is that, sooo many of these “The eagles are going to suck because _” are not even arguments, they are reaches!!!!

oops lol

well, I guess my response was to DG then.

But yeah, I know while you guys have won 6 straight, the games always have been close. Hopefully we make it over the hurdle over this year. You guys obviously are the favorites, but can’t count anything out when it comes to NFC East battles. Should be a fun year, Joe. And yeah, any argument about “Why the Eagles will suck” are garbage because unless there’s someone arrested, or injured, or dead…the eggs have enough pieces in place to be a strong strong contender. With the pieces that you guys have, its ludicrous to suggest you will be anything BUT good. Just how good remains to be seen.

A few things are working in his favor

1- Now that he is the NFL, he has access to a better training program, which will help him bulk up without losing any of his athleticism.
2- Being able to learn from a pro like Tuck will help him develop professionally.
3- He doesn’t have to be the DL savior in NY, they have plenty of guys who can shoulder the load, letting him play without any added pressure.
4- He had some success last year, and success breeds success. Now that he knows he can do it, it should make him work even harder to be the best pass rusher he can be.

I thought he had bust potential as well, but that is being replaced with stud potential.

JJP’s going to bust, I’m very sure of it.

OK

Giants are better
Dallas better
Redskins better

Im bored. Who the fuck cares? I never voted that I even think KC is a legitimate human being and deserves rights. His opinion means nothing. He could die tomorrow and I wouldn’t care. Im not upset at KC. He gets his opinion. I just don’t get why people care what someone else thinks. It’s in his professional opinion that the Eagles stink. Just because you are employed doesn’t mean you are a professional. “fuck em’! with hand cuffs on and crazy glue on your lips” – Rest in piece bernie mac.

Because he's a professional sports writer for one of the largest sports entertainment companies

To be fair to KC

he did use stats. Whether those stats are legitimate or prove his point is a different argument altogether, but he did use stats.

You must have missed the

Blue jays stealing signs in CF bleachers, and signalling a batter over 400 feet away, all in the time BEFORE a pitcher begins his wind up. That was the worst atrocity I have read on EPSN in quite some time for how ridiculous it was and how it had ZERO evidence.

There’s a couple things he’s ignoring in his article, I’ll start with his 8 points…

1 and 2 seem valid, although Manning has always made plays that make us wonder why he was a #1 pick. He’ll make some of those this year too. I don’t recall Vick ever doing that last year, but could be wrong.

3 doesn’t cut the mustard with me. If Jackson and Maclin are covered, Vick can throw to Celek/McCoy/Avant/Smith. If they are covered, he can run. If Jackson and/or Maclin are open, it can very easily be 6 points right then and there. Manning simply doesn’t have the weapons around him to do that, and esp. against a team with good CBs and now with no TE security blanket to fall back on, I see this offense struggling at times.

4 may be right, but not immediately. Manning seems to have a security blanket. It was Boss last year, Smith the year before and before that it was Burress. I don’t know how many times I was screaming for the Eagles to double whoever Manning’s blanket was at the time only to watch him throw to him time and time again and light them up. He’ll find one again this year, but not immediately.

5 sure.

6 In very rare circumstances to punters win games. There’s a reason why very few are drafted.

7 The Eagles just got, some would argue, the best OL coach of all time in Mudd this year. I also like the talent level of the OL of the Eagles more, even if the depth may still be a bit shaky.

8 Sure.

My biggest problem with this is that the author is assuming that the Giants are the best team in the division. The Eagles won this division last year, and unless you think the Giants had a better offseason then the Eagles, you’re starting point has to have the Eagles ahead of the Giants. So unless you think that a better punter and some better luck trumps not having the talent the Eagles do, you have to consider the Eagles the favorite for this division.

1 and 2. Vick playoffs vs Packers(play that ended the game.)
3. check the stats its true.
4. true but WSS..
5. check
6. See J Feagles… Weatherford set the record for punts inside the 20 and was stella inside the 10.
7. I said it before ill say it again . Vick could make the 90s Cowboy lines look bad. P Flat is outstanding Oline will be fine..
8. check.

Your biggest problem = They said the same about the 2007 and 2008 Giants.. result SB & a 11-5 first place finish. Even better if not for Plax.

Man…I’m sick of people ripping on Vick. Fuck em. Nobody considers that he didn’t even get reps with the first team in camp!
Nobody considers that he just got his legs back last year!
NObody considers that he spent two years away from the league.
Nobody considers that he has had a complete attitude transformation.
Nobody considers that he, along with his precocious supporting cast, may actually have IMPROVED skillwise since last year.

I really hope Vick tears it up this year. Fuck KC Joyner you biased prick

Why did he get cheered in Atlanta then? Tons of people like Vick because, despite his transgressions, he is one of the most talented athletes of our generation. People don’t like to see wasted talent.
As for the second part of what you said:
Giants- I root for all Giants to fail besides Mario Manningham (go blue), and even him I am just neutral on. So, yes, if Vick played for NY, I’d root for him to fail.
Cowboys- see what I wrote for the giants.
Redskins- who cares?

I honestly don't care.

The Eagles have a talent level unmatched by anybody at the moment (sure some teams specific groups stack up well but all around talent ehh) and with that talent we have great guys who want to see it work.

If our LB’s are even solid and our OL holds together a little better than they did last season then we’re going to be a very good team.

Giant’s didn’t improve on paper, the Cowboys didn’t improve on paper, the LOLskins however improved quite a bit on paper…

Lol @ Potential interceptions.

I don’t know how to approach that “stat”. Is he saying, “If a defender was in the area that Vick threw an incompletion it would be intercepted”? And of course, luck, not skill, has everything to do with your season.

by WarGeist on Aug 17, 2011 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

I'm not going to even pretend I didn't see those passes fall off the Defenders hands.

There were a good 4-5 passes I saw where Vick hit the defender right in the hands and they Defender just didn’t catch it.

I know they were there, I know they weren’t picks so I don’t know how to count them except to say Vick needs to watch that.

Plenty of issues

1. This is like playing the “what if” game; the FACT of the matter is that Vick was not intercepted on those throws and I am sure that the metric used for potential balls that should be intercepted is the same metric that can be used to measure the TD’s that should have been caught as well.
2. If a pass is thrown and it is tipped, redirected, or what ever and a defender TRIES to catch the ball that is not bad luck. A tipped ball is intended to be tipped. If the ball bounces off a WR’s helmet, chances are he was not expecting it or it was a bad throw, not bad luck. If a ball goes through a WR’s hands that is not bad luck. A lot of the bad luck interceptions came as a result of either the D making it happen or Offensive players having a bad game or lack or focus/ concentration… not luck.
3. So Vick has no one else to throw the ball to? The counter argument to this is that Jax is faster then almost anyone else in the league and Maclin runs better routes then Manningham.
4. How is this even valid? Well I lost a pro bowl slot receiver to the Eagles so I will throw to my other two guys who are super covered more. I can understand Boss being replaceable with minimal effect. So half a point stands in his favor.
5. Remains to be seen JPP and MA are filling some pretty big shoes so this is a wait and see.
6. If you punter is loosing you games you were not in a great spot to begin with.
7. Same could be said about Mudd; not a point t hat makes them (Giants) a favorite in my book
8. And Vick is fully healthy, and Jax, is fully healthy, and so are a lot of other players. This argument is stupid as it infers that the Eagles had no major injuries last year. Sure KP helps a lot but last time I checked he was not a superstar game changer. Let us keep a guys worth to a team in perspective here.
