Why the Eagles should of drafted Earl Thomas

This title was supose to be about Earl Thomas and / or Eric Berry but when the Chiefs took him there was no way of the eagles getting him. So I'm sitting there like ok well earl thomas is still there surely we will grab him. I watch other great guys that could of also helped us like Joe Haden, Rolando McClain, but I wanted Earl Thomas something about his play making ability that just was awesome. Well the eagles were picking 13th they kept showing earl thomas on the screen. I was pumped I was ready to order that jersey the minute they made the announcement. Then I heard the name Brandon Graham I was like man seattle picked him quick, but I was entirely wrong. Ever since that day I only wonder what could of been. Yes I know the Eagles got a hold of Nate Allen but we could of used that pick on someone else had we already gotten Earl Thomas. Lets compare stats.

Nate Allen 48 tkls 2 interceptions, 2 sacks

Earl Thomas 75 tkls, 5 interceptions 1 deftd

Yes they both played solid. I have nothing against Nate Allen. But you ask anyone out there Earl Thomas is the better player now had the eagles taken Earl Thomas with the 13th pick who could they of grabbed with the pick they used on Allen.

TJ Ward

Sergio Kindle

Daryl Washington

Taylor Mays

Carlos Dunlap

Brandon Spikes

Just to name a few.

I just dont think DE was a position we needed to address with the 13th pick we could of had some great guys but we went out and got brandon Graham and he barely helped us. Hopefully he pans out in the end but we will never know what could of been.

You’re comparing stats of guy who didn’t play the same amount of games.

And we’re talking one year here…

If Brandon Graham and Earl Thomas both turn out to be good players, then hands down the Eagles made the right pick because defensive end is a more valuable position than safety.

Nate Allen had 3 picks, not 2, in 13 games……..

Theyre both good (Allen & Thomas)

and both have a great upside to them so, I dunno…..

I really wanted them to draft Thomas as well, but they have enough young talent back there right now. I dont think it would make much of a difference. You could play the woulda shoulda coulda game at anytime, doesnt mean anything…

No Doubt

I assume the same record at the end of the year with either guy back there? I like Allen and think it worked out just dandy

by scolabird on Jun 1, 2011 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

I wanted Earl as well as was so pissed when they picked Graham i thought he was a sure bust but he actually did fairly well and allen was solid but overall i hold back judgment for another few years see who pans out and who doesn’t

Earl Thomas was also worse than nearly every other safety in the NFL in coverage. He got burned soooo much. Allen was more effective on the blitz, better in run defense and adequate in coverage.

Brandon Graham has all the potential to be a stud

while Thomas can be solid but never great or a game changer. I like you was sitting there looking at his picture, but I was screaming through the TV, No! Don’t take him! When I instead heard the name Brandon Graham, it was the first time I jumped for joy at the Eagles first pick in awhile. His learning curve was stumped a little last year because of the injury, and this lockout isn’t helping it any, but Graham will be a beast when it is all said and done and people will forget that Earl Thomas was on the board at that point.

all of the potential. Let’sb be honest and reduce that potential by 35% bc of his injury.

Well said.

Not to mention Thomas hasn’t proven himself to be waaay better than Allen, let alone better at all.

by NOLACuse on Jun 1, 2011 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Allen & Graham

Graham was not used the way he could or should have been- Let the dude rush, he dropped in coverage often also and never got settled in and as for Allen he shared time with other people often and I bet minutes per game was way up with Thomas compared to Allen, if the stat was out there. Seattles Defense was often on the field. DONT ALWAYS LOOK AT THE STATS

by DcEagles29 on Jun 1, 2011 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point

Straight stats are definitely not the tell all. This would not be so bad if more research was done.

I'm inclined to disagree.

I even posted before last years draft……“snowhiil 82 says no to earl thomas” He was #5 in missed tackles this past season…..I’d still take him over allen. He’s all over the place. Nate Allen might be a better centerfielder, Earl Thomas is the better all around safety.

But Allen wasn't chosen in a vaccuum.

Would you take Thomas over both Allen and Graham, considering Graham could very well still be a stud? And I for one prefer a safety with the ability to tackle. If he’s all over the place but can’t bring anybody down, what’s the point? He’d have to see a pretty significant increase in interceptions to make the missed tackles worthwhile.

by NOLACuse on Jun 2, 2011 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I think that it's a misleading stat.

Earl thomas proved to be a difference maker down the stretch. Maybe he did miss a lot lot of tackles, but it seems to me he was attempting to stick his nose in on a lot more plays, whereas, nate allen hung back and waited for the play to come to him. Don’t get me wrong….i don’t claim to be an expert. This is merely how i perceive the comparison between the two, having watched both guys play a fair amount this past year(one of my best friends is a seahawks fan….sad, i know)

Bitter much

Sounds like a bitter Ohio State fan taking shots at a another elite Michigan grad. Comparing players after just their first year is insane. Watch film on Earl Thomas, he got burned deep a lot more than people think. GO BIG BLUE

I would rather get the top rated DE (arguably) and the #3 safety than taken the #2 safety and the 4-5th DE

by jjrome on Jun 2, 2011 12:13 AM EDT reply actions

This my friend is only your start...

If you go and actually figure out what percentage both players contributed on your stats above you may find that Allen was not so ineffective. I have looked at the percentage stats for both; Allen compared to Eric and Earl was right in the mix. The percentage that these guys contributed to their total defense as well is a factor. Allen in 13 games was in a significant amount of our defense categories. Comparing us to other teams where they had 100+ tacklers or those that need a Reed or Sanders at Safety. Would it have helped? Sure. Would we have liked it? Oh yeah! But for the type of Defense Coordinator we had no other rookie Safety would have changed the results that drastically.

Its all relative...

Look at the division that Thomas played in, before you compare stats. NFC beast qb’s : Mcnabb , romo , and manning. NFC weak qb’s : alex , my fans boo me, smith. Not Kurt Warner on the cardinals, Bradford " I have nobody to throw the ball to. Plus, how many playoff teams did the hee-hawks play, compared to Philly opening against gb?
