The Linc - Would The Eagles Miss Maclin More Than Jackson?

While DeSean Jackson's holdout and his appearance on Monday with agent Drew Rosenhaus was dramatic, it is the absence of Jeremy Maclin that might most trouble Eagles fans.

Philadelphia Eagles training camp: Free agent Chris Wilson bolsters linebackers - NFL - Sporting News
The team continued to bolster the linebackers group, signing veteran free agent Chris Wilson, a former Redskins defensive end who will transition to an outside linebacker in the Eagles’ 4-3 scheme. Wilson will likely compete for one of the two OLB spots, which are straying from the traditional strong-side and weak-side in new coordinator’s Juan Castillo’s defense and becoming interchangeable.

Maclin or Desean

I think we would miss Maclin more. He is more constant during games, and even if he is not the big threat as much as Jackson, he made some beautiful long receptions.

I tend to agree with this. The next question will be, how will they deal with Maclin’s contract next season…..something to watch…..will they be able to afford everyone?

There are some absolute gems in there

3-7 he goes on a roll, but I got a big kick out of at least 16 of the 25.

Really great stuff.

Based on what he keeps saying I’ll be surprised if VY throws more completions then INTs. After reading about his little temper tantrum after he threw a horrible pass to JLH and I just don’t know about that guy.

That one trick is pretty good, but Maclin is a complete receiver.

The Barnwell article is surprisingly uninformed

Not once does he mention the 30% rule that was in effect prior to the season – nor does he discuss DeSean’s return skills or the scheme and match-up problems his speed gives defenses. More than anything, it feels like a Giants fan is trying to find any sort of explanation as to why the Eagles wouldn’t look to re-sign DeSean, just so his favorite team won’t have to face him twice a year.

It reeks of false hope and desperation.

by cwel87 on Aug 10, 2011 7:24 AM EDT reply actions

But yes

We’d miss Maclin more because he’s a much more traditional receiver – and a burgeoning one at that.

by cwel87 on Aug 10, 2011 7:26 AM EDT up reply actions

For a guy associated with FO, Barnwell is surprisngly terrible.

There are at least a dozen reasons that article was crap. Catch rate is a lousy statistic. If Jackson really has left 300 yards in dropped passes on the field over three seasons (Barnwell doesn’t say how many games he looked at) but over 48 possible regular season games, that translates to 6.25 yards per game. It was just lousy analysis.

by Tracer Bullet on Aug 10, 2011 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

If Mac can't go..

That’s a big loss and one that I don’t know if you can replace right away. Makes me more anxious to get this first preseason game underway to see if there is anyone that could step up into Mac’s roll, but I don’t think we have that guy on our roster. We have won games with worse, but I just hope that we do NOT go into a one team sweepstakes for Randy Moss.

by Bono Hit My Car on Aug 10, 2011 7:24 AM EDT reply actions

Tough question...

We would miss both but I think we’d miss DeSean Jackson more just because of the effect he has on defenses. DeSean makes defenses play the Eagles differently and at the end of the day, he is the only guy on the Eagles who has that effect on secondaries. Jeremy Maclin is a beast and a half but I think we could replace his production (receptions, red-zone, short-mid range kind of stuff) with guys like Brent Celek, Jason Avant, LeSean McCoy and Riley Cooper. You can’t replace the deep threat like DeSean.

From the Reuben Frank article:
3) Limas Sweed has seven career catches. DeSean Jackson has seven career catches … that went for touchdowns of 68 yards or more. Sweed ($809,583) makes more per year than Jackson ($769,960).

And to think I wanted the Eagles to draft Limas Sweed…..

Would The Eagles Miss Maclin More Than Jackson?

No. They are equally important. I don’t think you can legitimately say that Maclin doesn’t benefit from what DeSean forces safteies to do and how coordinators are forced to game plan against the Eagles. I also think that without Maclin, the Eagles offense would be incredibly one-dimensional and even more reliant on the big play than it already is. Pay DeSean and let’s get this shit moving.

From the Barnwell article

“Even while averaging 22 yards per catch in 2010, Jackson’s DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) was a middling 2.3 percent, which ranked 44th amongst receivers.”

And this is why Sabermetrics is stupid. Espcecially when you try to use it in football. Dumb fucking stuff right there.

To play Devil's Advocate

I don’t think he’s arguing that Jackson isn’t a gamebreaking player. I think he’s arguing that against better defenses Desean’s numbers tend to suffer greatly.

calling it now

Djax gets a 5 yr deal with 5to 6 mil guaranteed the first yr with incentives up to 7.5 , total guaranteed 30 to 35 mil.

Keep him happy this yr and have his salary increase as he gets deeper into the contract, proving he can stay healthy by reaching incentives.

FO tends to reward consistency

Aaron Schatz will be the first to tell you that the formulas undervalue big play guys like Jackson. He is also quick to say that it’s no substitute for actually watching games.

Is Chris Wilson

actually good enough to challenge for a starting spot? Or is the 1st back up OLB in case Chaney has to move to MIKE because of Casey? I’ve never seen the guy play so I was wondering

Yeah, I'm dubious of his skills as an LB

From ESPN Insider:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/fa?playerId=10794

Wilson has been a backup since entering the league in 2007. He is a bit of a tweener (size and athleticism) as an outside backer in a 3-4 front or defensive end in a 4-3 scheme. He lacks great quickness and agility when dropping in coverage and is best when rushing the passer. He can set the edge defending the run but is inconsistent to separate to stay active to the pile. Wilson maybe best suited as a nickel rush end in sub packages in a 4-3 defensive front. He has developed his overall awareness and reactions as an NFL defender but is most valuable as a core special team’s player.

if any hasnt already watched casey matthews in the national championship game, i suggest u do.

In the biggest game of the yr, against the what who ran over dbs and lbs all yr Matthews was a beast. I know college doesn’t translate to the pros always, but how he fell to the 4th rd is beyond me. What was his knock again?

Linebackers

I really think that we’re ok at the linebacker position. They have traditional playing roles. There’s going to be a lot of 5-6 pretty damn good DBs on the field at all times….. We have already seen Fokou and Chaney stuff the run pretty well, now we hear that Chaney is improving his pass coverage every day…..the only thing Matthews has to do is manage his calls and do a serviceable job. It may take a game or two to get this scheme down, but I am confident (and excited) to see it.

HAHAHAH!!!

Here we go again.. We have threads with most people agreeing that our number 2 receiver is better than our number 1 receiver. You guys have the right to your own opinion so have fun with it. But It’s still crazy to me that almost every other teams fans believe Jackson is one of the best in the NFL while our own fans dont even believe he is the best on our team. Comparing D Jacks to wes welker is retarded. Wes Welker catches 4 yard slants and quick screens that are basically equivalent to long running plays.. You guys always seem to sound like puppets. Tom Brady can throw 18 picks and still be considered great. Vick can throw 18 picks and we will hear how old and how terrible he is as a qb.. hey.. didnt peyton manning just throw 18 picks or something? isnt he also pushing 40?
