2011 BGN Community Mock Draft Pick #36: The Denver Broncos

With the thirty-sixth pick in the 2011 BGN Mock Draft, KByars selects...

Marvin Austin - DT, UNC

The Broncos' needs are many. They could use upgrades at almost every defensive position. Denver's defensive line is their most glaring need with defensive tackle residing firmly at the top the list. Unfortunately for the Broncos, six defensive tackles and nine defensive ends have all ready been selected, leaving the pool of available defensive lineman a bit shallow.

Given the amount of defensive linemen who were all ready off the board, there was a temptation to use this pick on safety Rahim Moore to further bolster their secondary, which would have been greatly improved with the addition of the top-ranked safety to the top-ranked cornerback, first round selection Patrick Peterson. However, Denver's defensive line is just too big of a liability to not address, leaving them to gamble on Marvin Austin.

More after the jump...

If not for spending his senior year not playing football, Austin would quite likely have been drafted long before this pick. Austin was suspended from the team during an investigation into players taking money from agents; he was later kicked off the team. Austin's loss could be a boon for the Broncos. If Austin is able to shake off his past and the rust that he accrued in his lost year, Denver could find that they have landed early first round talent at two positions of need.

"Heading into the 2010 campaign, Marvin Austin was turning into a great defensive tackle. As a true freshman he did amazingly well and even earned three starts. His 26 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks were great numbers for a true freshman who was not on the field all that often. In 2008 he started 11 games. While his sacks and tackles-for-loss numbers were down, Austin turned into a great run stuffer and totaled 38 tackles. Austin tallied 42 tackles, 6.0 tackles-for-loss and 4.0 sacks during what ended up being his last season in Chapel Hill," from ffltoolbox.com. "Despite not playing all year, Austin could still be a first rounder. He has the talent."

Next on the clock will be l3irdman3901 with the Cleveland Browns.
