Over the last several years, I have always speculated that Andy Reid would be one of the coaches that goes out on top. A Super Bowl victory, followed by an "I completed my goal" speech, and Big Red retires....
But I am beginning to feel differently than that....
I was thinking the other day....Would Andy retire this year, if the Eagles were to win the Super Bowl?
I love the idea of Big Red going out like that. Guns-a-blazin as he sails off into the sunset, hoisting the Lombardi high above his tusks. It would be an epic end, to a long career that fell just short so many times. The monkey would be off of his back, and he would be considered not only a top coach of his era, but quite possibly a top coach in NFL history. I love when guys have the opportunity to go out on top. Jerome Bettis and Bill Cowher went out like that, and I think its such an honorable way to go.
"I'm the best, and I earned the right to leave before you have a chance to prove me wrong." Love it.
But then I realized that Andy isnt just building a team to win right now. He's still building a team that can win for years to come. We're unbelievably young in almost every major position. Why would he retire this year IF the Birds won it all? Why would he hand off such a promising young squad to someone else?
Not only has he helped orchestrate some major free agent signings this year, but he didnt even mortgage the future to get there. We still have all of our draft picks in place for next year, PLUS an additional 2nd and 4th rounder. Our cap situation is still fantastic. No major dead weight contracts looming in the shadows that will catch up to us. It's just so ideal for long-term winning, that there's only 1 word i can come up with to explain it; efficient.
I am intrigued by the fact that the Eagles appear to be in a "win now" mode, but when you start looking at everything on paper, you can easily see that they're in "win now" and also "win later" mode. This team is stacked, and we arent old. Its a glorious position to be in....
So with that I ask, IF the Eagles were to win the Super Bowl in the 2011-2012 season, would Andy Reid return next year to make another run, or would he hang up the whistle and move on after he won the Lombardi?
