How much do people like Mark Herzlich?

This is a kid I would love to see the Eagles get.  I think he would be great value if we could get him in the fifth/sixth round. Most mocks have him projected in 6th round or later. In the pro football weekly evaluation article they have on PhiladelphiaEagles.com they have him rated as a late sixth round grade.

I just don't see it.  He earned first team all ACC honors in 2008 as well as being named ACC defensive player of the year. I see a good football player who was obviously coming back from some serious stuff that still played at a pretty high level being not anywhere near 100 percent (he suffered broken bones in his foot and hand in 2010 not to mention not really being able to prepare for football the same way while going through cancer treatment.)

The kid was a beast in 2007 and 2008 before being diagnosed and going through treatment in 2009. Look at some measurables and stats.

Measurables

Height: 6'4"

Weight: 244 pounds

Stats

2010: 65 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 4 INT, 4 passes broken up, 2 FF

2008: 110 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, 6 Interceptions, 8 passes broken up, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles.

2007: 97 tackles 12 tackles for loss, 1.5 sack, 4 passes broken up, 1 INT, 2 fumble recoveries, 2 forced fumbles.

As you can see his numbers took a noticeable dip from 2007, 2008, to 2010 after he spent a year battling and beating cancer.  But when he was at his best he was a production machine racking up tackles, sacks, and getting his hands on the football.

Over the last two seasons Herzlich has 10 interceptions from the linebacker spot which is very impressive. He was split out wide a lot in coverage at BC and in watching tape you can see just how athletic he is in coverage. This is something the eagles don't have. He is a big linebacker who can cover the tight end, a major weakness that has plagued the Birds for many seasons now.

Also you can see he is a pretty big guy. He had the physicality in his game in '07 and '08 as you see when you watch film, but he definitely looks smaller and less physical coming off the treatment in '10. As the year went on though he was said to really play more and more physical.

Herzlich is a team leader. Apart from the obvious fighting cancer and beating it side he also was always known as a high character hard working guy. He is very instinctive with a high football IQ. He also has a non-stop motor and is extremely competitive. He sounds like a Andy Reid type of player.

Now the obvious question is can he ever regain the form of a surefire first round draft pick, maybe even top ten. I don't think thats the question at all. I think it's less of an if but more of a when. This kid seems like he will let nothing stand in his way of greatness, not even cancer. I'm don't just like the kid becuase of the story or publisity stunt, he is a heck of a football player.

It all started for me when I was comparing him to Casey Matthews who could come off as early as the third round. I didn't watch enough tape on Casey Matthews but from what I saw I was only slightly impressed for how high he is projected (granted I only watched two games). I personally would much rather have Herzlich in the fifth/sixth than Matthews in the third.

Let me know what you think. I am attaching links to two game films of Herzlich from this year because his stuff from '08 is just rediculous and he is was not that same player this year. I also will attach two of Matthews to compare.

I would have no problem with the Eagles getting him.

Hell, if he returns to form, he could be another one of those 5th Round Gems the Eagles seem to be so adept at finding. That said, it’s really hard to ignore what has happened to him and the effect that it has had on his body, and it reflected on his Combine and Pro Day performances.

In short though, I’d be all for the Eagles picking him up. There’s just something to be said about what could possibly be, and his outstanding persona that he carries with him.

It would be worth risking a 5th on him

Apparently I'm the only one (outside the author) who doesn't like him

He’s a great story, and his battle with cancer and return to football in such a short time is nothing less than a miracle. He seems like a great kid and he’s an absolute inspiration, but to be honest I really think he’s a vastly overrated football player. If it weren’t for his battle with cancer, I don’t think we’d even know his name. Worth a 7th or UDFA? Definitely. He’s a leader, so that’s a plus too. And because of the leadership skills he might be worth a 5th because fifth round picks are crapshoots anyway, but I think he’ll be lucky to be a solid backup/spot starter.

Well prior to his cancer

He was considered by most analysts a first round lock after his 2008 year. If anything holds Herzlich back, it will be his age. He’ll be 24 at the start of the season and combine that with his fight with cancer, I have to think most teams would consider his body on a time limit. Chemotherapy takes a lot out of you, especially Mark’s case of Ewing’s Sarcoma which vastly speeds up the aging process of the bones even when successfully treated assuming that it hit the normal place which are the pelvis and ribs. So I don’t believe its that he’s overrated, its that while his birth certificate may say 23, his body is going to give out a little sooner than later. Possibly by the time he is 30-31.

“He earned first team all ACC honors in 2008 as well as being named ACC defensive player of the year. " Like Macjack09 said he was projected as a lock in the first round before the cancer. I’m pretty sure we would have heard of him. Yes he definately didn’t play up to this level this year but thats because of how much the cancer treatment took away from his body and how he was really not able to keep in football shape after a year of chemotherapy. Macjac09 is right though chemo does really hurt your body and it will be interesting to see if it ever comes back. If it does come back he has first round talent probably the second best linebacker in the class next to Von Miller. A fifth round pick usually ends up as a special teamer on most teams or limited role player, that said I know we are dealing with the eagles who always seem to live on 5th round picks (Cole, Celek, Schmitt, almost as many as the 4 first round starters read ChaoticEagles fanpost). My view is he is worth a flyer at that pick.

Schmitt wasn't our 5th rounder...

he was drafted by Seattle…thought I’d point that out.

still a fifth rounder but that really has nothing to do with this and i know

Honestly I think he's to slow for our system...

He’s a great story, he’s a great kid (from everything I’ve heard), he’s nuts which makes him fit here in theory.. But I don’t think he fits our new system to well..

However if he’s there in the 7th I’d be ok with taking a flyer on him.

On Casey Matthews. I like him. I think he’d be good for our read and react LB core we’re going to have.. I want him.

Yes, Wild_Eagle's infamous reputation did help him get this award. But he shows that he walks the talk that he serves...with his keyboard. Wild_Eagle protects the motherland (BGN) from the evils of noobs, douche-bags, and other assholes. Although he may be crude and unnecessary, all great defenders draws the yellow flag from time to time.

What do you like about Casey Matthews? I am not putting down your opinion I just don’t see a great player and I would like to hear your view on him. He does seem to have very good football IQ and leadership but I think many people see the last name. He is no wear close to his brother in terms of talent. He seems to get washed away by bigger linemen. His stats were never anything crazy. In fact simliar to Herzlichs ’10 post cancer stats. I know ACC and Pac 10 is different compition levels but there are still some good ACC teams.

Matthewss: 73 tackles, 9 TFL, 3 INT, 1 FF
Herzlich: 65 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 4 INT, 2 FF

He might have timed slow at the combine, but he doesn’t play that slow. He played a lot out wide at BC covering the slot at times. He has to be pretty darn athletic and have some kind of speed to do that. I know he wasn’t a speed demon out there but I think some speed will come back the more he has time to get back into football shape. Remember He also had a broken foot he was dealing with last year.

I don’t know maybe I just have dreams of the old talent the kid had and maybe it will never come back but at that point in the draft I’d rather take a shot at a guy that had possesed crazy talent and might come back to form rather than a small school project that will also take time to develop and even then is a long shot.

See my thing with Matthews is that

He’s a pretty good player. Not as good as the others he hails from but he’s pretty damn good… Honestly watching Matthews I didn’t even realize his heritage until the Championship game, I kinda flipped in to watch it while focusing on other games.

With Matthews what I like is that while he’s not the most talented he’s always there, he stirs the pot, he requires somebody to watch him (some may disagree but from what I’ve seen he’s always one offenses have to account for) and when the games on the line he always makes a play. See the Cam Newton fumble he caused, and a few of his INT’s..

Also with Matthews he’s just got that “it” factor when I watch him. He seems like a guy who’s going to be a good football player…

Now when comparing the two, Herzlich is a good player don’t get me wrong, but Matthew’s the better. Add in his cancer (which read what Macjack said above) his career’s going to be shorter, he’s probably never going to get what he had back to be honest…

Also Oregon isn’t really a small school, there’s a reason he was the leader of a very good defense..

My first thought was hell no.

But I’ve been around people with cancer. They just dont rebound that quick. This guy must have a driving force behind him.

Yea I like to see him in Eagles Green. Give the guy a shot . See what he brings to the table. Besides , Hes gonna come cheap.

Just getting through chemo takes a monster pair. Combine that with a talented kid who’ll only cost us our second fifth-round pick, and the answer seems to be an easy yes.

This is all cool

But have you noticed, that Herzlich will attend the draft. He won’t be there to seat and wait until 5th round to be picked. So there must be a strong indication that this guy can go in 1. round(2nd in worst case scenario), which is shocking to me.
List of players:

by Isi_eagle on Apr 27, 2011 4:35 AM EDT reply actions

By the way

I also wonder what’s Randall Cobb and Ryan Williams doing there. My impression always was that they invite guys that will probably be picked in 1.round, plus players wouldnt accept invitation if they haven’t been given a strong indication, that they will be drafted in 1. round. Otherwise it’s embarassing to seat there through the whole 1.round and then just go home, ’cause you didnt get drafted.

by Isi_eagle on Apr 27, 2011 4:38 AM EDT reply actions

Randall Cobb could very well go in the first..

He’s a playmaker and a damn good player, and without my kentucky bias I have him as the 3rd best WR in this draft.

Somebody like the Ravens, Patriots, Jets, Atlanta, Seattle, Colts, and Kansas City are all late in the 1st and could be looking for a WR.

I get that

But it still less then 50% chance that he gets drafted in first round. But what do I know. There’s no smoke without a fire(or whatever you guys in the States say) :) So the attendance of all three players must be taken as an indication of that they will be picked in 1.round.

by Isi_eagle on Apr 27, 2011 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

No way he goes in the first round. This is the players moment, even if they dont go in 1st, its the experience they have worked for and dreamed about. He wants to be there and enjoy it, I think he’s earned it. Remember without the cancer he would have been here and been picked in the first round, so as he has not let cancer stop him in his dream for the NFL he will not let it stop him from being there and injoying this experience. I am also sure the NFL wanted him there because of his incredible story so they can give him some recognition that he deserves. He will most likely go anywhere from round 5 to round 7. On pro football weekly he is projected to go late in the sixth round.

I think Cobb is a Late 1st early 2nd rounder…. If he drops to gettin range in the 2nd we should pull the trigger.
