Keep or Cut: Colt Anderson
I saw other NFC East blogs doing this so I thought it might be fun first up is Colt Anderson
Why the Eagles should keep Anderson:
The 5-10 198lbs former Montana Grizzlie is a special teams stud.
Why the Eagles should cut Anderson:
He is just a guy on defense. I wouldn't feel to comfortable if he were to be forced into action I'd be more comfortable with somebody like Jamar Adams if we had a massacre at the safety position but hopefully with Nate Allen & Marlin Jackson coming back that won't happen. I also don't where there is room for him. Allen, Jaiquawn Jarrett, Kurt Coleman are all locks, and I think Jackson will be the fourth safety if not Jackson then Adams.
My vote:
I think it's pretty obvious that I say cut him

Special teams is a highly underrated aspect in the NFL
I say we keep him. The guy’s a baller when it comes to S/T.

Completely agree. I say keep on him for special teams. He just causes havoc all the time.

While I say we should keep him...
…I think, due to numbers, he gets cut. Unless something happens with Marlin Jackson, which could be considered highly likely, he is behind Allen, Jarrett, Coleman, and Jackson on the depth chart. And that is AFTER getting rid of Mikell.
I-C-Y-U-H8-ME
I think the Eagles might list him as a CB
Instead of a Safety. I think he might have the ability to swing both ways. “No homo”
Yeah...
I really think he is just one of those special teams wizards that you keep around knowing that he will probably only play special teams. Kind of like how we kept Koy Detmer around just to hold the ball for Akers all those years. The thing is, I know he doesn’t have the measurables, but he looks like a PLAYER on tape. If we were pressed to use him at safety for some reason, I would be both bummed and eager at the same time.

Colt Anderson
Should not even be in this discussion. Colts an animal on special teams. This guy seemed to be around the ball every single play. Plus he was named the Eagles special teams captain. You just dont part ways with young talent like that.
Very underrated player in my eyes.
Over the past 3 years, Jackson tore both ACL’s and ruptured his right Achilles tendon. As much as any fan of football, I would like to see him come back , but that is a lot of repair on his legs. We as Eagles fans watched Buckhalter go through similar multiple leg injuries and he was able to comeback and produce so anything is possible.
Jackson has barely played over the past 3 years and I would imagine he would need a fair amount of time to shake off the rust. I would rather them groom a young guy at the 4th safety position with room to grow. Also we really need the backup safetys to be able to play teams, and I am guessing after all that surgery Jackson will not. If they truly feel the need to have a veteran there, then they should resign Q for 2-3 years, assuming he would accept the offer.
bah, posted b4 I could finish
My point was, I would rather see them keep Anderson over Jackson, as we know what we have with Colt, a special teams stud. And we all know too well what can happen when you have poor kick/punt coverage teams. At this point, after going under the knife so many times, Jackson is really an unknown and a large gamble.
by captain nodar on Jun 19, 2011 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions
He is an unknown...
…but he is NOT a large gamble. Think about it, we have addressed both safety positions with 2nd round picks in consecutive drafts. Allen looked great early on last year and it is not a large stretch to expect the same out of Jarrett if he starts early this season. However, our injury situations earned Coleman a ton of experience last year and if he were pressed into action, I would feel comfortable with him there…I just don’t think he is a long term starter. That puts him 4th on the list without even mentioning the possible resigning of Mikell.
At this point, he is a low-risk/mid-to-high reward guy. If he gets hurt or cant find the field this year, he won’t be here next year. If he does and doesn’t play like he used to, he won’t be here next year. If he is healthy and plays anywhere near his pre-injuries form, he could be a starter at strong safety or even at corner. We all know, when he is on the field and healthy, he is an impact player.
I-C-Y-U-H8-ME
Ok, good point, he is not really a large gamble. But, the fact remains, if the Eagles were forced to make a choice by tomorrow (06/20/2011) wherein they could keep either Anderson or Jackson, I would certainly they would choose Anderson.

I’d like to give him a few more years and see what he has. He might surprise us.

And we have no idea that Marlin will play safety well. The reports (scant as they were) from minicamp last summer said he looked stiff in his backpedal and was a half-step slower than the other safeties there. This was before he hurt himself.
His prospects are more dismal.

A hypothetical situation that you’re being intentionally vague about. So what if he’s only here to be an STer? He’s been very good at it and there’s reason to expect the same. Who are you going to replace him with right now that will immediately contribute as much at a bargain cost?
I don’t recall Ike Reese playing a lot of defensive snaps (correct me if I’m wrong), but he was a tremendous player on ST and made the Pro Bowl for it. Quintin Mikell really only stayed on the Eagles his first year and a half because of his skill on ST. Snagging a great gunner from the bargain bin is invaluable, and someone like Colt has a whole lot more room to grow than Marlin (since this is the alternative that has been presented).

You guys aren’t getting what I’m saying, in no way did I say special teams aren’t important. Of course they are, just not as important as offense and defense. And I said there’s no reason to keep a guy that is one-dimensional and is only good on special teams.
Last name Ever
First name Greatest
Koy Detmer.
One-dimensional? Check.
Only good on special teams? Check.
David Akers’ field goal percentage dropped 12% the year after we let Koy go. It took Akers three full seasons to adjust to a holder that holds the ball the traditional way.
We didn’t say that you said special teams aren’t important. What I am telling you is that special teams ARE just as important as offense and defense. Keeping the kickoff returner behind the 30 yard line is the equivalent of making them convert one more first down to score a TD or a field goal. How many times have you seen a gaff on punt return coverage that leads to a 30 yard return give a struggling offense just the boost it needs? How many times have you seen a great defense shut out a great offense and lose the game because of a kickoff return for a TD? I’ve seen it too much to discount special teams.
There are three facets that determine the outcome of a football game. And, to me, all three are equally important. Because not having any one of them puts too much pressure on the other two.
I-C-Y-U-H8-ME
Ike Reese too.

Colt Anderson has done more in an Eagles uniform than Marlin has. Colt Anderson is more likely to contribute in the future in an Eagles uniform than Marlin will. Colt Anderson currently has two fully functional knees.
Maybe he is JAG on defense. But he’s a very, very good special teamer, and quite frankly it seems to me like Marlin is JAG on defense as well.

Ludicrous.

Agree
The only scenario where I’d be okay letting him go is if Rolle, Mathews, et. al. turn out to be ST beasts and we just don’t have room for them all.
But honestly if Buckley somehow makes the team, Colt sticks, plus we add Rolle and Mathews to the mix … somebody’s gonna get fucked the fuck up next season. And I like when that somebody is on the other team.

If Rolle, Matthews, etc. start lighting it up on ST, then Buckley will be shown the door. I’m thinking that as long as Dion Lewis can find his way to Lehigh, and has a pulse, he will take Buckley’s spot.

I disagree.
Buckley’s a pretty good guy to have, I’ve actually wanted to see more of him I like his running style and the little he played last season he picked up some yards and ran tough..
I’m not saying make Buckley the primary backup, I’m not saying Lewis can’t beat him out, I’d just like to see Buckley be given a shot… I wouldn’t count him out at all.

I personally think we should keep him.
Reasons?..
(1) Mikel will be walking, I’ve accepted it. That leaves us with only Allen (who is coming off injury), Coleman and Jarrett..
(2) While Anderson won’t be a starter and won’t garner much, if any, playing time he’s valuable depth and a great special teams player, he came here about halfway through the season and really helped our special teams out immensely.
(3) He reminds me a lot of Mikel, he’s a guy who’s “just a special teams guy” but he works his ass of at it and obviously has goals of being an NFL safety, it’d be nice to see him turn into something.. And if he’s only half the player Mikel is at Safety then he’s nothing short of some good depth and great special teams play.
The only way I don’t see us keeping him is if somehow Marlin Jackson remains on the team.

Will hurt his value a little, he made so many tackles on kickoff last season but I think the ball is goin out the back of the endzone a lot more now, still think he is worth keepin though

I know Special Teams can impact the game(see here) I’m not ignoring that & some of you have brought up Mikell but like Djax said Mikell could actually play safety. Now maybe I haven’t given Anderson enough of a chance but if he we were to have injuries I would feel comfortable with someone else back there. Also something else I just thought of would he even be active on gameday if the 4 safety’s I said made it? Because Marlin can also play CB.
actually.
Mikell but like Djax said Mikell could actually play safety.
Nobody’s given Anderson the opportunity yet, and he actually did play vs the Cowboys and did a nice job… Mikel barely played safety until the year before he took over as the SS.

Yeah I don't see what's outrageous about this theory
or why people “know” he “sucks” at safety. If, like any other NFL prospect, he has a future as a position player, his value as a special teamer makes him worth even more.

This is what I'm saying lol,
to many people judge a man by his draft position.. What I find so eerie is this:
Mikell- 5-10, 200 lbs, ran a 4.58.. Wasn’t at the NFL combine. He was a special teams ace until 2007 when he finally cracked the starting lineup. But here’s a scouting report done on him
Mikell is an undersized but aggressive strong safety. He is definitely on the small side but has a good frame and packs a pop. He was a four-year starter, so experience is not an issue. He has a good feel for the position and understands his assignments. He takes good angles to the ball carrier and will deliver a blow when he arrives. He has decent speed and can make plays from sideline-to-sideline. He is a sure tackler most of the time. While he is a force against the run, his size will hurt him more in the NFL than it did at Boise State. He is below average in coverage and can really only play zone. Mikell doesn’t have the hip movement or speed to play man-to-man.
Now for Colt Anderson:
Colt is 5-10, 200lbs, ran a 4.53, ran Combine tests (don’t think he attended though).. He was a special teams ace this season also.. Here’s a scouting report on Colt
They’re both pretty similar if you ask me.

Yeah, they read really similar
I mean maybe Colt as a safety will never be a Mikell type, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility to consider he might make the team out of camp based purely on his ability as a safety, with his ST value being the clincher over a similar fringe player.
The funny thing about offseasons is we think we know it all … then all kinds of craziness ensues when players actually start playing.

the chances of Marlin remaining healthy through a 16+ game season are astronomical at this point, the chances of him being even close to as good as he was before the 3 missed years are again astronomical…
To many if’s.. the only IF to Colt is whether he’s capable of filling that 4th safety spot..
We’re talking about a 4th safety, Marlin’s not going to play FS and CB the Eagles never work that way he’ll be one or the other and my money right now is that they’ll want him at RCB competing there..
