Keep or Cut: Sav Rocca

In this edition of Keep or Cut we will discuss unrestricted free agent punter Sav Rocca. Rocca does not have practice squad eligibilty left

Why the Eagles should keep Rocca:

The 6'5 265lbs Australian has a big leg and has improved on his touchbacks and kicks inside the 20 every year he's been in the league.

Why the Eagles should cut Rocca:

He's 37 years old(I know it doesn't matter as much with kickers and punters) and when it gets cold he turns to complete poo, he'd be great for a dome team or for a team where it doesn't get cold.

My Vote:

Keep him. This was another tough one but since he's also the holder and we are in the lockout it might be smart to re-sign him for a 1 year deal. If the lockout didn't last so long I would say bring someone in to challenge him

We saw what a green punter could do in the Giants game. I know that it might not be the biggest deal in the world but still why risk it? Then agaon Sav had had some ehhhhh games

Keep him

With ackers most likely not returning to the eagles, sav should be kept to show henery how the eagles special teams work.

Henery was brought here to replace Akers not Sav

Henery's focusing only on 1 thing, that's kicking, Reids already said this.

He doesn’t get a whole lot distance, but does have the peculiar talent of killing his punts inside the 10. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him trotted out there in the pre-season to try this

henry can punt though

the only problem would be if he did and god forbid ever got hurt the team would regret letting sav go……. i like sav i think he is a good punter and he had gotten better with his inconsistancy

by Mike GinZ on Jun 24, 2011 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

He's not that good of a punter, he's good when you get him in range of dropping it in the 10 yardline..

but we need a guy who can truly change the field position.

He doesn't change the field position like you'd want from a punter, they used him more

to drop in inside the 10 than as a real punter..

Keep

Rocca’s not perfect, but I think he’s one of the league’s better punters, and age isn’t a big issue for kicking specialists. He wasn’t money every time, but you’re not likely to find a punter who is. He’s still very good, and the “competition” you’d be bringing in is probably a guy who’s every bit as inconsistent but without the massive leg power.

Using Alex Henery as a punter is a non-option from everything I’ve read. Could be a fear of relying too much on one guy to handle both roles, but I’m guessing he just isn’t that good of a punter.

Keep..

Rocca’s a good punter, a little inconsistent but he’s better than any other option out there.

but I’d like the Eagles continue to “challenge” him like they’ve done with Ken Parrish in the preseason/TC. I know it’s not much, but I still think it’s worth a try. I like Sav; he’s been a good holder + obviously he has decent punting skills. The only thing that seem to concern me is that his play always starts off great (in warm weather) and then declines as the season goes on (and it gets colder).

If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

by PhiladelphiaEagles on Jun 23, 2011 12:59 PM EDT reply actions

There’s always an extra punter in camp, but these “challengers” like Parrish are not going to be a threat to Rocca. If they look at undrafted rookies they could always find a gem, but it would have to be a remarkably talented young guy (or a solid veteran, but they won’t get that) to unseat Rocca as the punter.

Dont have much to say about this. He is a solid punter no reason to let him go.

This is a classic case of "well who you gonna replace him with?"

I vote keep, mostly because of lack of another option. I thought maybe when we brought Durant Brooks in or Ken Parrish maybe they’d win the job … and I wouldn’t be distraught if one did … but until then, gotta stay Savvy.
