Chris Cooley Does A 180 On Donovan McNabb Trade

They were young, innocent and had their whole future ahead of them. (Photo by Win McNamee/Getty Images)

I'm sure many of you remember Chris Cooley's infamous quote when the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins last year. If you read the site with any regularity, you probably do considering how often Jimmy or I have reminded everyone about it...

"This is one of the top 10 biggest bonehead trades in the history of the NFL."

That wasn't all he said by the way. He also raved about quickly McNabb acclimated and how well he was fitting in.

"It’s been great from the minute he got there. It’s been fantastic. You wouldn’t know he hasn’t been our teammate for the last 10 years. He’s stepped right in as a leader, as a friend ... "

In reality, McNabb never acclimated to the system, didn't seem to have any authority on the team and things were decidedly not fantastic. Assuming he meant the trade was "boneheaded" from an Eagles perspective, it goes without saying that Cooley was pretty much 100% wrong. He finally admitted it on the Rich Eisen podcast this week.

"It's hard because you have to be honest and say 'this didn't work'. You're not lying when you say this didn't work for us and it's probably not going to continue in the future. So you're on a fine line because you're saying 'this guy's my friend' and in no way shape or form don't want to say he's not a good football player."

Sorry to pile on Skins fans, but Cooley's initial statement was just so arrogant, so grandiose and so epically wrong that we deserve to revel in the schadenfreude of his recent comments. I can only hope that one day someone directly asks him about his original reaction one day.

Actually, I probably could have done it, because he was sitting maybe 7 or 8 seats to my left at the draft... but I kinda felt like it would have been a dick move. And you all know how I like to keep it classy ;)

Sometimes you have to let your dick move out of the cage.

I always thought he was saying it was a top 10 bonehead moved by the skins. I never once though he meant it was a bonehead move by the eagles.

Yea jason, you do keep it pretty tasteful

Next years draft though. Take DickMuffin and Wild_Eagle with you. It would almost be like. Your the God Father. Sending your Hit men out to do your dirty work. Meanwhile, you look clean as a whistle.
Thats an interview i would pay money to read.

In fairness to Cooley

there is a strong likelihood that his initial reaction was simply wishful thinking and more reflected a refusal to call out the people signing his paycheck/denial about what an obviously bad move the McNabb trade was. I mean, we have to remember that Daniel Snyder is the type of person who fires a very popular radio broadcaster solely because he was too critical of a lousy, poorly coached team and attempts to prevent fans from bringing in signs pointing out how lousy the team – hence, you can’t expect a Washington player to call out ownership there.

While it was pretty clear from a fan’s pespective that this was Daniel Snyder’s latest fiasco, it may not have been clear for players – it may not have been clear by the games how as many of us said at the time getting McNabb did absolutely nothing to address the offensive issues in Washington – their o-line still stunk, they had an over-the-hill running back, and mediocre wideouts. And of course, when have you ever heard a player say “out team stinks, we are going to be lousy” at the start of the year.

I don’t think its really fair to go after Cooley for being wrong due to the factors I mentioned. McNabb to the Deadskins may have been a slow motion train wreck to the people on the outside, but you can’t expect a passenger on the train to see that the bridge is out 2 miles ahead as the engineer and conductor decide that the proper strategy is to incresae speed and jump over the river.

but whatever…

Anyway, now that Jason has brought this up, I have to change my quote… but isn’t it so ironic?

If the Eagles let you go........

….chances are that is it for you. Exceptions include Al Harris and Reggie White. But the list is long: D. Staley, T. Vincent, B. Taylor, C. Simon, L. Sheppard, T. Thomas, J. Runyan, etc.

by donniethelion on Jun 3, 2011 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Burgess and Dawkins ...

… their most famous misses, they wanted back, their offers just weren’t competitive enough. Reggie White = Norman Braman era, irrelevant here, everybody walked back then.

They let Al Harris go under Kevin Kolb circumstances, i.e. we know you’re a little better than a 3rd corner so go ahead and get a starting job somewhere. Same with Rod Hood.

There have really been few players, if any, that the Eagles thought were “done” only to be shown up by someone else in another city.

Michael Lewis is still in the league but not a Pro Bowler. Shawn Andrews = same. Mikell and Akers might have a few years left in them.

Dawkins fucking blew after that

We didnt miss on Dawkins, it was his time to go and then some. Its just that we never found a replacement.

I think he could've played strong safety

or a role with less coverage responsbility. I’m not going to go so far as to say he’s totally useless on the field, and I’m sure we agree about off.

That said, yeah, if we had drafted Nate Allen the year before and the whole Macho Harris thing never happened, then maybe it would’ve stung less.

Also Dawkins going into his 3rd year starting for the Broncos … Taylor and Duce and Hugh were out of football by then. It’s okay to call Dawk a miss in my book if we wanted him back and he plays 3 seasons or more somewhere else.

Sweet crow for Cooley.

Now all we need is for Wes Welker to eat his words about Asante Samuel and I can die a happy man.
