With the thirty-ninth pick in the 2011 BGN Mock Draft, mr_england selects...
Colin Kaepernick - QB, Nevada
After countless years of stability, the Tennessee Titans are set to begin a new chapter in the franchise's history. Gone is Jeff Fisher, who was the longest tenured Head Coach in the NFL, along with ‘Franchise' Quarterback Vince Young who blew his last chance with the Titans this past year with a locker room confrontation with Fisher that became ugly very fast. Titans' owner Bud Adams decided to get rid of both Fisher and Young in order to start fresh with the Franchise.
In Fisher's place steps former O Line Coach, Mike Munchak. Munchak has created a good name for himself as he has been producing quality players throughout his tenure as a position coach. Four of his players have totalled 10 Pro Bowl invitations and his offensive lines have paved the way for five different running backs to total 11 1,000-yard rushing season. Munchak replaced both his coordinators already this offseason, bringing in Chris Palmer and Jerry Gray to coach the Offense and Defence respectively.
More after the jump...
Even after such a bad year, there are building blocks in place to help restore the franchise to its previous standard. On the offensive side of the ball, Chris Johnson and Kenny Britt are both young established players in this league. Their booked Tackles of Michael Roos and David Stewart is arguably the best tandem in the NFL. Jared Cook is a young athletic Tight End who is starting to make strides as he matures and will challenge for the starting job next season. Using the 8th overall pick on Georgia WR A.J. Green gives the Titans the best WR prospect to come along since Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald.
Defensively, the Titans are a bit more of a mess; two of their best players from last year, DE Jason Babin and MLB Stephen Tulloch are Free Agents, although at 26 years old, I expect Tulloch to be resigned. The starting Corners of Cortland Finnegan and Alterraun Verner are decent and FS Michael Griffen has the talent to be a perennial Pro Bowl player.
Going into the draft, I see the Titans' primary needs as QB, DE, LB, SS, G, and C.
To me, this pick came down to a QB or a Defensive lineman. The Titans could use another young pass rusher opposite Derrick Morgan such as Brooks Reed, but with the firing of Jeff Fisher and the PR nightmare that ensued with Vince Young, the Titans require a new leader to control the locker room and lead them back to the playoffs.Colin Kaepernick (6'5" 230lbs) is one of; if not the best dual threat quarterbacks currently in college football. Along with playing Quarterback, he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs but chose to play football, the sport he enjoys more. NFL scouts and coaches will love the commitment that shows to football. Kaepernick currently stands as
the only quarterback in the history of Division I college football to have passed for over 10,000 yards and rushed for over 4,000 yards in a collegiate career and also as the only QB to have passed for over 2,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 yards in a single season three times in a career (consecutively). Coming out of Nevada, Kaepernick may need a ‘redshirt' year learning from Kerry Collins and adjusting to life in the NFL, for although he has a tremendous arm, his mechanics require some work. Kaepernick makes sense for the Titans as he follows the prototype of the runner/passer such as previous Titans Steve McNair and Vince Young. Kaepernick has experience in big games as it was him and Nevada that ended Boise State's 24 game win streak and beating Boston College in their bowl game this past year.
Colin Kaepernick would be an ideal candidate as the next franchise Quarterback of the Tennessee Titans. To view his college stats, click here.
Next on the clock will be captain nodar with the Dallas Cowboys.
