PFF On Michael Vick Going Deep

ARLINGTON TX - DECEMBER 12: Quarterback Michael Vick #7 of the Philadelphia Eagles drops back to pass against the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium on December 12 2010 in Arlington Texas. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

The guys at Pro Football Focus published an article today about the best deep ball throwers in the NFL. They calculated the completion percentage of every throw a QB made over 20 yards and got some surprising news and some not so much...

As it turns out, Vince Young had the best deep ball completion percentage of any QB. However, he had about half the amount of throws as everyone else, so it's hard to say how he might have done is he played a full year. If you took him out, the top five are David Garrard, Matt Schaub, Phillip Rivers, Drew Brees and Michael Vick. Vick completed 27 of his 65 deep balls for 41.54%

Also interestingly, aside from Young, Vick threw a higher percentage of his passes deep than any other QB in football, which is probably smart considering his high success rate on those passes. Plus, he's obviously got the weapons to do it.

The guys at the top weren't as surprising as the guys at the bottom however. As it turns out, Peyton Manning was awful throwing the deep ball at only 30.53% despite the fact that he threw far more deep balls than anyone else. Among the other bad deep throwers last year? Joe Flacco, Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan (who I'm quickly starting to think is the most overrated QB in the NFL).

I wonder what exactly this list reveals. Certainly it says something about the QBs, but I also think it speaks to the kind of WRs they have. While Joe Flacco has been incredibly overrated from what I've seen, it is fair to say that he has no WRs that can get downfield. Tom Brady had one of the lower deep ball completion rates last year, but had no WRs that stretch the field. Peyton Manning had some of those guys to a degree, but not like in years' passed.

It's really some interesting work and there's a lot more there than I've touched on here.

Not bad, but the question is: can he do it again?

AR should have to wear a Flava Flav necklace until he learns how to manage a fucking clock.

Screw being the holder, I wanna be called the quarterback of the field goal team.

His deep ball was on fire in the beginning of the season, but tapered off a bit towards the end of the season.

Teams

also started playing their safeties 20-30 yards deep so we couldn’t hit the long bomb

The strangest thing about his last interception in the playoff game

was that it was UNDERthrown.

I mean he’s michael vick, probably the strongest arm in the league. How does he underthrow guys?

he said he thought the safety would have picked it off if he lead Cooper too much, so he didn’t put as much on it as he should have….which lead to the corner picking it off.

Matt Ryan (who I’m quickly starting to think is the most overrated QB in the NFL).

Statements like these won’t phase him…i mean….he’s Matty Ice!!

Matt Ryan (who I’m quickly starting to think is the most overrated QB in the NFL)

Unquestionably. It’s a shame too, because it’s really not his fault. He’s a smart kid and a good player, but people make him out to be some sort of walking legend. That title formerly was on lockdown by Brett Favre and I had always assumed that Eli would slide neatly into that role, but it’s gotta be Ryan.

Flacco too

Both over rated

by Joe_D on May 10, 2011 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

How highly is Flacco rated?

As far as I can tell
Brady
P.Manning
Brees
Rivers
Rodgers
Vick
Roethlisberger
are all rated higher than Flacco.
He would be in the mix with
E.Manning
Schaub
Ryan
Freeman?
Cutler?

Flacco was 7th in QB rating stat last year and won in the playoffs for the 3rd year in his 3 year career.
His TD/Int and QB rating have improved every year and he has started every game of his career since day 1.
The only knock on him that I see is his relative lack of mobility.

Vick

This deepball stat is good and all, and its certainly helps to have Mac and Jax helpin out, but on the other hand, it’s the short stuff offense that im a bit concerned with. We need to have a bit more of the Patriots style offense when it comes to short passes, cross routes & slants….. Andy, Marty, Vick and the WR crew (other than McCoy cause his catches are mostly short routes anyways) need to imrove on this next year.

Well, his overall completion percentage is a good bit higher than his deep ball %, so that would mean his short pass percentage is very high.

I am moreso worried, not about his accuracy at all, but in the diversity of the playbook when it comes to the short yardage passing game.

Vick’s accuracy, while still can be improved, is less and less of an issue IMO.

You want DeSean going over the middle more?

So he can drop more passes and miss more games from concussions? He’s a 789.

They have more than 1 WR. And Desean shouldnt be a one trick pony on offense and expect top 5 $$$ ….Not every short play is a crossing route on a rail road…

Avant isn’t speedy by any means, he’s known for being a short guy. And they already throw enough short stuff to McCoy in a faux running game. I think we’re expecting Celek to start doing more of the short stuff.

Anyway, guess you haven’t noticed but I don’t think DeSean deserves top 5 money. Or top 10 for that matter.

And, finally, a majority of your short stuff is across the middle. You don’t want to send him on outs because of his weak hands. Curls and hooks are fine, except the first time a physical corner or safety lowers the boom on his frail body.

No, he’s just a 789 with superior punt returning ability.

When I see stuff like this

I think to myself that Vick should and probably will throw deep more next year. I also think that drafting a new RG will help with these plans. In conclusion: Andy Reid is really an evil genius.

every games first play

it seemed like nearly every game had an interesting first play that involved Jackson shuffling around to distract the defense, then running really ( REALLY) fast, and Vick just chucking it the length of the field. This worked well for two reasons, Jackson is fast, and Vick can throw it far. I dont think it means much for his long accuracy as much as it means the receiver is a really important piece of the puzzle. I think JaMarcus Russel could have run those plays great also.

My wife would get annoyed when I would tell her to watch the first play because it will be long and exciting. She would then be annoyed that if I was right, why couldnt the other team stop it … well, Vick to Jackson isnt really easy to stop! I only remember one of these as an int, and most of these ended up complete. I wish I had my dvds from last year to put together a montage to see if this is really what happened.

Mcnugget would do the same thing with Owens.

I would always get pissed when i missed the 1st series back then cuz chances were we completed a great play.

Articles like this are good – I’ve just always had a problem with their player ratings, which make no sense at all. They have DeSean Jackson rated as the 90-something best WR in the NFL. It’s tough to take their metrics seriously when it spits out that kind of absurdity.

Most statistical analysis

I have found for football tends to overrate the short safe play and underrate the big gamble play. I speculate this is due to most football analysts cutting their teeth on baseball analysis, where preventing an out is more important than getting a hit (if that makes sense). In football, it doesn’t quite work that way. The value of a TD is far greater than the value of a first down, which is obvious to anyone with common sense. Metrics don’t have common sense and sometimes conclude that DJax’s tendancy to drop the ball outweighs his abilities to make big plays, leading to this kind of absurd conclusion.

The

hours of fun we have with stats like this.

How does Vick compare to Eli on the deep ball issue well…

Vick was 6th on comp % and Eli was 7th – one extra inc by Vick or one more comp by Eli see them swap places.

Deep attempts per game – Vick was 2nd and Eli was 15th – however the difference equates to just 12 attempts over the course of the season.

Int’s – both had 5 picked off but Vick was 12th worse and Eli was 17th worse

So what does the PFF article prove – that Vick’s % is slightly distorted by the lower number of attempts compared to other QB’s or that Eli over the course of the season was the equal to or slightly better deep baller than Vick by virtue of having a lower % of passes picked off.

… and Vick is still a force in the run-game.
