Eagles Players And Management React To Lockout Ending
The NFL lockout is finally over after 132 days and Eagles players and management are excited. After the jump, we'll have the full comments released by Jeff Lurie, Andy Reid and Joe Banner then we'll take a sampling of the twitter reaction from some notable Eagles. Let's start with Big Red, who puts it pretty simply.
Coach Andy Reid:
"I'm happy that the NFL and its players can get back doing what they love to do. The coaches can get back to coaching. Players can get back to playing and we're all pleased about that.
"As far as our team, we look forward to reconvening in the near future and we are looking forward to holding training camp once again on the campus of Lehigh University. We understand that we have a lot of work ahead of us in order to get ready for the season opener at St. Louis and I'm excited to get started on that as soon as we can."
Jeff Lurie:
"I'm glad we were able to reach this agreement without interrupting the season for our fans. In the end, both sides gave enough to get the deal done, and we can all go back to work feeling good about what was accomplished. A 10-year contract is unprecedented in professional sports. By the time this contract ends, the NFL and its player will have been able to play 33 uninterrupted seasons of football.
"The contract protects and strengthens the elements that have driven the popularity of the NFL to unprecedented heights. The continued equalization of player spending guarantees every market, large and small, an equal chance of competitive success. The draft and free agency remain important parts of the game. And there's recognition of the importance of former players, who gave so much to the game, and who deserve our increased support.
"I want to thank our fans for their patience. Now we can get back to football - and that's what we are all really looking forward to."
Team president Joe Banner:
"Like our fans, we've been waiting for this situation to end since the day it started. Now the challenge is getting back to the games with as little disruption as possible.
"Even during the lockout, we kept working through the summer knowing we had to be ready for this moment - to go from zero to 100 mph overnight. That includes giving our fans a worthwhile preseason experience. So we kept working at it, even when we weren't sure we would have time for training camp at all. We owe thanks to many people at Lehigh and on our Eagles staff for making that possible.
"Now we have to be quick learners, and quick to act. We're studying the new contract hard so we can make good football decisions fast. We want to be on top of the nuances of this new agreement so we can help our ballclub compete."
Congrats to both parties on settling the lockout. Intelligent men always find ways to win!!!
Ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok ok!! FOOTBALL IS BAC LET'S GET IT!! YA HEARD MEEEEH!!
So happy lockout is officially over and we can start this road to the ship!! #flyeaglesfly
I know it's been a tough process for everyone, but I know that once the NFL is back in action life will go back to what we know it as.

I wonder if, assuming he can’t p,ay football again, if he’ll go into the clergy. He is ordained after all. I’d listen to a sermon from Leonard Weaver.

I hope he returns
He will prolly be a shadow of his former self but you never know.

You know..
If anybody were to return from a torn ACL as bad as his was, which also had serious nerve damage.. it’d be Weaver.
Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

I love the back to back comments of Vick and Jackson. Vick talks of the intelligent men getting things done, and then DJax sounds all young, and well, unintelligent.
Love him, but thats funny.

It's crazy with the lost of Akers and mikell, the average age of the eagles just got younger, not to many players over 30
But damn rocca is extremely old

The owners kicked the players’ asses and made them like it.

Under the old agreement
players got 60% of the revenue after the owners took $1 Billion each year. They’re talking about over the next 10 yeard having about 150 Billion in total revenue. The onwers old share would have been:
10 BB off the top
56 Billion after that
The Players would have shared the 84 billion. Now the players get 47 % of the revenue (I think this is finalized). That’s 70 Billion. The owners increased their share by 14 Billion. That’s almost $500,000,000 per team All the rest is just window dressing.

But the owners were the ones locking the players out. So comparing this deal to that is a little unfair. We don’t exactly know what the owners proposed….so this has to be some kind of compromise.
The players weren’t getting that same deal…..

But that share is only what sets the cap. Under the old deal, teams could spend much less than they can now.
This new deal lowers the ceiling for the players, but it also raises the floor.

Exactly
Plus the players warded off the 18-game season, got a gang of money for pensions and retired players, got free agency back down to four years, etc.
I don’t think they did too bad for themselves. The 95% salary floor is a big win against Ralph Wilson, Brown, Weaver, etc.

The new deal has guaranteed money for the players
The last contract had a higher ceiling, but that means nothing.
Why do people have difficulty grasping that?
The amount of money which will actually be spent by the teams is much less in the new deal than the old. Once concession was raising the floor, but that’s just nickles and dimes compared with lowering the ceiling, something to give the union so they can say they won something.
The 18 game season was never a serious proposal, it was just something to conceed when the two sides went to the barganing table.
The owners went into this with one agenda: lower the cap. Everything they conceeded didn’t matter to them. All the owners just increased the value of their franchises by about a billion dollars (no exaggeration).
Note I don’t really care who won this, I just am amused about the spin, saying this was a win-win. The owners won, the players were completely outmanuvered from day 1.
