Keep or Cut: Dimitri Patterson
In this edition of Keep or Cut we will discuss unrestricted free agent Dimitri Patterson. Patterson does not have practice squad eligibility.
Why the Eagles should keep Patterson:
The 5'10 200lbs player out of Tuskegee is a good tackler and special teams player. He also is a ok spot starter incase somebody were to get hurt but not somebody you want as a long term starter.
Why the Eagles should cut Patterson:
The reason why he's a good tackler is because it seems like he can never stop the other guy from catching the ball unless he gets an INT and other QBs pick on him staying away from Asante.
My Vote:
Cut him. This was a tough one because I like him on special teams and as a spot starter incase there's an injury(although I think that may go to Lindley next year anyways) but there might not be room for him with a new guy coming in and with Lindley, Marsh, and Hanson already here.

Keep.. Reasons
(1) Great special teams play
(2) Good depth, people hate on him but why not keep a guy who can go in and be effective for 1-2 games a season?
(3) I hate Hanson and would rather get a big name RCB to go opposite of Asante, then Lindley in the slot to gain experience and I’d feel more comfortable if our 4th CB could fill in at all 3 spots.
Defensive player of the year for 2011 is...

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

Hanson is waaaay better/useful than Patterson. Hanson can actually preforms against slot receivers. Patterson just gets burn by everyone that isn’t a possession receiver.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Hanson performs well at his Nickel role, but he’s even worse on the outside than Dimitri is. Patterson is also a better ST player (and possibly tackler) than Hanson.
If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

I agree. People forget that DPatt was a good gunner on STs, and he can tackle. He also isn’t that bad in the slot (I remember him having an interception or two in the preseason while playing there).
If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

Forget?
It’s like the only time Patterson ever gets mentioned anymore (aside from the need to replace him as a starter)

Cut him. He’s not the answer at RCB and we have younger players in Lindley and Marsh who is going to develop into something really good hopefully. He’s just unnessesary at this point.
Cut Him
Hanson is a top slot corner which IMO is more helpful than a very mediocre outside CB.

The Eagles should not cut Dimitri.
Everyone is overreacting to his awful performance from last year. He played well for a few weeks, and then got exposed. But how are people surprised that he’s not that good? He was UNDRAFTED, then signed to the Redskins practice squad, then didn’t really find a place on a team until he came to the Eagles as a ST player. My point here is that he doesn’t have a high pedigree at all, especially coming from a Div I-AA school. It seems like some people’s expectations of him are way higher than they should be. He’s clearly not the answer at RCB, yeah, but who ever said he was? (Besides Brian Baldinger).
We should keep Patterson as a ST player. He was a great gunner on punt coverage, and the dude is willing to tackle / tackles well.
If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

Very well said. Before his poor starts, he was an above-average reserve guy for this team. You noted all of the points I would have stated, though I wouldn’t be opposed if getting rid of Patterson means acquiring a top-flight RCB.

Oh, absolutely. If there’s no room for him, we can cut him, but if not, he should stay.

He only played well for 2-3 weeks. Then he entered a sharp downward spiral that included getting burned for him for 3 TDs (almost a 4th) against the Gigantes. That kind of trajectory is alarming. Not to mention he wasn’t even particualrly good in the slot – Joselio and Trevard were better.
And his ST production is replaceable. We have a crapton of young, hungry potential STers (Jarrett, Rolle, Cooper, Coleman, etc.) He was 6th among non-kickers in “ST points” so he wasn’t exemplary. And I don’t remember him making a whole lot of plays there anyway.
I understand he’s done well for an undrafted player but that’s irrelevant. Unless Lynn thinks he can turn him into a smarter physical guy a la Sheldon Brown, there’s just no reason to keep him over anyone we have currently have at CB.

How is it alarming when it’s a guy who had virtually no pedigree and was backing up a guy who wasn’t even that good of a starting CB in the first place (Ellis Hobbs)?
I think he is replaceable, yes. But I think there is a hysteria-based reaction of “OMFG THIS GUY SUXXX” which is unwarranted because he’s not as awful as people make him sound. That type of reaction is uneducated + silly.
Lastly, nice quote you have there in your signature.
If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

In terms of what to expect in the future, that path of results (two great games followed by a few bad ones) would seem to dictate a bad trend. I don’t know how much we can reasonably expect him to improve if he didn’t seem to make any kind of jump or adjustment as he kept playing, CB experience notwithstanding. (This is similar to how I feel about McGlynn.) And outside of the fourth quarter of the Titans game Hobbs was playing very well – his YPA was above average for CBs, and while he wasn’t “shutdown” per se he was still able to cover well. In short, even if people don’t think he was great, he was better than Dimitri.
I think he has potential in him yet if some team can harness his speed and hone his physicality, but it’s going to take a miracle for him to become anything than a special teamer/emergency CB option. I haven’t been able to talk to myself into how he can stay on the roster – we have enough players whose primary contributions are on STs.

You make a reasonable argument for cutting him, then, and I respect that. The only thing I can’t stand is the “omg he sucks CUT HIM NOOOWWWW”

Not much better than Dimitri,
Hobbs got raped by Britt for like 230 yards and 2 scores… Hobbs was constantly getting beat..
Dimitri came in and for a while looked soo much better than Hobbs.. It’s just a case of who looked bad last in your mind.

Well yes, but you’re counting that differently for both players. Hobbs’ only big transgressions are getting burned by Greg Jennings once and one awful, terrible quarter against Britt while he was playing hurt. Dimitri had multiple bad games, plain and simple.
Dimitri did play very well for two games but those don’t make up for his clunkers from then on. At least Hobbs’ awful play can be considered somewhat fluky.

It would be foolish to cut him. People jump straight to his bad performances and ignore the fact that there were games in which he practically shut down his side of the field. He’s also a sound tackler who fits in as safety depth and he’s one of our best special teamers. The guy can backup the CB and safety positions adequately and is great STer, so he should definitely get a spot on the team.

Agreed, DS10. I totally forgot that the Eagles were potentially listing him as a backup S since we were only going 3 deep at S (Mikell, Coleman, Allen).
A number of people are seriously overreacting to some of his worse moments last year.
If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

We don’t even need him on special teams. Colt Anderson was a beast as gunner.

Who is the other gunner?
You need 2, don’t you?
If the Eagles sign a legit RCB, then either Hanson or Patterson has to go. I would rather keep the more versatile Patterson.
"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"
Cooper is the other gunner.

I’m pretty sure he plays / has played on KO coverage. Also, if Cooper becomes more involved in the offense, they might not want to use him as gunner.

i cant see how....
at the moment there are more votes for cut, ok its obvious hes not starter material but the guys a solid back-up and can step in in a pinch if need be, also his play on special teams is valued, i think we keep him.
Colt Anderson.

Just to let you know we only need one good Gunner and Colt Anderson is that guy. Unless you see Patterson playing buster then no. We need bigger guys to play special teams.

I’ve already stated my views in other threads, but I think if any vet CBs are acquired (or Hobbs returns) Patterson should be let go, 100% without a doubt. If not, let Patterson and Marlin battle for the 10th DB spot.
If the Eagles are targeting a FA CB like I expect, Patterson is meat.

Isn't Patterson a free agent?
Perhaps it’s nitpicking, but it’s not really a keep or cut deal, is it? It’s an offer-him-a-small-contract-and-backup/STs role or don’t.
I wouldn’t have a problem with either, but there’s only one cornerback spot available if you consider Lindley/Marsh to be developmental draft picks who are here for cheap and basically have their roster spot guaranteed, and then Asante + FA.
So basically it comes down to Patterson making the team over Hanson or so impressing on STs or whatever that they keep six corners. Or come up with a phantom injury to redshirt Marsh.
