The Keep or Cut series...

There is some stuff that is good there.  But in the comments section, many posters are committing the uniquely Philadelphian sin of extremely overvaluing certain players....

Star-divide

Stewart Bradley is not going to be a contributing member of this team.  Let's stop the madness right now.  I know that we love him because of his lunchpail attitude and his "blue collar sensibility," but he's got the mobility of Bea Arthur.

Dimitri Patterson is garbage.  The fact that there was a "keep or cut" segment dedicated to this guy as if there were some debate about what to do him is odd.  He is worthless as a cornerback and keeping him because he's "not bad on special teams" is akin to keeping a violent abusive spouse around because "you like the way he makes grilled cheese sandwiches."

Chad Hall is not Danny Woodhead.  Chad Hall is not Wes Welker (despite his pigmentation).  Chad Hall is a slower Jeremy Bloom.  Sorry.

And Legend, you need to make a "keep or cut" about the most overrated Eagle on the squad, Broderick Bunkley.  He gets no pressure, makes no plays and occupies no blockers.  The rusted-out front end of a Buick Skylark would be a more effective defensive tackle.  At least it wouldn't get blown off the ball as much.

And don't get me started on that bullshit about Kevin Kolb as the next Tom Brady.  That fucking guy is Bobby Hoying.  At best.

Not so, Uda.

But in this case, I had to post separately. Our dear friend d-jackfan has lost his way and in his unholy love for Bunkley and Patterson has made crazed, delusional comments about how “vital” they are. This is not the truth, and I fear that he has succumbed to a horrible narcotics addiction. That is the only thing that can account for his insane rantings on their behalf.

The reason it could not be done over comments is the same reason the pastor’s sermon could not be delivered in recipes at the church bake sale. This shit is as real as it gets and it needs to be heard.

To be blunt, I think you are wrong in most of your assessments, but you have every right to express them.

Example: When it comes to Bradley, IMO his health is the biggest factor in whether or not he can be a contributing member of this team. IF he is fully recovered from both of his injuries AND IF he can play with the same reckless abandon that he played with in his first year of action, then he can be a contributing member of the defense and can contribute at an above average level. The question becomes, what is the probability that both IF’s come true? 80%? 65%? less than 50%? So, he has the potential, but it comes down to how likely you think he is of achieving it. AR and the FO know the answer to both questions better than anyone else, so if they don’t fight hard to keep him, it’s probably because they think he won’t return to his pre-ACL tear form.

by The Reddgie on Jun 23, 2011 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

That's fair.

I didn’t say anything about Jamal Jackson and Leonard Weaver in my post (both of whom suffered injuries at least as severe as Bradley’s) because in my opinion, both of them had proven themselves as legitimate NFL stars before their injuries and should at least be given the chance to play themselves back into shape (although with Weaver at least, that’s extremely doubtful). The difference with Bradley, as I see it, is that speed and mobility have NEVER been his strong points. He is essentially worthless in the cover game. And this injury is striking at his already weakest spot. I think he’s done.

This is fair analysis. I like this better than

he’s got the mobility of Bea Arthur

I personally would play the wait-and-see game with him but his spot is on thin ice and if a rookie/2nd year guy emerges during camp I think he will be shopped for a mid-round pick.

Personally I would take Chaney over Bradley at this point, I feel like last year he had been saying he had fully recovered from his knee injury, but I saw him get burned over the middle by tight ends relatively frequently. I would say I agree with EB’s analysis of Stu.

What I'm saying is..

Look at Bradley, he took over at SAM for the last 2 games and (I think) a playoff game his rookie year, played very well.. Anointed the next big thing.

Chaney, took over and played 3 games late in the year, played very well, now everybody’s all over him as the next big thing…

My point is that the inexperience and such a small sample size is a big issue, now I love Chaney, I feel he’s going to be very good, but you can’t just ignore the fact he’s only got like 2-3 games under his belt.

Weaver is toast. Which is ashame, but a reality.

And I would put Jamal at less than 50% likely to be our starting C, mostly because I have a hard time seeing him staying healthy from Day 1 of TC through the pre-season and all the way to game 16 and hopefully playoffs. I think McGlynn can improve on his performance last year, which was handicapped by not getting all the TC reps with the 1st team at C and last year was his first real season concentrating on being a C.

As for Bradley, I guess I am not as ready as you to give up on him yet.

by The Reddgie on Jun 23, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with you on Weaver

really sucks to see him go as we have all mentioned time and time again. But Jamal’s case is interesting, he came back from the ACL way sooner than predicted and had a freak injury week 1. It’s not like he re injured the knee. By this team, the knee should be 110% and rehab on the arm should be getting close to done I’m assuming? The biggest question at this point is what kind of shape is he in? If he’s stayed in shape and rehabbed properly, I don’t see how McGlynn beats him in TC. Yeah, he’s had 2 IR worthy injuries in 2 seasons, but I think he can come back.

Yeah the odds are against him

But it’s really up to him. If he’s been working out hard trying to get his knee 100%, then I can see him coming back. But if he’s slacking then he’s toast like you said. Jamaal’s a hard worker though so I"m still hoping for him.

by FlyEagles15 on Jun 25, 2011 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

My issue is that the reason people feel 100% a year-2 after an ACL tear is that they do play and test it,

it’s not so much the injury or it not being healed as it is that it feels different and the mental side of things is sometimes rough to overcome..

I personally don’t think Jamaal’s going to hold up how we need him too.. That and I personally see so much potential in McGlynn that I think it’d be dumb not to pencil him in as the starter.

*Rant below

I don’t think Jamaal should be “defending his starting position” he should be fighting to tear it away from McGlynn, McGlynn did well enough last season where it’s his job to lose.

Totally agree

Jamaal has to fight for his job back. Anyone who is expecting him to be starter without proving anything is delusional. At this point it is McGlynn’s job to lose. But the more competition the better, here’s to HOPING Jamaal can compete.

"Get 'Em"

by FlyEagles15 on Jun 26, 2011 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Exactly,

I merely hope Jamaal can compete, he’s old, he’s got a bad knee, he’s fucked up his triceps… Hasn’t played much in 2 years, hasn’t had an offseason with the teams physical therapists and trainers.

McGlynn hasn’t been snapping for a full year, he only played center last TC and Preseason when Cole got hurt, then took over game 1.. He did amazing for a guy who’s never played a down at center before last offseason, and if he can get that good that quickly imagine if we gave him time to grow..

I think things are against Jamaal, the good thing is there are so few decent centers out there a team may make an offer for a guy like Jamaal just in the hopes he’d be able to play.

I like fanposts to have substance. Call me an idealist.

Don’t we typically rag on fanposts with little substance (that aren’t meant to me discussion starters), whether we agree with them or not? I see this post as egotism. I hate that. These remarks could have all been made in a few easy comments and I wouldn’t have cared either way.

For the record, I think it’s fine to say what he wants to say, but a fanpost is not necessary for it unless he was going to provide insight and not “Bill SImmons as an insult comic” stuff. I’ll go to Crossing Broad if I want that.

This is funny. And pretty much right on point, FPs are better when chock full of supporting evidence.

PS – I like Kyle @ CB, but his schtick can get a little stale.

Definitely true... Except when EB posts

I can understand and respect your view, I just politely disagree with it in this instance.

I also prefer FPs to have substance (which is probably why I don’t publish more of my own FPs), and this one would have been helped with some evidence that support his strong opinions.

I don’t see the egotism, but maybe I am just missing it.

by The Reddgie on Jun 23, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough.

And by egotism I mean the urge to make some kind of bizarrely witty comment or statement hyperbole. It reached a fever pitch during the myriad McNabb/Kolb debates that happened last offseason – it got stale for me very, very quickly.

It's "Brodrick".

Keep that up, EB, and I’ll revoke your Team Erudition badge. Which means I’ll be alone, which means I’ll have to cry.

Do you really want to do that to me?

I agree on Patterson

I could have done a better job than he did against Britt. Patterson would have been better off just tackling him at the snap of the ball. Oh wait, he probably would have missed the tackle too.

I didn't remember which game Hobbs got hurt in

My bad on the mix up. That said, it doesn’t change the fact that Patterson is not a starting caliber CB.

“Not starting caliber” doesn’t mean we have to cut him. He’s a great STer and he had very good games at CB (it’s amazing how fast the bad performances can push those good ones away) and he would have been backing up the safety position last year if he hadn’t been needed at CB. No reason to cut him.

I don’t know that you could say that the overvaluing is exclusive to Philadelphia, but it certainly is something that you see here. There are players who I would normally criticize that I don’t criticize on BGN, because I don’t feel like entering a 5,000-word circular argument, which will have no outcome other than bad feelings.

Dammit, I read all the comments ...

… just to be sure I wasn’t duplicating, yet somehow missed this and did it anyway.

“the uniquely Philadelphian sin of extremely overvaluing certain players”

Fine with the rest of the post, but that is NOT uniquely Philadelphian.

If anything, we hate and/or cut emtional times guys more quickly than fans in other cities.

Fans elsewhere tend to be, well, fanboys.

Anyway, Byars, I agree that there’s some overvaluing going on here on BGN (I’m definitely a ‘benefit of the doubt’ dude) but it’s far from a Philly thing. I think that’s what makes debates on Philly teams more fruitful than a lot of others. We usually have a range of arguments that produces good back-and-forth, plus some irrational love and irrational hate.

Other places, like D.C. for example … it can be way too much love, not enough honesty.

Realistically — and I know I’m just nitpicking one line out of a post that was based on a different point — we are probably one of the more ready-to-criticize fanbases there are. Sometimes I think we turn on people too soon.

But even unabashed everyone-lovers like me still have no use for certain players (Hi Ernie Sims!). That’s just the Philly way.

who cares. But I am willing to bet on Kolbs success in this league. NOT Brady success. But he will be a winning top end guy. He has “IT”.
