The Linc- Don't Bet On Nnamdi To The Eagles?
A Look At Eagles Storylines Heading Into The 2011-12 Season - SB Nation Philly
The NFL lockout is still in place, but there are quite a few storylines flowing about the Eagles...here's a look at some random topics relating to Philly's beloved football team.
NFL.com news: Respected veterans top list of NFL's best corners
4. Asante Samuel, Eagles (>): Samuel is an excellent zone corner who baits quarterbacks into throwing his way and makes them pay. His seven interceptions at 10.0 yards per return tell the story, even though he saw less than 40 passes come his way all season. It's difficult to deny his 36 interceptions over the last five seasons.
Gunn: Don't bet on Nnamdi coming to Philly
Based on talks with his sources, CSN's Derrick Gunn doesn't believe the Eagles will sign Asomugha. They're already paying millions to Asante Samuel and wouldn't allocate that much money to one position. Instead, they may bolster the defensive line.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Philly throw a ton of money at Doug Free. He’s a very pure tackle and has started at both RT and LT…. I’m not as down on Justice as it sounds but DEPTH win a Superbowl…. And the Cowboys can’t afford to see their best Offensive lineman go to a division rival.

I’m cool with the Eagles saying they want no part of Nnamdi, it makes sense. See what other teams are willing to spend and then out bid them, but if they really aren’t even considering him then that is just dumb. What he brings to the team would far out weight what Burress, Haynesworth and Bush would bring to the team, combined.

Philly has been known to play their hands close to their chest. That being said I don’t think they will get into a biding war with 2-3 other teams.

And they shouldn’t. But to almost act like they won’t even consider is crazy. Now, do I actually think that is what they will do? Probably not, so, I am not really sure what I am complaining about.

An upgrade at RT and it weakens a division rival? That’d be sweet. I doubt that’ll happen.

Weaken? Hell it would cripple the Cowboys for years….. 1 above average starter entering the prime of his career everyone else getting up in age and a tackle they reached on in the first round this year.

I think they will. Will Dallas throw a contract big enough to keep him from testing the market? They’d have to be idiots not too. I know it’s Dallas, and that last statement goes without saying, but the dude is the best they have.

I see...
I didn’t realize Dallas was so close to the cap. You’re right. They can’t afford to throw a big contract Free’s way. As far as the rookies go, if the new CBA contains a rookie wage scale, then that would help with their cap situation. Still probably not enough to allow them to sign Free.
by Jason-E on Jun 22, 2011 8:34 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Agree, but I think they’ll have to use this chance to cut Williams. I think his contract is pretty bad for what he does. That might give them just enough room to resign Free. But I’d be happy if they couldn’t, or they offered him a bad deal and he came to us all pissed off at Dallas.

If new rules in place
The Eagles would have to be looking at Nnamdi just because they have to spend 90% of cap. The other option is to get two middle tier CBs and pay them 85% of Samuels salary. Go out and get a LB, Free, Haynesworth and some other surprise guess not named Plax or Babin…
If Free becomes an Eagle I would call Championship from week 1. Think about this Line….
LT: Free
LG: Herramans
C: Jackson
RG: Watkins
RT: Peters
I put Peters at RT and Free at LT cause Peters is stronger, that is Vick’s blindside and, that’s your power running side.

I think that they tried to put Peters in a RT in practice last year but he couldn’t get the hang of it. So many years playing only on the left side will do that to you I suppose. For that reason I’d keep your lineup and just swap the tackles. Free has plenty of experience on the right and Peters would still be going against the best pass rushers each game (DEs and OLBs have the same problem Peters has with switching sides).
I agree with you that this would be a vastly improved line from last year and make our offence almost unstopable. Also this would piss off, and not to mention cripple, Dallas.
Now that I think about it, I want Free more than I want Nnamdi right now.
No way.
LT: Peters
LG: Herremans
C: McGlynn
RG: Watkins
RT: Free
Let’s face it, Free’s played RT most of his career, Peters has played LT all of his career. It’s easier for Free to transition back than for Peters to switch.. Also Herremans and Peters work so well together, remember when they paved the way for McCoy’s runs to burn out the clock against the Cowboys the first game?.. Point being Peters is a LT, no matter if our QB’s a lefty. Free would be a good choice to move to RT considering he’s only been a LT for 1 year.
Also I’m thinking McGlynn will be our starting center, I have 0 faith in Jamaal staying healthy and he’s about to the point where the Eagles let vet’s walk. Injury plagued the past 2 years and over 30? Yeah he’s gone.

McGlynn took advantage of his opportunity last year to show why he was behing Jackson on the depth chart. He is not awful, he is just meh. Shipley has a better chance at starting with Mudd as the new O-line coach.

Absolutely wrong bud.
While McGlynn was only average, I’d take average with a beefed up OL who can help him…
McGlynn’s first year ever snapping a ball, he learned how to snap late last offseason with his WIFE taking snaps from him, and went from never snapping to being an “average Center” in a little over 4 months. That’s amazing.
Also with Mudd’s scheme McGlynn fits it very well.. Tell me what does the zone blocking scheme like? If you said strong athletic OLman who can get to the second and 3rd level you’re 100% correct… Now tell me, last season which OLmen did you see getting to the 2nd and 3rd level to lay blocks for McCoy? If you said McGlynn and Herremans you’re completely correct.
Everybody thinks that Mudd’s going to be looking for a guy like Saturday in stature, he’s not.. McGlynn’s a nasty OLman and a center on the rise, I can see him being very good next season once he’s settled into the position.
Mark my words, McGlynn’s going to be our Center in 2011 and beyond.

I’m starting to get off the Asomogha train and get on the “trade Kolb and a 3rd for DRC and a 1st”. Instead of throwing money at Nnamdi, we can use it to get Free. Our O-Line would be the best in the East easily.

Are there any LB's worthy of pursuing in FA?
I really think that once we sure up our RCB position, LB is the next target of FA, not DL or OL. Let the new coaches do their thing.
Dont have faith in Bradley’s health, skeptical about Chaney yet, lost all confidence in Sims and Gaither, unsure about Fokou, Clayton, Jeanty, Hunt, and the rookies. Some real (healthy) talent would be nice. I see that as the weakest link after RCB.
Pretty much I think it's
McIntosh from Washington
Manny Lawson from the 49ers
Bradley from here
Barrett Ruud from Tampa
Paul Posluszny from Buffalo
James Anderson from Carolina
Thomas Davis from Carolina
Justin Durant from Jax
Kirk Morrison from Jax
Ben Leber from the Vikings
these are the guys off the top of my head, IDK if any of them have been franchised or whatever.

Bradley
Noy only is Bradley health a risk, but maybe not as much as some, this guy cannot stay with most of the tight Ends in this league. He gets abused by fast TE almost everyweek. He plays the run well and tackles well, and i love his intensity and passion but hes a liability against the pass.
We may have already done our LB shopping
We signed Jeanty before the Lockout began. He has starting experience and special teams experience, but best of all, as far as AR and the FO are concerned, he is a cheap LB. And we all know how “cheap” is AR and the FO’s most favorite flavor of LB. Also, we could possibly lose and/or not resign 4 vet LBs (Sims, Gaither, Jordan, Bradley), and I find it hard to believe that the new DC is going to go with mostly 1 & 2 year guys who have very little to no in game experience.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that Jeanty is going to be a monster. Or the next Trotter. Or even the next Dhani Jones. I have no idea about what he can possibly do in an Eagles uni. Hell, I’m not even sure if I am spelling his name right.
But I know he is cheap, has some experience, and we have a wide open race at every LB spot on the roster, including backups and ST spots. While unlikely, he could end up winning a starting spot.
I essentially say LB is a free for all at all 3 positions.

I can’t even think of a time when there was no clear cut starter at any of the LB spots.
So many questions:
Chaney should start, but will it be as the MIKE or the WILL?
Do we bring Bradley back, and if so, will it be as a MIKE or a SAM?
Fokou wants to start, can he make it a no-brainer for the coaches to put him at SAM?
Can any of the rookies come in and win a starting job?
Can Clayton take the next step and produce as a Nickel LB?
So instead of signing the best corner in the league, the Eagles would rather sign the biggest douche in the league. I think Gunn’s sources are high on marijuana or something.

What? I’m saying that when you choose not to address your weakest position in the 1st round when you easily could have, you’re pretty much forced to address it in free agency. We have plenty of cap room so “not allocating too much money to one position” is a pretty dumb principle to follow.

I’m not saying they shouldn’t allocate so much $ on one position. I’m just saying that Jimmy Smith wouldn’t have necessarily made the problem go away. He’s an unknown commodity whereas whatever FA CB we decide to get would be a known commodity. Wouldn’t getting a known player at your weakest position who is a solid player be the smarter play and worth the extra $?

I don't get it
I keep hearing that its a long shot for the Eagles to sign Nnamdi, but there never give any real reasons why. The reason that seems to be most unanimous is that Nnamdi will cost too much and other teams will offer more than us. My question is….what team?
Cowboys can’t sign him because they would have to clear a couple contracts to do so including Newman. The Texans have openly stated they won’t pursue NA. The Jets can’t since half of their starters are FA this offseason including David Harris, both Holmes and Edwards, Erik and Brad Smith, Pool along with many others. The Seahawks said they won’t. The Steelers have confirmed they won’t. The Lions said they might (but its the Lions). GB has confirmed they won’t (and why would they?), Washington might (but would NA really want to go to the FA deadzone?). The only team I could see possibly giving us trouble for Nnamdi really are the Ravens.

it’s not how much do we have to pay this guy or the next. It’s where do we spend the money to win. If we don’t give everything to Nnamdi it should be because another player will help us win more.
