By taking Patrick Peterson instead of a QB, the Cardinals are my leader in the clubhouse for the Kevin Kolb sweepstakes. That of course could change tonight if they draft a QB early in the 2nd tonight.
A few weeks ago, we put together a chart of what would be good results of various teams drafting QBs, and what would be bad results. From that piece:
The supply and demand of QB's in the NFL is staunchly in favor of the "haves," i.e. the Eagles, who have 2 NFL quality starting QB's in Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick, and by my count, 14 potential teams that could be looking for an answer at QB during this offseason. In the upcoming draft, the higher the number of QB-desperate teams that draft what they think is an answer at QB, the lower the demand for Kolb will be. Conversely, if a low number of QB-desperate teams are able to draft their answer at QB, the better it is for the Eagles in trying to maximize the compensation they'll receive for Kolb's services.
Here's that chart again (after the jump), with the updated results. Only Andy Dalton, Ryan Mallett and Colin Kaepernick remain as potential answers at QB among this draft class. With 4 teams that still desperately need a QB and at least 8 others that could realistically draft one, the Eagles still maintain a high level of supply/demand leverage in any trade negotiations for Kevin Kolb:
| Draft order | Team | Good or bad | Comment | First round result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Panthers | Good | They already have a QB they drafted high last year, and if they don't draft Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert #1 overall, it's an indication that they're willing to give Jimmy Clausen another year to show what he can do. | Drafted Cam Newton - GOOD result
Broncos | Good | Like the Panthers, the Broncos drafted a QB high last year (Tim Tebow), and already have another decent option in Kyle Orton. They won't panic if they don't come away with a QB in this draft. | No QB
Bills | Good | The Bills have so many holes to fix, that it's unrealistic they'll be a serious competitor anytime soon, so they're likely not to trade a few picks for Kolb, especially when they have a competent enough QB in Ryan Fitzpatrick to hold down the fort while they build. | No QB
Bengals | Bad | Carson Palmer is done in Cincy. They'll need a QB in the worst way if they don't draft one. The only downside here is that owner/GM Mike Brown has the reputation of being extremely difficult to deal with. | No QB - GOOD result
Cardinals | Bad | Their QB's are John Skelton, Max Hall, and Richard Bartel. Pretty self-explanatory here. | No QB - GOOD result
Browns | Good | I had an internal debate on this one, but I'd much rather see them draft a QB and leave other teams after them like San Fran, Tennessee, and Minnesota desperate. | No QB
49ers | Bad | This team has some nice pieces in place and the addition of Kolb would probably make them the favorites to win the NFC West. The downside of trading Kolb here is that he could very well lead them to the playoffs, and thus, a lower first round pick. Still, it's a great team to have in the mix for Kolb's services once the draft shakes out. | No QB - GOOD result
Titans | Bad | Tennessee is another team that has no shortage of talent, but a black hole at QB. They were 5-2 at one point last year, and could compete for the AFC South title immediately with Kolb. Panic level should be very high if they don't draft a QB. | Drafted Jake Locker - BAD result
Cowboys | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so if they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Redskins | Good | McNabb is done in DC, and they need a QB… badly… but I just can't imagine that Mike Shanahan and Co could possibly have the balls to trade for an Eagles QB again after getting burned last offseason. | No QB
Texans | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Vikings | Bad | With an aging but still talented team, the Vikes seem like a perfect landing spot for Kolb. Seeing them draft a QB and taking them out of the Kolb running would be a major disappointment. | Drafted Christian Ponder - BAD Result
Lions | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Rams | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Dolphins | Good | Chad Henne regressed last year, but they're not in as bad of shape as some of the other teams around the NFL in terms of their QB. I'd be fine with the Dolphins taking away one of the rookie QB's. | No QB
Jaguars | Good | The Jags still have the underrated David Garrard at QB, and while they'd like an upgrade in the form of Kolb, they won't have enough panic in them to trade away a bunch of future picks. | Drafted Blaine Gabbert - GOOD result
Patriots | Good | It's unlikely for sure, but don't completely dismiss the possibility of the Pats taking a QB early. They have so many picks that if they really like a guy, it wouldn't be so crazy for them to draft a guy to groom under Tom Brady. | No QB
Chargers | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Giants | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Buccaneers | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Chiefs | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Colts | Good | See Pats. | No QB
Eagles | X | X |
Saints | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Seahawks | Bad | Not much explanation necessary here, as the Hawks have probably received the most attention in the past couple months as a team that has a high interest in KK. | No QB - GOOD result
Ravens | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Falcons | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | HAHAHA
Pats | Good | See above. | No QB
Bears | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Jets | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Steelers | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
Packers | Good | Won't be trading for Kolb, so in the extremely unlikely event they draft a QB, it thins the supply. | No QB
