Brodrick Bunkley Has Not Reported To Browns, Trade In Jeopardy?
Over the weekend, the Eagles announced that they traded DT Brodrick Bunkley to the Browns in exchange for a fifth round pick. The trade was filed with the league office Sunday and all seemed well. However, it is Monday now and Bunkley has yet to show up to the Browns.
Browns GM Tom Heckert is acting like it's an Eagles issue saying "You'll have to talk to Philadelphia about that one" and saying that the Browns never officially announced a move. As PFT pointed out, most all NFL trades are contingent on a player passing a physical. If the play never shows up to take the physical, obviously he can't pass it, so there could be a danger that the trade is invalidated. If that were to happen, you'd have to think that the Eagles would probably just cut him at that point. If they do, I wouldn't expect the Browns to be major bidders for his services...
This is somewhat similar to when Richard Seymour was dealt to the Raiders. He took several days before he decided to show up, but eventually did. We'll have to see what happens with Bunkley, but at this point it looks like the trade is on hold.

Browns fan here....
Rotoworld is reporting that the Browns are on the hook for the 5th no matter what. Trades are ‘at your own risk’.
Of course that’s rotoworld, so who knows.
Personally, I hope the Browns are on the hook, since I don’t think it’s fair that other teams should have to deal with the consequences when someone doesn’t want to report to the Holmgren / Heckert led Browns.

Yea.. you would think it would be the Browns’ FO would have contacted his agent just to make sure he wouldn’t be a problem.
The Jruth shall be told.
Yep.
Total clusterfuck in Cleveland. Heckert is a horrible GM. Everyime something goes wrong, it’s everyone’s fault but his.

Heckert's a tool.
The more I see of him in Cleveland, the more I realize that he built his reputation on Reid’s work.

Exactly right.
The only one who doesn’t realize this is Holmgren. Though Holmgren built his rep on Ron Wolf’s work, so there you go.

maybe Holmgren wanted a stooge

I’m sure he’ll show up at some point. What options does he really have?

LoL
Too true.
He can refuse to show up to the Browns, thinking we’ll just cut him. But then he’ll turn a lot of teams off.
by Jason-E on Aug 1, 2011 3:46 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Then again....
So long as he doesn’t turn off every team, he’ll likely land in a better position, Cleveland being Cleveland. He at least might land somewhere with a competent front office and coaching staff.

Agreed...
The question comes down to how the league views the “must pass a physical” requirement…technically, dude hasn’t failed it yet…he just hasn’t taken it…so it seems that CLE would have to send a 5 day letter…but if they do, they’ll be acknowledging that they are in control of his contract…gotta be a league rule on this after Seymour, you would think…

My mojo so dope. BITCH!
Revis's Island< Nnamdi's Nation< Jimmy Smith's EGO
He shouldn't mess around
because if the Eagles cut him, he mind up making less or possibly out of the league. It is not that he is that bad he just has a kinda big contract and you know what your gonna get- a very average player.
Cowboys suck.
shouldnt there be some kind of player penalty for this?
i mean a player decides he doesnt like the team hes being traded to, so he doesnt show up. the trade becomes void and he is to return to his original team. that team doesnt want him back because he fucked up the trade and he was expendable anyways. so now what? he gets cut and now hes a free agent and can sign anywhere that will have him? .. sounds stupid to me. there WILL be interest in Buck. he was a starter for us for many years and was decent at least… but am I alone in thinking that he shouldnt just be awarded free agent status because he didnt like the team he was traded to?
Penalty
Penalty is dude doesn’t get a paycheck, is considered suspended, and Eagles retain his rights through 2012 at 2011 prices. They don’t have to cut him, nor does he take a roster spot. I think he does apply to the cap unless we cut him, but if we rework Vick, we’ll not have issues there, unless DJax really does want Nnamdi money. We also can wait until everyone breaks camp to cut him, so he’s jacked from getting a job this year.

But...
I agree there needs to be league rules related to this…would involve the CBA…but every trade would then be a free agent situation just by not showing up…I mean, imagine if DRC refused to report, trying to get more $?
---AstrosFan (Austin Lawyer and Sports Fan)
Basically...
In sum, if he’s a no show, Eagles send him a 5 day letter…he still doesn’t show, Eagles put him on a suspended list…he doesn’t get paid, and they toll Bunk’s contract for another year and Eagles would have his rights…it does not say what that does to the cap, since his contract is tolled…but teams would negotiate how they want to handle…I’m guessing the Browns would just want the deal to terminate, since now his value is even less than a 5th rounder…

Hillarious Crying over Spilled Milk in Cowgirl Country
I don’t know if this has already been posted, but I was in tears listening to this radio show from the Cowboys website as they discuss missing out on Nnamdi. The disappointment, the dejection, the dumbfounded pauses, it is priceless.
