The Eagles announced today that Gene Gossage, a lineman on the Eagles 1960 NFL Champions team passed away early this week at the age of 76. He played in 40 games with the Eagles from 1960-62. He was actually a 28th round draft pick of the team.
Most of us reading (and writing) this site have almost no idea who a guy like Gossage was because he played before many of us were born, but it is really important that we remember these guys. These were the guys on whose back the modern NFL was built on. The reason Danny Watkins is going to be a millionaire before he ever steps foot on a pro field is due in large part to guys like Gene Gossage.
And let's not forget the fact that this guy was part of a championship team. As Eagles fans we hear from dopes who root (and play for apparently) the other NFC East teams that always try to taunt us with "how many rings do you guys have?"
The answer to the question is three. Three rings. This franchise has three titles and one is thanks in part to Gene Gossage. So we salute and thank you Gene. RIP.
