Top 10 Eagles NFL Draft Busts - #9 Billy McMullen

Remember all those years when the Eagles  couldn't draft a WR to save their life? In the Reid era they've pumped a number of high picks into the position and got very little out of it until they hit on DeSean Jackson & Jeremy Maclin. One of the early misses was Billy McMullen.

Billy McMullen - 2003 - 3rd round 95th overall pick

Remember what people used to say about Billy McMullen? "He looks just like TO out there!" And it was true that physically he did resemble Terrell Owens at 6'4, 215 pounds. But that was where the comparisons stopped. McMullen simply never found a place in the offense or showed an ability to use his superior size to his advantage catching just one pass in his rookie year, three the next and finally 18 in his third season. After that, the Eagles gave up and traded the former 3rd round pick to the Vikings for undrafted free agent Hank Baskett. Baskett would catch as many passes in his rookie has McMullen did over three years with the Eagles.

Over his entire NFL career, he had 52 catches and 3 TDs.

Looking at Wikipedia, here is a list of better players we could have drafted:
-Justin Fargas
-Terrence McGee
-Asante Samuel
-Ovie Mughelli
-Robert Mathis
-David Diel
-Cato June
and to this day I have no idea how he went undrafted…
-Antonio Gates

Umm

Maybe because he was a freaking basketball player?

And the concept of drafting these people at the time of the draft shouldn’t be that complicated. If Mitch Mustain goes round 7 and is the best QB in the class, and Newton goes top 5 and busts, you can’t logically say “they missed on Mustain”. Hindsight is…..

It’s true. People always say this about Jason Witten. Every team passed on him twice. The Cowboys took a long snapper before him. That’s how much they valued him.

Sometimes you just get lucky.

The Eagles would love to say that they knew how good Trent Cole would be when they took him in the 5th round, but there was a lot of luck there.

The Patriots brass will tell you ‘til you’re blue in the face that they knew Brady would be a steal.

That’s why they passed on him 5 times…

Gates

was a basketball player with little football experience so represented a gamble.

Other teams have tried to replicate by signing basketball types who have never panned out.

College experience, yeah. Nick Saban wanted him at MSU, but Gates refused to strictly play football.

And Saban knows talent.

i still dont know how we were able to trade him for anything more than a bag of chips.
the fact that we got a decent amount of production out of hank just makes it that much more incredible.

We're pretty lucky

Think of a team like the Texans trying to do this list.

We’ve had consistancy at the top. Reid is a good talent evaluator. He may have some misses, but overall I’m confident in him and our front office.

jay

how can you call a 3rd rounder a bust? are they supposed to be stars or something?

JoeD AKA The Voice Of Reason

by Joe_D on Apr 5, 2011 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

They should be o.k starters, considering the fact that there are 22 starters and a team is only given 2 picks in the first two rounds.

Or if he was a serviceable backup like Avant, he wouldn’t be considered a bust.

They don’t have to be stars, but I think you expect to get something worthwhile out of a 3rd round pick. Really you should get a starter.

This is why a guy like Gocong won’t be on the list. 3rd round pick who wasn’t great, but at least started a bunch of a games. McMullen did nothing.
