The Linc - Jay Glazer Reports That CBA Deal Is Not As Close As It Appears

While saying he was optimistic because the two sides were continuing to negotiate, Smith painted a different picture than that of a collective bargaining agreement being reached as soon as this weekend.

NFLPA boss DeMaurice Smith to players: No agreement in near future - NFL News | FOX Sports on MSN
Jay Glazer has a lot of great info on some of the talks within the players and between the owners and players. DeMaurice Smith recently told a group of select players that a deal is not as close as news outlets have made it seem.

Michael Vick as a baseball player? | Eagletarian | 06/29/2011
If there was any doubt as to how highly Michael Vick's athletic ability is regarded, take a look at this week's Players Poll in Sports Illustrated. The question, asked of 269 major league baseball players, is which athlete in another sport would make the best baseball player. The top answer, with 16 percent of the vote, was Vick.

Could Michael Vick be the Oldest Eagle in 2011? — McNabb or Kolb | Philadelphia Eagles Blog
It’s easy to forget or to gloss over how young this Eagles team is. But there’s a fair chance that Michael Vick could be the oldest position player, if not oldest player on the whole team. Vick turned 31 earlier this month. That’s not particularly old for a quarterback. But there aren’t more than a handful of players on the Eagles roster right now who are older. In fact, there are only four.

JMac keeping busy during NFL lockout
At least one locally raised NFL player is keeping himself busy and productive during the lockout. The Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver, Kirkwood's Jeremy Maclin, has bought his mother, Cleo, a house in Brentwood, says his agent, John Caplin of CAA Football.

NFL lockout puts Eagles camp at Lehigh in doubt | 6abc.com
Mayor John Callahan says Eagles Camp pumps hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local economy. More than that, he says, you can't buy that kind of exposure. "Getting daily reports on Eagles training camp in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and all of the various media outlets that use Bethlehem as a byline is the kind of exposures that any community would love," said Mayor Callahan.

Meadowlands Close To Being Renamed | SportsBusiness Journal
MetLife is in advanced discussions with New Meadowlands Stadium to upgrade its corner sponsorship at the year-old facility to a full naming-rights deal. A source close to the deal described the negotiations as "very advanced, but not complete."

i heard it was starting to look bad over owners wanting RFA at 6 years and players at 4 years. dallas must have just realized there mistake with free and are trying to fix it. but seriously with only having 3-4 years as the average for a NFL player it just seems right to make it 4 years over 6.

by Rhayes on Jun 30, 2011 6:49 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with the players on this one.

Think about this. 18 out of High School….. + 4 years of college = 22 into the draft….. + 6 years until you his UFA (The big payday) = 28 What NFL team would want to sign a 28 YO anything to a big contract something along the 6 years 66 million dollars. He’ll be 34 going into the final year of his deal & everyone knows how players start the decline at 30.

I wouldn’t put too much stock in DE Smith’s comments. He has to say that. If he says “A deal is almost done,” he loses leverage in some of the final sticking points.

Well, to clarify, I’m saying it IS close to being done. I’m just saying it does no good for De Smith to say so.

^ this

advantages to de smith using the “we are no where close” line
- looks like a hero when deal magically gets done
- doesnt look like an ass if talks do break down
- doesnt have to worry about players going out and blowing the last of their savings bc they assume its almost over

advantages to de smith saying “we are almost there”
- {crickets}

I’m in the minority here, and I get that people (myself included) are turned off by his annoying and sometimes ridiculous rhetoric, but I actually thought he has done a phenomenal job for the players if reports of the likely final deal are accurate.

I agree.

Decertifying is a tactic that could have gone very wrong, yet it looks like Smith is on the verge of getting a good deal for the players and not missing a single snap of the 2011 season. If both of those things happen, then DeMaurice Smith has done his job perfectly.

And to be fair, the rhetoric coming from the owners’ side was equally ridiculous.

by laxer298 on Jun 30, 2011 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Yup. And as i have said on here before. DSmith will live and die by the results he gets here. If we miss games in 2011, he’s a sitting duck and public enemy 1B, with Goodell being 1A.

I've been saying, 4th of July weekend..

It’s as big of a PR hit as they can have.. Think about it, Friday they announce it’s almost complete, Saturday news breaks it’s been signed.. Sunday they announce details and say that Monday (the 4th) is when FA officially begins.

I would be shocked if the season started by thanksgiving honestly

the owners planned to hold out from the beginning otherwise they would have had serious talks a year ago. They are just now getting to the sticking points of the new CBA and that could and probably will get ugly again sooner or later.

So the most likely scenario will be the court will decide…in which both sides won’t like the final outcome which may turn out to be the best solution until these 8 yr olds decide to learn how to share all the marbles so that everyone gets to play when its their turn..IMO
