Kevin Kolb Envisions Himself A Cardinal, Ken Whisenhunt "Excited" To Get A QB

Kevin Kolb was a guest of the Dan Patrick show today, which happened to be hosted by Howard Eskin, and he was asked about the recent rumors about a possible trade to the Arizona Cardinals. It sounds like Kolb is ready to go.

"I hope," Kolb said. "Arizona would be a great place. I've obviously envisioned myself there."

This isn't the first time this offseason he's expressed an interest in the Cardinals. Back when Larry Fitzgerald kind of endorsed Kolb as the teams' next QB, Kolb said he was flattered and hoped the Cardinals would be in the mix if the Eagles decided to trade him.

Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt also did a radio spot recently (with the same guy who reported Kolb for DRC rumor) and while he didn't address the Kolb rumors, he did say he was excited to get a QB.

"Absolutely. I don't know if anxious is the right word. I'm excited to do that, to get the opportunity. I feel confident that when we get the opportunity to do that we're gonna have success and we're gonna be excited about that just because I think we present a good opportunity for a quarterback. With our receivers and some of the things that we do. The one thing as a coach you want to have your team. You want to know what your team looks like, you want to know what challenges you face with that specific team going in and we're not there yet. We have a number of areas that we would like to address. We'd like to be aggressive and improve our football team and that's what we're going to do. You would certainly like for that to be happening right now because you're just excited about wanting to get started and wanting to get everyone up to speed."

So this tells us a couple things. For one, the Cardinals are absolutely 100% in the market for a QB and clearly don't see any of their in house guys as realistic options. Second, if he's "excited" and plans to be "aggressive" wouldn't you think that rules out guys like Marc Bulger and other re-treads? It sounds to me like Whisenhunt is going all out to find a franchise QB. And unless he thinks Kyle Orton is going to turn into a franchise QB on his third try, there's really only one guy on the market with that kind of potential...

It would have been hilarious if when asked about the Cardinals rumors Kolb straight up said “No, not interested”, or something along those lines.

McNabb

I still think the Cardinals should have made a move for #5 last year. It would have ended up much better for both parties (the Eagles did alright though)

With all this talk about the Cardinals

I’d be extremely surprised if Kolb were to go somewhere else, but there is always that possibility.

If the seahawks were serious about that 1st and 3rd, and the Cards to counter offer, Kolb will be a Seahawk.

I think that the Cards are in more dire need for a QB. I think the Cards take the leap to get Kolb. they will either offer DRC and a conditional pick, or a first and third or fourth.

Question

under these hypothetical timelines we keep hearing, trades would be allowed whenever the league year officially starts, right (around the 28th)? So that’s AFTER the three day signing period that teams have for their own FAs?

What’s the over/under for when a deal gets done once trades are allowed? 48 hours? Less?

by igglemethis on Jul 19, 2011 11:50 AM EDT reply actions

I don’t know for sure, but the logical date would be the same time free agency starts.

Now that...
Cardinals fans literally sucking cock to get Leinart back.

…is one really frightening mental image. That’s gonna leave a mark. Thanks for that.

Seriously

How can you possibly think Kolb will destroy us on another team? Michael Vick is an absolute game-changing stud – a top 5 QB in the league who can literally carry us on his back to the SB – so long as he stays healthy and all of that.
Plus, the Eagles have an incredible core of youth, talent, energy, etc.. We really only lack a solid 2nd CB. Maybe another LB and a DE will help as well. And we should address the QB of the future in one of the next 2 drafts.
I would be perfectly happy with a Kolb for DRC straight-up trade, despite some of the other comments I’ve been reading to the contrary.

Timeout

You honestly think that Kevin Kolb is worth less than Matt Leinart? Because thats what you’re implying by saying the fans would “suck cock” to get him back. I never said Kolb would bring the team back to what they were in 2009 by any stretch, nor did i say they would be a good team with him, because a quarterback can only do so much with the tools around him.

You guys can’t possibly be happy with a quarterback who can’t even play an entire season, can you? Where’s the security in that?

WADAC

Your argument that Vick will get injured is retarded. Not retarded because your wrong. But retarded because you for some reason believe that Kolb isn’t more of a risk for injury than Vick..

In other words.. If we traded Vick., I would be more afraid of Kolb getting injured.. Not to mention our deep threat is gone because Kolb can’t thow a ball over 40 yards in the air.
Bye Bye Desean going deep..

Would Matthews have caught Vick like that? Don’t the crippled animals in the wild die first?

First of all...

…my comment about Leinart and Kolb was more of an assertion rather than an implication. I think I was pretty clear.

Second, you might want to take a look at the post where Jimmy debunks the Vick as injury prone theme that the University of Houston boosters club has been harping on for the past few weeks. “You have to keep Kevin Kolb in case Vick gets hurt.” Do I have to keep my old house in case my new one burns down?

I think you're reading too much into this

It sounds like PR nonsense to me. The Cards could get Donovan McNabb, Kyle Orton, or Vince Young and spin it as an exciting option. Why? Because all of those players and Kolb are guaranteed to be better than Derek Anderson, Max Hall, and John Skelton.

Frankly, if I’m an Arizona fan, even someone like Brady Quinn or Jimmy Claussen would be a welcome change. That’s how bad it was last year.

Hmmmmmm

Can the Gms talk to each other and work out a deal in principle even though the lockout is in effect? That’s the vibe I’m getting here, but I kind of think this is more a general statement by Kolb in case he does end up in Zona. Who the heck knows where he’ll end up, many times trades never end up where everyone assumes they will. Even if there has been any behind the scenes agreements, the football FOs have zero reason and zero history of actually being truthful with the fans beforehand.

I’m gonna say the Bills might trade for KK, or maybe 49ers, just as likely as the Cards. What about the Dolphins or the Seahawks?

Cards or bust

I think we’ve had too long of an off-season to speculate on this topic. The only challenger to Cardinals is the Seahawks. I still believe that they are going to offer a DRC for Kolb straight-up trade, and I’ve thought that for a long time. I think it’s a great deal for the Eagles.

Eh Orton's probably a better value

Based on what he’ll cost and produce.

But it only takes one team to love Kolb for us to get a good deal. Two and we’ve got a bidding war.

Just get him far away from our starting spot

I dont care if mike vick goes down next yr and we have to go with kafka (or the vet we will sign once hewhoshallnotbenamed is gone) I would rather that and go get a qb in the draft or another method. Kolb looked good when desean broke big play: Chiefs and Saints 2 yrs ago, Falcons, and 49ers this yr. Well that 49ers game shady played out of his mind but Kolb never looked comfortable in the pocket and never looked comfortable out of the pocket, at least to me he seemed always to be in a uncoordinated rush. Look at the play that flashed #10’s career before our eyes in Atlanta… Kolb got him killed, he was being rushed and instead of evading the pressure he bails himself out and leads desean on a short crossing route and ran him into the zone cb waiting… terrible. GET’EM OUTTA HERE.. Kafka will be better

I don't care where Kolb goes.

As long as it’s not here. He may very well be a nice guy and all that, but he just isn’t cut out for the NFL.

I love the sound of all this

Whisenhunt’s hints, Kolb’s hints … and good for Kevin if he lands somewhere where he can be successful, but not hurt us all that much. I think the Cardinals can be a division winning team but not really a regular SB contender.

It won’t take much to be THAT division’s winning team, considering they didn’t even have a winning team last year.

I cant wait to go over to revenge of the birds the day we trade kolb to arizona. Just reading the things they said about the rumor of DRC for Kolb straight up is crazy. It is going to be hilarious to read their reactions when the eagles get a bounty for Kolb. I might actually find a new sig.
