Hasselbeck: Kevin Kolb Will Dictate The QB Market

ESPN's NFL analyst Tim Hasselbeck ranked his top five "QBs on the move" today and seems to think that Kevin Kolb is the top prize amongst QB needy teams and believes the Eagles backup will dictate the entire market.

His top five available QBs are as follows.

1. Kevin Kolb

2. Donovan McNabb

3. Matt Hasselbeck

4. Kyle Orton

5. Alex Smith

"The guy that's going to dictate everything is going to Kevin Kolb." Hasselbeck said, "Really the #1 guy on the market. Wherever he goes is probably going to dictate where everybody else goes."

He also said that Carson Palmer would be on his list, but doesn't believe he'll actually become available.

I don’t see how you can have Alex Smith on there instead of Vince Young. Since it seems like Young won’t get a starting job I wonder if we should go after him as a backup since Andy & Marty like to work with QBs? It might be smart on his part if its a 1 or 2 year deal

No F'n Way

There is no way I’d ever want VY in an Eagles uniform he is a HORRIBLE QB and shouldn’t be on an NFL roster unless a team is desperate or idiotic (I’m looking at you Al Davis)

You know, a lot of people said there was no F'n way we were going to get Vick, because he was a horrible QB.

I am not as turned off by his mechanics and decision making as I am by the fact that he seems to lack the desire to become better, accept coaching, and his lack of fortitude when the going gets tough. I agree that we don’t want him, but because I don’t think an off season unemployed will inspire him to change his approach like a year and a half in Leavenworth will.

by ATG. on May 13, 2011 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

meh

Vick at least had several years as a starter with some success. VY had very little success and couldn’t survive as a starter. Also while Vick had legal troubles VY has attitude problems and was continually benched by Jeff Fischer for it. While the Eagles don’t shy away from big egos they don’t tend to take in bad locker room guys.

There is no way you can compare the too. VY will IMHO never be heard from again.

I was simply pointing out that comparing the situation of VY to Vick is apples to oranges. I understand that you agree we shouldn’t go after him but I appreciate the condescension.

What games has VY won? The Titans won games while he was the QB, I will argue there Defense and CJ were more the reason for the win than VY. What games can you argue he actually won for them 2 maybe 3 tops that’s not a lot of games.

That’s tough to argue against, but the one thing working against you is Collins’ awful (0-6?) start a while back that was followed by Young taking them to a .500 season. I believe he has more losses than wins in his NFL career too.

Your own franchise wants absolutely nothing to do with Vince Young.

And there’s a reason for it: he’s a known headcase, he’s a locker room cancer, and his ridiculously inflated sense of entitlement has kept him from ever developing into a functional NFL quarterback.

Referencing games that he managed to win in his rookie year, before NFL defenses had an opportunity to adjust to his brand of athleticism and skill set, has nothing to do with the here and now. The problem is that Young is essentially the same player now that he was back in his rookie season, because he refuses to take the game seriously and doesn’t respond to coaching.

Mark my words: not a single team in this league is going to want Vince Young as their starter. Winning seasons or not, he’s a liability on the field and a potential nightmare off of it. He might land somewhere as a backup, but that’s it. And to assert that he’s the #2 quarterback available in a market that includes both Kolb and McNabb is ludicrous.

they adjusted so well to his athleticisim that he bak his fourth yr and went 8-2 as starter then came right back the 2nd yr n n b4 he went out with injury they were 1st in the afc south. his improvements his qb rating n td/int ratio went up when he came back his fourth yr. hes such a locker room cancer that one of his wr got fined for a celebration that had the initials vy on there.. n the whole thing abt this arguement is we want know whos right till the seasons over whos the best out the group. i.e the dolphins chose Culpepper over drew brees the year he took the saints to the confrence championship n the vick situation. so honestly bro we wont know till the season over

Lol I’d take you seriously if you could use the reply button correctly or could actually write a coherent sentence.

Vince Young didn’t lead a comeback against the Colts Bironas nailed a 60 yarder to win that game. He got gifted the ball on the Colts 42 and you are saying it’s amazing that he completed 2 passes? The second TD he threw they got the ball on IND 20. So yea I think the Defense/ST had more to do with those drives than VY did. VY had 163 yards 2 TDs and 2 INTs I’m not handing him the MVP with those numbers but I guess you are.

The Giants game was more of the same scoring drives that started on the Giants 46, 36 the one long drive they had he had to scramble for all the yards because he’s not a good enough QB to use his arm. All VY will ever be is a freak athlete he’s a garbage QB.

Counterpoint: that 2008 13-3 season?

Vince Young got benched in Week 1 and Kerry Collins did the heavy lifting that year. If there was a player who made a living by losing to the San Diego Chargers, Vince Young was definitely that player…

Vick had a life-altering experience that completely changed his approach to the game

It changed not only how he approached the game, it changed how he approached life. This really focused him on being better. I don’t think Young has really appreciated this yet. Sure, he may have lost his job, but he hasn’t had a conscience altering experience (like say Kerry Collins) where he has to wake up every day and rededicate himself to the game.

Without this kind of commitment, there’s no way we should touch this guy. Vick knew he fucked up and and set out to changed things, starting from the bottom. I’m pretty sure Young feels he was wronged through no fault of his own, and expects to be treated as a starter.

This.

Well stated DLawrence. Well stated. You had a kid who by all accounts was utterly uncoachable and now he is in perhaps one of the best places in the league for QB development. He has the maturity and wisdom to understand this.

Secondarily, it is my impression that Kolb is ranked and regarded highly in the league, not because of his physical gifts – which are solid but not spectacular – but because the word around the league is that he has a very high football IQ and great growth potential.

Moreover, the trade would be in his best interests. Vick is a once in a lifetime talent that finally learned, as Michael Jordan did early in his carreer, that all of the talent in the world can not replace hard work, focus and dedication. From what I understand McNabb was going to go to Oakland not Washington, but he didn’t want to go – from what I also understand, the Eagles could have forced the trade and McNabb would have had to fight it however he could (perhaps he could have been successful). He apparently wanted to go to Washington. My point in saying this is that Reid really seems to be a players coach. Reid knows that unless Vick gets hurt, Kolb won’t be starting here and that it is better for him in another city. Moreover, if Vick has a bad game or two – the Kolb chants will get louder and he doesn’t want to deal with that issue.

Let's be honest here.

Do I want it to happen? No.. Fuck no…

Is it possible? … Very I’d actually throw some odds of 60-40 he lands here should we want him.

Does it make sense to bring VY here? Yes, here’s why:

(1) Duel Threat.. Let’s be honest Andy’s always had success with QB’s who can improvise and move around. McNabb, Garcia, Vick, Kolb can move a little. Feeley was able to step up and move a bit… He fits the mold from an athletic standpoint.

(2) He’s got a good deep ball.. Let’s face it, he’s actually got a good arm on him, not Vicks, but he’s got one comparable to McNabb.. and that’s all we really need… Also he’s not that far off from a mechanics standpoint and whatnot.. Maybe with the chance to learn behind the best dual threat QB of all time, and some coaches who just know how to groom QB’s and a QB friendly system maybe VY could thrive here.

(3) VY has some issues. He’s a head case. I think if he could sit a year or two somewhere he’d learn, better himself as a QB and a person, mature a lot and then be able to come in and play at some point.

I’m not pushing VY, I’m just looking at it from a logical standpoint.. Also I’d like to say VY is starting material, like it or not he’s got that ability and his athletic ability alone will make him a starter eventually.

He’s got the mobility that Andy prizes in his quarterbacks, and he was actually developing into a pretty successful player before the Favre fiasco took hold in Minnesota. At this point he’ll probably never become the player he could have been with the right coaching and substantial playing time, but he’s still one of the best backup-caliber QBs available and would fit better than most into a system designed primarily for Vick.

A Bronco fan here trying to feel out Orton's trade value

What is your view on what you all should get for Kolb? I’ve been hearing a lot of “Kolb for a 1st round pick or Orton for a 2nd round” talk (from places like the Cardinal’s blog), but was wondering what was the Eagles’ perspective on his trade value.

PS – absolutely agree that Orton is far better than Hasselbeck. I’d say he’s more valuable than McNabb, given his age. But I suppose I’m biased.

Apparently between Tebow and Brady Quinn they think they're set.

Cue hysterical laughter.

Seriously though, Orton may not be elite but he’s one of the more underrated QBs in the league. assuming he could be had for a good price, he’s definitely an attractive option for any of the teams in need of a veteran signal caller this year.

by licensetochill on May 14, 2011 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

The reasons we probably will trade Orton

A) We are in rebuilding mode
B) We have to see if Tebow is going to develop, and Quinn is a passable backup
C) Andrew Luck, etc – good looking rookie crop of QBs next year
D) Orton’s contract will be up after this year, at which point he will leave as a FA if he isn’t our starter at that point

If you guys end up keeping Kolb, we’ll be more than happy – that leaves more teams in need for us to trade Orton. I see both sides on that one… Vick’s injury potential makes Kolb valuable even as a backup – but if you get a first plus a starter… that could be too much to pass up. Especially since D applies to Kolb as well as Orton.

I like the idea

of Leinart or Alex Smith. It is easy just to say “they suck” which they have but to be fair they haven’t been in very good situations, especially Alex Smith. I think with Andy and Marty’s coaching Alex Smith would be a very good back up. We also have to remember that we are talking about a back up quarterback, not a starter. If we were looking for a starting caliber quarterback as our back up we already have that in Kolb.

Cowboys suck.

well said

we don’t need a world beater back up i would be fine with A J Feely level back up, he can come in and not screw up so the rest of our team can pick up the slack and win

You know, Alex Smith isn’t as bad as people make him out to be. He’s a mediocre starter/good backup. I can definitely see him higher than Marc Bulger.

McNabb and Hasselback are too high, though. Kyle Orton, who is way underrated, is easily better than those two guys.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Didn’t Smith also have a new OC almost every year? And the head coaching while he’s been there hasn’t been that great either…

If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

Yup.

Plus couple of shoulder injuries in his career. Very unlucky fellow.

Jesus Christ, reading this incoherent babble gives me a headache. This is a message board, not a text and not twitter. Also, punctuation should be embraced and utilized, not forgotten and disregarded with reckless abandon.
