What is DeSean's value?
In the interest of giving board space to this topic in the FanPosts section, I thought I'd pose the question of DeSean Jackson's true value to the Eagles...a value that can not be entirely measured in stats.
So what's he worth?
We all know that this is going full pushups mode inside of a week given Jackson's agent and his penchant for douchey showboating. But Jackson's gripe is certainly legitimate.
Here are some of the salaries of the NFL's top receivers and, undoubtedly, Rosenhaus is going to ask for top receiver money. Incidentally, today's contracts to Sidney Rice (5 years 40+ million) and Santonio Holmes (5 years 50 million) only serve to drive up the price.
Andre Johnson--7 years $73 million
Roddy White--6 year $50 million
Calvin Johnson--6 year $55 million
Larry FItzgerald--4 year $40 million
Reggie Wayne--six-year, $39 million
Now these are arguably the best 5 receivers in the game, so for DeSean to think he is going to get top-tier money like Johnson & Johnson is probably a bit far fetched. But is he worth to the Eagles what Santonio Holmes is to the Jets? Is he worth what Brandon Marshall (5 years, $50 million) is to the Dolphins? DeSean was paid $480,000 last year and stands to make $565,000 this year.
This holdout could last a long time.

Like I stated earlier, this issue really concerns me.
As a fan, I love DeSean because he can make a wesome plays and totally affect games. As a fan, I can also become very frustrated with DeSean because I feel his production can be inconsistent… to an extent where he can DISAPPEAR in games.
Like cin7 suggested earlier, (although IDK how possible it is), I think DeSean is worth a very incentive-laden contract. My fear is that DeSean’s best attribute (speed) will diminish with time and he’ll diminish as a player, while we’ll be massively overpaying for him.
If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.
by PhiladelphiaEagles on Jul 27, 2011 8:32 PM EDT reply actions
I do agree with that.
You can stop DeSean in ways you can’t stop Fitzgerald or the Johnsons because of the size issue. However, he backs safeties 15 yards off the line of scrimmage and opens up tons of space for the offense. Hell, the offense is what it is because of DeSean. I don’t think Rosenhaus is going to go for heavy incentive laden.
Q: What do a leaky tampon and Sean McDermott's defense have in common?
A: They are equally ineffective in the red zone.

I agree about the speed diminishing..
if he gets a long term deal, say 5-7 years, what will he offer in the last few years oh his deal say he loses a step. But, with that being said, I want him to sign, lol. NOW

And if he’s slowed and expensive last in the contract, they’ll just cut him. That’s the beauty of the NFL.

inconsistent???? Huh?
Jackson’s yards per game over the past two seasons is near the top of the league. People call Jackson inconsistent as if the other top 6-10 receivers get exactly 75 yards every game. But I don’t think that’s how it works for anyone, including Fitz, Wayne etc…
The typical top receiver will get 120 yards one week, 35 the next and 70 the week after that… that’s how it goes. See Fitz for instance… here’s his game logs from 2010.
http://www.nfl.com/player/larryfitzgerald/2506106/gamelogs
The receivers who put up an insane 1400+ yard season rarely come close the next year (see steve smith). Desean was on pace for nearly 1400 his second season but he missed 2 games. Also remember Desean’s rush yards (337 in 3 seasons) to not count towards his yardage but are just as valuable… he’s gotten a bunch of TD’s and first downs on end-arounds.
Oh and he returns punts too… quite well.
Desean’s week to week output will vary, especially since he’s a big play specialist… he could be open for a 70 yard TD but one missed block by Celek or an imperfect throw by Vick or a hold on Justice or Vick sees Maclin open first… etc… can be the difference between a 100 yard game and a 30 yard game.
I’m too lazy to do this myself… but I’d like to see Desean’s “inconsistency” be quantified… in other words, what’s the standard deviation of his yardage in the games he played the last two seasons (aside from the two he left early in)? And then compare this to other top receivers. I doubt there will be much difference.

I think what's gonna drive up the price
Isn’t just the fact of the impact he makes as a receiver, but the special teams impact as well. There’s no doubt in the world that Rosenhaus is going to bring up that punt return vs the Giants as much as he can and probably say “there’s no way you win that game if DeSean isn’t back there fielding that punt” or something of that variation. That’s what is gonna be the deciding factor.

I would have to say 4 years 35 million, 12 guaranteed. His speed isn’t going to last, and once that is gone, he’s basically useless.
Calvin Johnson is leagues better than him.. he shouldn’t even come close to that money.

I am with
WE and Riley, 6 yr 45 to 50 mil should be sufficent and make about $15 mil guranntee, be hapopy and play on
Well....
Funny story. I actually made a fan post on this a few months back.
I put the big name receivers who got extensions in 2010 together and two players who I feel have similar career trajectory at the time of extension or signing of a new contract. Brandon Marshall and Andre Johnson are going to get more than DeSean got and you can see why, they were better receivers. At the time of the contract signing I feel like Anquan Boldin, Greg Jennings and Roddy White all have similar enough numbers to DeSean to guess that his contract will be somewhere in the ball park, but two things threw a wrench into this. The first wrench thrown into the gears was DeSean Jackson as a football player rather than just as a receiver, as an all purpose football player he has about 500 yards more than the next closest receiver and his TD production when you factor in rushes and returns matches up with the TD production of Brandon Marshall and Andre Johnson. What, or I should say who, else threw a wrench into things? Jerry Jones. That monster contract he gave Miles Austin after one year of production really drove DeSean’s price up IMO. DeSean is going to look at Miles Austin’s contract, see a guy who has one year of production, was older than him and got a contract comparable to ones that Andre Johnson and Brandon Marshall received. DeSean out produced Miles by a landslide when you look at their numbers at the time they were seeking extensions.
If you figure thatDeSean’s contract will be similar to recent extensions of top receivers the figures of the deal would average out to be: 5-6 years, about 45 million dollars with about 18-21 million guaranteed.
After seeing the contracts that Holmes (5 years, 50 million, 26 guaranteed) and Rice (5 years, 41 million, 18 guaranteed) got, I think that I’m still right on track to be right.

Just saying, if Andre johnson is only making 10.5 million a year after his bonus, we need to temper what the Eagles will give DeSean. I’d be ok with 5 years, 45 million with 12 million guaranteed. Anymore, we need to start seeing consistent 1300 receiving yd double digit receiving TD years.

Desean's contract.... Revis' contract?
I guess I’ve got this idea in my head that we’d be better off structuring Desean’s contract similar to the way the NYJ set up Revis’. A large up front bonus to basically reward him for way out performing his rookie contract and reasonable yearly salaries for the term of the deal.
Revis’ contract: 4 years, 46 million with 32 guaranteed
2010: $7.5 million base salary, no signing bonus
2011: $18 million option bonus (due on the first day of the first league year after 2010, accounting for the chance of a lockout), $7 million base salary
2012: $7.5 million base salary (guaranteed for injury)
2013: $6 million base salary (guaranteed for skill)
I’m not saying that Desean should make Revis money, or get the crazy guaranteed money that Revis is getting, but the model of the contract seems like a good one, especially considering the Eagles’ cap space this year. And that d-jackfan10’s suggestion of
5-6 years, about 45 million dollars with about 18-21 million guaranteedwould be a reasonable one.
"On the flip side, though, Bleeding Green Nation cites a PFF study that says Jackson dropped the highest percentage of catchable passes (19.67 percent) of any receiver in the league last year. I think he also dropped that punt at the end of the last Giants game. But then he picked it back up."
Preferably 6 years if this were the case.

Desean holding out makes no sense
I just heard on NFLN that for every day he skips camp he loses 30k. Plus, if he doesn’t report to camp by the eighth, this next year won’t count towards getting to free agency. He’d have to stay another year her at the same pay rate under the new CBA. He’s already lost 60k and stands only to make 565,00 this year; holding out could lose him a good chunk of his salary.
