Questioning the Eagles Draft Strategy — McNabb or Kolb | Philadelphia Eagles Blog
Over the years, the Eagles have often been lauded for their overall draft strategy of trading back and picking up lots of extra draft picks. Unlike a lot of teams that put all of their eggs in a few baskets, the Eagles understand that the draft is just a giant gamble, and the more times you play the more likely you are to win.
Is Trent Cole underrated? | Eagletarian | 05/16/2011
Defensive end Trent Cole became the first Eagles player to rank in the NFL Network's countdown of the Top 100 players of 2010, as voted by the players. The two-time Pro Bowler came in at No. 73, and was not terribly happy about it. "That's a low number being rated at but I at least made the top 100," he wrote on Twitter. "I'm used to being underrated so I laugh.
NFL owners get big win in lockout ruling - NFL News | FOX Sports on MSN
This type of ruling is exactly what the NFL had hoped through its legal strategy. The league has long struggled to receive favorable decisions in Minnesota federal district courts, which is where legal labor disputes were heard under the rules of the prior CBA that expired March 11 and led to this mess. The key for the NFL was getting to the 8th Circuit Court upon appeal, where judges who have traditionally ruled in favor of big business would be more sympathetic to its plight.

Was always a big fan of Ricky Watters. I understand in a sports town like Philly, the whole “For who, for what” comments may have been frowned at, and maybe still are, but there is no denying he was incredibly productive throughtout his entire career in Philly.

Is Trent Cole underrated? Is the sky blue? Is the grass green? Is the ocean blue? Is earth the best planet? These are the tough questions….
I think they said that 12 defensive ends are going to be on this list. Right now the ones that have been named are Jared Allen, Trent Cole, Jason Babin and Mario Williams. They’ve got 9 defensive ends better than Jared Allen and 8 better than Trent Cole? Bull. The players must be retarded. Which two players have the most sacks from the DE spot since 2006? Trent Cole and Jared Allen. They’ve been the two most productive defensive ends in the game for nearly half a decade now and they’re not even top 70? WHAT?! And they’re not even one dimensional, Jared Allen is one of the best run stopping ends in the NFL and Trent Cole is the best run stopping end in the NFL. They have the best motors. They play every down. They can do it all.
I would do a huge drawn out comment about how those two are better than everyone else but I don’t think I need to make a case for Trent Cole considering I’m on an Eagles blog and we already know how good he is.
And Dwight Freeney is so overrated it’s ridiculous. He is this feared pass rusher but you can run right at him and Trent Cole is just a solid defensive end. What kind of crap is that? How is the media even coming to that assumption? Since 2006 Trent Cole has 52 sacks while Dwight Freeney has 42. And Trent Cole is an infinitely better run defender. Do you know how many tackles Trent Cole had last year from his DE spot? 65. Do you know how many Dwight Freeney had? 25. ARE YOU FRIGGIN KIDDING ME?! On his career Trent Cole has 38 stuffs. Dwight Freeney has 32. Not that big of a difference, right? Sure, if you don’t consider the fact that Dwight has been starting twice as long as Trent Cole has. Trent Cole has more sacks, hurries, QB hits, stuffs, TFL, tackles and is 10 times the run defender that Dwight is and people think Dwight is better?
Gahh… That list is such a joke.
Merry Vickmas everyone! * Falls into pile of snow DeSean style *

Wow
The people posting comments on that cole article are absurd, glad none of them attempt to come on this board. Pathetic.

I appreciate your emotion.
But:
How is the media even coming to that assumption?
You know this list was voted on by current players right? I think you even mention the players in your post.
(Now you could argue that most players probably get a lot of their info from Sportscenter. And ESPN isn’t exactly great at giving various players their due. They have their favorites and they stick to that message until they are blue in the face.)
Limbaugh's comments were taken SO out of context
As a white guy, you really can’t say much about race without getting driven out of town by PC dorks.. Limbaugh learned the hard way.
In a nut shell, Limbaugh basically was making a point that he thinks the media was making McNabb out to be better than what he really was because hew as a black QB. A good black QB, in comparison to whites, is much more rare.
This isn’t uncommon, in factthe UFC buit up a fighter named Diego Sanchez to get more latino support for the sport.
No I dont agree that the media did that, McNabb was a highlight reel player, so the media and the casual fans are always going to fall in love with those types of players.
Even if you watched Mcnabb in 2009 when he was WILDLY inconsistent, the year where I really thought that it was an absolute must to get rid of him (and the FO agreed), if you watched Eagles highlights McNabb would have tons of highlight plays. The media loves that, notice the hall of fame lineman of the decade are barely known or talked about?? (Willie Roaf, Will Shielfs, etc)
B hop is just a straight ghetto dork. Not only did he insult educated black people, but he insulted white people too when he said "he would never lose to a white guy. (and lost):
I don’t give a shit if B Hop is a Philly guy, I root for him to lose, ESPECIALLY if he plans on anymore fights against whites.

Regardless of what you think of Limbaugh, I’m amazed at how much attention McNabb still gets for things that are not related to his ability to play football. The guy has put his foot in his mouth from time to time, but I honestly think he might be the least personally-controversial lightning rod I’ve ever seen.

Agreed
ESPECIALLY from the black community. You have to wonder if his financial success has anything to do with the heat.
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
I don’t see why it would. Jay Z is extremely rich and nobody seems to question whether or not he’s black on a regular basis.

Classic, B Hop is the worst
You’re right. When B Hop fought Calzaghe, he said “I ain’t losin’ to a white guy”. Calzaghe’s response? " That’s funny, ‘cuz I’m not losing to a black guy, white guy, purple guy, blue guy, or any guy."
Sylvester Stallone attended Calzaghe’s victory celebration that night. He grabbed the mic in front of everyone, put his arm around the Pride of Wales, and said “Hey I guess that other guy lost to a white guy after all”.
In summation, I am stealing Bernard Hopkins’ birth certificate and changing the hospital name to “Jerry Jones Hospital of Dallas”

Re: the draft strategy article….I completely agree. Moving down and having 12-player draft classes is great, if you’re trying to turnover the bottom half of the roster and get younger depth. I’m pretty sure Howie said something to this effect when he was explaining his approach to the draft.
But eventually, he’ll need to take the picks we have and do the opposite: build the top half of the roster. If his plan is to continually fill the LB slots (or whatever) with 4th-7th round picks and hope we beat the odds, people will laud our draft strategy as they beat us in the playoffs. A continuous strategy like this will waste our resources that should have been used elsewhere, and give us a team of good depth, but not elite talent.
disagree
we have elite talent. We just put more emphasis on certain positions. We have had top defenses inthe league without big names.. We were the 3rd best D in 2008, the only decent name was a fist time starter Stew Bradley.
What would you rather see happen? See us trade our two 1sts a 2nd and a 4th for one single player ala ATL?
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
I don’t think anyone wants a trade that stupid. But we can’t keep building infinite depth with nothing really to provide depth for. We have some elite talent, no question. But we have a lot of non-remarkable talent, too; particularly on defense. Not enough to assist to the good players we do have (Asante, Cole)

We need a couple of players on defense
A solid corner is definitely one of them but remember with a simlar defense under Jim Johnson we were top 5 d…. I think McDermott had a lot to do with us sucking……..
JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason
One thing we are definitely missing is some of the chemistry and attitude those D’s had — maybe not all great individually, but greater than the sum of their parts. I don’t know where that went (maybe it went with JJ)…and you certainly can’t draft it. We need to get that back.
This is not a solicitation for Apollo Creed/Eye of the Tiger refs.
Totally agree
with Joe. We have traded up in the draft. We have signed big time players in the past. Look at superbowl winners. Green Bay, Steelers, New England. How many times have they traded up and drafted “elite” talent. I agree with our draft strategy.

Re: Draft Strategy
I have a lot of thoughts on this, and if so inclined in the near future, then I may do an expanded FanPost to fully discuss them with the BGN universe, but not right now.
In the meantime, let me say this: this regime is clear in that there are certain positions (QB, LT, CB, DE) that they value more than others, and those positions are the positions that they will splurge on, ie through a fat FA contract or a high draft pick. Obviously, there are only so many fat contracts they can hand out to FAs and only so many high picks they can make. So they are somewhat limited in how deep they can build the roster.
As for the rest of the positions, this regime is also clear in the belief that the more bodies they bring into camp to compete (the key word here), the better that position will ultimately be when they put the finished product on the field. This is where they utilize the quantity over quality approach in the draft, by trading down and accumulating later picks. Picks they almost always use on guys who have slipped due to 1 of 2 reasons: coming off of a major injury and/or a perceived lack of measurables (size, speed or both). While this makes it harder and less likely for these guys to be NFLers, it doesn’t automatically preclude them from being great selections. These guys sometimes (admittedly, less often than not) turn into great NFLers. See Trent Cole, who fell to the 6th because teams questioned if he was big enough. The most obvious example of course is Tom Brady.
In the referenced article from McNabb or Kolb or Vick, he uses as an example Sean Lee vs the 6 guys taken in his place: Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, Mike Kafka, Clay Harbor, Ricky Sapp, Riley Cooper and Dion Lewis. Now, Sean Lee could turn out to be a Pro Bowler, or just an average NFL starter for a few years, or a guy who tears his ACL and never reaches his full potential /cough Stewart Bradley cough/, or he could end up being not good enough and out of the league in a year or two. The point is, from the Cowboys perspective, the success of that 1 pick solely relies on what Sean Lee does. Or doesn’t do. But for the Eagles, we now have 6 guys who will determine if that pick is a success. In essence, they have improved the probability of that 1 pick being a success by increasing the chances that the pick can succeed. Those 6 guys could all end up being filler for the bottom half of the roster. Or not. What if Kafka turns out to be an average QB and Te’O turns out to be a good to great DT? What if Ricky Sapp turns into a 10 sack guy and Dion Lewis turns out to be the next Darren Sproles?
While trading up for sure-to-be studs is sexy and makes the off-season fun, making sure that the bottom half of your roster can fill in for injured members of the top half of your roster when needed with minimal to no dropoff in production provided, and it absolutely will be needed during the season and playoffs, is what may end up determining whether or not you achieve the Ultimate Success, winning the SB. Green Bay showed this last year.
