Wave goodbye, Michael. Photo via cdn.everyjoe.com
Ok, let's start this off with a disclaimer: The Eagles are not going to trade Michael Vick. I do not think that they should trade Michael Vick. This is idle speculation, just for fun... if you think the concept is stupid, I won't blame you. Just stop reading here, and move on to more serious Eagle discussions.
Now that that's out of the way, let's get down to business. I'm chomping at the bit waiting for free agency to start, and wish for the best for Kolb with his new team. There has been a TON of debate on what Kolb's value is, both on BGN and on sites for teams that might be interested (I swear, the Cardinals site has more references to Kolb than any player currently on their roster). But let's put that aside for now, and imagine that the front office pulls a fast one and trades Michael Vick instead (please see disclaimer above). What should they expect to get back?
First, let's discuss why they would ever do this... There isn't much of a history of teams trading star QBs; Montana and Favre were traded in the tail end of their carrers, but that's about it in recent memory (please point out if I'm missing something obvious). When he's at his best, Vick has looked like one of the top 5 QBs in the league. So, why trade him? First of all, we've only seen him play at this high of a level for one season (and not a full one at that). Reid has seen much more of him than we have, and if he feels that Vick won't be able to sustain it (due to age, injury, simple regression to the mean), it might make sense to move him when the price would be astronomical, especially with Kolb waiting in the wings. Secondly, (and not to rehash this topic again) Vick's not a perfect fit for Reid's scheme, and might be worth more to a team willing to completely build the offense around him. Finally, he's going to be asking for a LOT of money to stick around.
So, fine. Let's imagine a world where this happens. What compensation do we get? Think about it. And before you jump to the "not going to happen, he's worth too much" conclusion, remember that everyone has a price. As I said before, this kind of trade would basically be unprecedented, but I guess we can learn a little from the Montana trade (note: I'm not saying Vick is on Montana's level, but remember that Montana was 6 yrs older when he was traded) where the 49ers traded Montana, a player, and a third round pick for the 18th overall pick. We'd probably all agree that Vick's worth more than that, especially since Reid apparently was asking for two-first rounders for the unproven Kolb last year.
Ok, let's discuss... let's assume that Vick has not signed a new deal, but has told whatever team he's going to that he'd be willing to sign a long term deal. Remember that Vick will be expected to make the team in question substaintially better, so don't assume that picks will end up high picks. I can't think of a great way to put this in a poll, but I'll give it a shot... feel free to discuss specific trades in the comments. Is there a specific player would you trade Vick for?
