Giants Fans Attack Steve Smith On Facebook
One great thing about athletes using social media is that it lets them get closer to the fans. One really terrible thing about athletes using social media is that it lets them get closer to the fans... Steve Smith wrote a thank you to his fans and former team on his facebook page this evening.
What followed was a fairly disgusting torrent of racist, homophobic, foul and hate filled comments, most of which wished him a career ending injury. This is because a football player got a better offer from another team and took it. And while in this case it is Giants fans who are guilty of this awful display, I'm not going to act like any other fans would be that much different. But I think what was most surprising about the level of hatred and vitriol here is that it's not even an anonymous forum. It's facebook. So most of these people have their name and photo attached to this awful stuff.
So, if you can stomach it, hold your nose and check out some of what these people had to say to Smith after the jump...
We'll start off with a real fun one. The most racist and foul of the bunch and yet four people "liked it."
Well, that last one is kinda funny.

Seriously, does he have a problem saying douchebag? Or is he under the misguided thought that calling someone a bag of vinegar would have more zing? Cause when you need to explain it with a “that’s douche btw”, it takes the sting out of it.
hehe

We loved him
And we’re heart broken. I hope you can understand
Understand yes
But when Dawk left for a more lucrative contract to Denver we know he bleeds green and I hung my Autographed Dawk jersey in my office with pride. Not destroy the man on Face Book
If Dawk had left in, say, 2002, we’d have a lot different opinion of him. Like if DeSean goes to the Cowboys…oh man. That’d be bad.
Q and Westy and Dawk leaving…we knew they were going. It wasn’t a huge surprise. Kind of like Akers.
But I agree, this reaction seems WAY over the top.

If DJax left for the Cowboys
tomorrow, then he would certainly be getting hate posts on Facebook…from the ignorant Philly fans. And the national media would no doubt run with that.
I think the rest of us would realize that the FO failed to offer him a good deal, and he went with a better contract offer from a new team.
Giants fools are blaming Steve Smith when they should be blaming their own inept management.
I just love love the fact that the Eagles are continually getting under the Giants’ skin. “Soft and overrated”

Can you think
of any player that the Eagles fans got that upset with for signing with another NFCE team?
I can think of TO when he went to the ‘Boys, but that situation was MUCH different. I can’t think of anytime Eagles fans harassed a former player who left in FA on good terms (and didn’t talk trash (or do a stupid rap) about the organization lol)
I already posted on Steve’s Wall. Show him some support for sure!
I can remember VIVIDLY
when my dad woke me up to go to school in the morning and told me Jeremiah Trotter had signed with the redskins… I didn’t end up going to school that dayu
I was angry as well
However the Eagles removed the franchise tag from him, so we pretty much knew he was gone. I was more angry at the Eagles for not paying him and leaving a huge whole at MLB.
Pfft, he was obviously a double agent the whole way.
Got a huge deal from them, assed up their cap, sucked for them, got them to cut him, came back for the minimum, and made the Pro Bowl.

This is the bad side
of sports passion. There is alot of good about being a fan and caring about your teams. Even good natured ribbing, teasing, trash talking, and strong dislike towards another team and their fans is great.
When it gets to the point that people are wishing for injuries, slinging racial slurs, and hoping people die, it gets unacceptable. If anything this makes me think some of my reactions and regret them even if they’ve never gotten to this level.
I hope the non-idiot Giants fans can shine through on this towards Smith and I hope Eagles fans everywhere can reflect and try not to be like this.
That being said, I love sticking it to an NFC East Rival like this =).

Been following BGN for some time now, but your comment made me want to join the coversation. Thank you for a very insightful comment. Sports is something that we can all get behind: gives a reason to cheer, hope, and be witness to a greater community. Not being able to realize that the bigger picture of life and the respect for individuals should be separated from our dearest form of entertainment, does no justice to the game and should be condemed by those that truely find enjoyment in it.

How can these people even consider themselves fans of the giants and/or steve smith???

Defensive ends take much more punishment than WRs do. If they’re hurt or not 100%, it shows more than it does in a WR.
And you didn’t really answer my question. Are you saying it was okay for your FO to not even take a minimal chance on a young Pro Bowler? Yes, Nicks, Manningham, and Hixon are around, but there’s a bit of a void after that and even Hixon is coming off an injury.
I would believe the Giants are trying to win now, like the Eagles, Packers, Saints, etc. I highly doubt not offering Smith a contract like he got helps your chances.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Ramsas Barden was catching everything before going down last yr.
They also drafted slot guy Jerrel Jernigan in the 3rd round because i think they seen this coming.
For the record We heard of no offers from any other team. So they prob low balled the shit out of him with incentives.

I didn't realize optimism = homerism

Giants are a better team without SS12, would be a better example of being a homer. is my guess.

There's nothing wrong with being a homer
But that’s what you’re being all the same. Optimism may not directly equal homerism, but it does when it’s blind.

Angry as all hell
I’m not so much of a dick though that I’d wish injury upon him. I appreciate everything that he’s done for my favorite organization, but there are some things that you just don’t do. Leaving to go to your rival is probably the cardinal one. Still, I respect his decision.
I’m annoyed at the front office, but not as much because, yeah, they gave him a low offer, but that’s just negotiating…you never give a fair deal at first. They were probably ready to negotiate with him, but it got confirmed that he didn’t give them the chance.
….at least, that’s what the story is right now.
I honestly have no idea what his impact will be. He’s really good because of his precision route running, so a balky knee isn’t exactly a good sign. Who knows what will happen.
Right now though, just a fan favorite (and personal favorite of mine) just sucks.

Is there a link for this? PFT said something that sounds quite different:
Smith said that he could be ready to play by Week Two, possibly by Week One. He explained that the Eagles had been talking to his agent "for weeks," and that he had been waiting for the Giants to make a decision.

Thanks but...
We still like links here, its part of what makes BGN fun to come to… knowing that comments posted have an actual source somewhere. So at your leisure, if possible, link please.
I did some searching myself
Newsday was subscriber only, so I couldn’t look there, but here are some other NYC papers: The Times, The Post, and The Daily News
The Times doesn’t mention this at all, but says the Eagles had been talking to Smith a lot.
The Post is the closest to supporting this view, saying the Giants’ offer from two weeks ago wasn’t countered
The Daily News says that the Eagles offer “was ‘way, way more’ than the Giants were willing to pay” and that “Smith said he didn’t think the Giants were able to match the Eagles’ offer, although a source close to him said the Giants didn’t even try.”
To me, it sounds like all of this is consistent with the following timeline:
- Giants give Smith a terrible offer two weeks ago, “way way less” than $2M plus incentives
- Smith starts taking the calls from the Eagles
- Giants and Smith meet on Monday and Tuesday
- Smith tries to get a better offer from the Giants, likely by saying the Eagles are interested in him too
- Giants still offer squadoosh, they “don’t even try” to match
- Smith signs with Eagles on Wednesday
Maybe he didn’t call them one last time on Wednesday and say “the pen is in my hand, are you suuuure?” But how many meetings over how many weeks do you expect a free agent to give them? At some point, he needs to move on and start learning the other team’s playbook.
Heh. No sooner do I finish all that than PFT posts something citing the Newark Star-Ledger. Dangit, I forgot about Jersey.
Anyway, I agree completely with Florio’s take. The Giants had a mechanism available to obtain right of last refusal and chose not to exercise it. Still, Smith talked to the Giants for two weeks after free agency started. He met with them for two days right before signing the Eagles’ offer. How indignant can they be that he didn’t come back to them again the next day?
And I’m reminded of the ongoing deficit debate: faced with a gap between their offers and other teams’ interest, the Giants refused to accept any increase in their offer at all and wanted to close the gap exclusively by publicly undermining his value to other teams. How much loyalty should they expect from him if that’s their approach to negotiations?
While I find all these hilarious…

This one does kinda have a point, except for those last 2 sentences.

*On a scale of 1-10 how full of shit is sal pal?

To be honest I don’t think Dawk would of ever went to another NFC East team if he had a choice. He became one of us so much that I don’t think it would feel right to him. I remember his first year gone hearing say how he still hates the Cowboys & stuff when they had to play them & then we all know how it was when he came back he couldn’t even come on the field for warmups.
Twitter- @kjbrophy
Interesting point
Dawk, McNabb & Westbrook had been here much longer, and while Donnie inspires a mixed reaction, he did get that ovation, and those other two guys will never get anything but love from the fans.
The FO took the brunt of the rage for Dawk, as they should here. Similar in how they underestimated what it would take to get a guy re-signed.
This signing is proof that players want to be wanted more than anything, and money is just a way of showing it (they also wanna win & contribute)

Over the past weekend my boss(Packers fan) got to meet SS at Pierce college here in the San Fernando Valley CA, SS is into cross country as my boss, he told me today that he and SS were running up the mountain sides of the college together, I asked him did he looked injured at all, he said he ran 100% up and down the mountains, than tackled the bleachers.. Sounds good to me….
You know…I understand why Eagles fans hated T.O. when he went to Dallas — he trashed a team with superbowl aspirations and caused some splits in the locker room that probably never really did heal for as long as 5 was still around. Or even Red Sox fans hating Johnny Damon when he went to the Yankees, since he was so iconic to their “bunch of lovable idiots” persona.
But Steve Smith never did anything to hurt the Giants or their chemistry and never did anything but be a good team player, nor is he iconic enough to be perceived as “OMG what a fuckin’ traitor.”
I just don’t see why there’s this level of vitriol from them. It sounded like his first choice was to remain with the Giants.
When our players leave, our reactions are nothing like this
Example: Broderick Bunkley. Yeah he dicked us over and demanded to go somewhere else when he first got traded, but no Eagles fan (to my knowledge) wanted the man to die or get seriously hurt. Of course many of us were like “f*** him, i hope he doesnt do s***”, but never anything about him getting hurt in any sort of way.
Also, Giants fans should be more upset at their Front Office rather than Steve Smith. No doubt in my mind he would have stayed if they matched the offer we gave him.
Many fans couldn’t tell you who Bunkley was. I’ll say it is different.

I would say among the younger generation it's been pretty strong since 2007 or so.
I got started in 2005 and it had expanded beyond colleges within just a couple years I think. I guess professional athletes may not have been on it as intensely until a couple years ago though, so you may have a good point there.
Yeah, everyone didn’t want him. It wasn’t just the Eagles fan base but the whole NFL base who didn’t want Vick to play. Now, most teams wish they took a chance on him.
