It’s Dogra’s job to get Smith as much money as he can so it would be ridiculous for him to NOT have asked the Giants to match or beat the Eagles offer.
Negotiations can be extremely complex. A few years ago, the Eagles extended a low ball offer to Brian Dawkins. Dawkins said “no thinks for now” while he continued to test the market. He flew to Denver and was presented with an offer he couldn’t refuse. The Eagles gambled… and lost. Bigtime. Their FS that season was Macho Harris. Major gaffe. Apparently, Dawkins didn’t give the Eagles the chance to match either. No should he have. Had he gone back to Philly with Denver’s offer, who’s to say Denver wouldn’t have just gone out and signed a different safety instead? And then Dawkins’ over-market offer would be gone.
The Giants did the same thing. They floated a shitty offer to Smith, and expected that Smith would give the Giants the opportunity to match. But the Eagles came with a legitimate offer, and Smith/Dogra signed. If the Giants would have matched, then shame on them for initially misplaying their hand. Blame Reese here, not Smith/Dogra. Smith and Dogra had a good deal on the table. They didn’t risk seeing that offer get away, and signed. As Wesley Snipes said in "White Men Can’t Jump: “Sometimes you smoke and sometimes you get smoked… And you got smooooooked!” Well, the Giants got smoked here.

Good point but...
In the long term, I believe the Eagles won. We have younger guys at the helm while Dawkins is ageing. Even if we had Dawkins, the RCB was still a black hole.

The reason? Offensive line turnover.
Wait, what about all the continuity that was lauded for the past two weeks? I thought the Eagles had a lot of turnover too. In fact, wasn’t that supposed to be the reason our ‘experiment’ wouldn’t work? Why didn’t the Eagles blow donkey nuts against a 2-14 squad?
Of course, the caveat is preseason doesn’t matter. And that’s correct. But the hypocrisy in their beliefs is completely out of control.

He’s one player. They have terrible LBs, they have no depth on their D Line and their O line and running game is questionable. This is Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder style team building. Not only is it only a list of sports CEO’s in NJ, the Giants aren’t even a NJ team… technically. They really must be running out of good news to report up there.
They think the Eagles are pulling a Jones or a Snyder—— We are still under cap and we have more draft picks the next few years than most teams have in 5. This is an allignment of the stars and it was done through good front office work; not just expectations and inuendo.
And of course some of this are win now moves (Brown, Smith) but the Birds didn’t mortgage their future.
