Caplan: Eagles In Pursuit Of LB Stephen Tulloch
Adam Caplan is reporting that the Eagles and Lions are in pursuit of Titans' free agent LB Stephen Tulloch. The middle linebacker has ties to both teams with former Titans assistants Jim Schwartz and Jim Washburn. The 5-11, 240 pound 26-year old had a bit of a breakout last year finishing second in the NFL with 160 tackles.
He does fit the mold of an Eagles target quite well. A younger player just entering his prime who has established himself as a standout starter. On the other hand, the Eagles targeting one of the top linebackers on the market? That's not something we ever get to say. Certainly adding the productive and durable Tulloch to the center of the defense would be an upgrade over Stewart Bradley and add a veteran presence to a young LB corps.
Tulloch is mulling his offers as we speak, tweeting this morning, "Decisions,Decisions,Decisions....Feels like being drafted all over again..."
The Lions have reportedly made Tulloch their top free agent priority and they have similar cap space to the Eagles. Their initial offer included over $10 mil in guaranteed money, so at this point they probably have to be considered the favorite.

Caplan just tweeted
I’m not a betting man, but wouldn’t be surprised if the Lions win the bidding on Tulloch. I’ll leave it at that.
I think that's part of the reason the Eagles haven't done much in FA so far..
Some of these contracts are flat out ridiculous, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tulloch got wayyyy more cash from the Lions than he really should.
I’m sure the Eagles are very interested in a lot of players, they’re just probably not willing to spend the type of money that other teams are, considering the fact that they still need to pay Vick and DJ.
Caplan just tweeted
NFP reported Tulloch has a deal on the table for $10 guaranteed. I’m hearing the APY on that offer is really significant. Could be upwards of $6 mill per.

160 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 6 Passes defended
I’ll take that undersized.
"truTV is like BET for white folks." - Chuck
His # of passes defended concerns me:
Stewart Bradley, Philadelphia Eagles
2010 Stats: 60 Tackles, 49 Solo, 1 Sack, 6 Passes Defended, 1 INT
Tackling upgrade, but isn’t Passes to TE’s our weakness that we’re trying to improve with MLB position?
Tackles
..are such an overrated stat. Washburn’s DL in Tennessee just charged upfield to stop the pass, meaning the MLB had a lot more responsibility (and opportunity) to rack up tackles on running backs. Also, lots of tackles can mean 1) the D is on the field a lot b/c they can’t force 3 and outs or turnovers and 2) the D lets a lot of plays develop and succeed before stopping them (as opposed to getting sacks, pass break-ups, etc).

i would agree
but i just think of watching him sulk on the bench when Kerry Collins replaced him. The guy just looked like he had no interest in the team. I want to cheer for him, but I just cant make up my mind if he is too much of a head case.
Pressure
VY has always had a hard time when pressured….especially after since his idol passed away.
Coming here as a back up, he could really learn and thrive with Vick, Marty and Andy. Those guys take good care of their QBs. Plus, say Vick only has 1-2 years left….. VY could stil have 3-4 in the tank….. Its almost a no brainer… He fits this style of offense

I would actually be excited for our LBs instead of anxious. If we get Tulloch, DRC +1/2 and VY I’d be happy with the offseason. Babin doesn’t excite me, but if he’s cheap, sure. If we can somehow land a motivated Fat Al, that would just be gravy.
However, I doubt we land Tulloch. It sounds like Detroit is going full-court press on him and I doubt the Eagles get into a bidding war over him.

and thats the thing with Desean
I love him on this team, they really need him, but:
1) – He’s a one trick pony
2) – He’s way undersized for a WR (in todays world)
and
3) – He is one hit away from being done (although that could be said of anybody in this league. But with his concussion history, and his size…..he is in the “higher risk” column

What are you getting at?
All top receivers have good to great numbers. Even better than these ones. Even then, numbers don’t always tell you the whole story. When you invest in something you look at its history, the risk involved, the durability, the diversity and the potentiality. All those intangibles matter….
FLY #7 FLY !!!
In MUDD I trust !!!
Of course you look at those things.
His history says he deserves to be payed much more than the almost minimum he stands to make this year.
His durability is good – 3 games missed in 3 years.
His diversity is better than average – deep threat, able to turn a 10 yd out into an 88 yd TD vs division foe ( having some fun there ), end arounds ( no shit, he’s been successful ), killer on Punt Returns.
Potentiality? – There is no real need to improve on his part beyond just getting better at what he does. It’s up to the OC to use him better, if anything. If by potentiality you are intimating that he could get injured, I would say it’s a piss poor team that is afraid to pay a small player for that reason.
You left out "impact on the fan excitement/ league “buzz” factor. It is a business, and having a player who, many times every week is gushed about on national TV and radio as the most dangerous player in the league ( or something like that )is worth money to the franchise, now and down the road. It is also just something to feel proud of on the part of the FO. “We drafted DeSean Jackson and you didn’t”.
"Even those invested in the idea that the journey is the destination may feel they've taken a train to nowhere." - Terry Lawson
While I do agree that Desean is not a ‘complete’ WR in the mold of Fitz or Megatron, he is more than a one trick pony. He is a bona fide game changer and other than arguably Chris Johnson, he is the most dangerous player in the NFL with the ball in space. I think he deserves something around 35-40 million over 5 years, with half of it guaranteed up front. For what he offers, I think that is a fair deal. However, I think Rosencock will not take that and there is a high probability that this will turn ugly.
Unlike Fitz, AJ and CJ, this is likely Desean’s one shot at a deal like this, as when he eventually loses a 1/2 step, the impact on his game will be far greater than when the aforementioned players lose a 1/2 step. While he is certainly a game changer now, by far his greatest asset is his speed and when he begins to lose even a bit of that speed, his production will come way down. Players like the 6’3" 220 Fitzgerald can easier compensate and adapt, extending their longevity and increasing the likelihood that they will get a t least one more payday when they are in their early thirties.

Thats the thing dude…he is not a RB. He has speed, thats about it. He doesnt have great hands. He is not even close to being physical. He’s not tall. He really his limited in his skill set. Not the skills he does possess are unreal, but he is kind of a one trick pony

I am just trying to make the point that he is not a "one trick pony’, at least not in the traditional sense of the term. Many players have exceptional speed, but to be able to transfer that speed to the gridiron is another thing entirely.
Since at the end of the day we both want Desean as an Eagle, what do you think is a fair payday for him?
by captain nodar on Jul 27, 2011 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Well im not into getting into numbers. My whole arguments to this convo was that I could see why the FO wouldnt be giving him top WR#, just based on them, a business, valuing him, an asset.
I think he should get top 10, top 15 WR $$, but he’s not in the top 5 …just from a future value perspective

What was your argument?
That we should not pay him???

1) His “one trick” would be that he is the most serious threat in the NFL to score a TD whenever he gets the ball in his hands.
2) He’s also way fast for a WR ( in todays world ).
3) He is more at risk than the average WR to suffer a concussion because of his lack of mass.

We'll see.

A: They are equally ineffective in the red zone.

Ugh if we only just kept him when we had him. Im still skeptical on this. Id rather have Ray Edwards because he is atleast huge at 6’5" 280lbs. I wanted to see what washburn could have done with Edwards.

Lions fan here
Thanks for all the love you’re showing the Lions D-line, but its not THAT good. I would still take the Giant line over our right now. Don’t know about two years from now.
By the way, its not Suh+ Fairley…its Suh + Corey Williams. Nick Fairley will have to fight for the 3rd DT spot as it is right now. Sammie Hill, our 3rd stringer, is really good too. Both Sammie’s and Corey’s contracts end after this year, which is why we got fairley

The Eagles are gonna have to overpay some of these guys at some point otherwise they’ll be outbid most of the times…. I guess they don’t want him bad enough.
If your team HAS to spend 30, 40, 50M just to get to the floor, these deals are going to be absurd at the margins. If you really want a guy, and you need to spend money? He’s getting the money. If we’re looking to keep contracts smart, we won’t be able to get many top shelf guys. Ray Edwards was saying the other day he’s going to the highest bidder
Unless they want to be like the Patriots and just mostly build from the draft and keep turning over the roster, which is a really good idea in terms of saving money. And the Eagles are getting better at drafting…

Tulloch or Ruud?
Nice to see the Eagles targeting a young talented LB that isn’t over the hill, just out of curiosity would you rather sign Tulloch or Ruud?

I would say Tulloch as well, I just thought I’d throw Ruud’s name out there since he’s a cover 2 guy and Castillo is looking to go with a 2 deep scheme.

Tulloch's a monster.. I don't know how I didn't realize he was an FA..
with our DL being how they’re going to be, Tolloch has played where he has to shed OLman… Therefore he’s a perfect fit.

Lions signed a LB...
http://twitter.com/#!/AdamSchefter/status/96423129341112320 FA LB Justin Durant…
This a sign we won the Tulloch sweepstakes?
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Not necessarily
Durant can play inside and outside and the Lions have a need for both.
