With the forty-ninth pick in the 2011 BGN Mock Draft, number5 selects...
Andy Dalton - QB, TCU
The Jags are ecstatic right now, they selected one of the top 5 options at quarterback in this years class. Dalton offers a lot of things to teams. First he is intelligent with the ball, reads the field extremely well and rarely throws in double coverage. He is a proven winner, losing only 3 games as a TCU starter while setting a record for wins with 44 and is a leader on and off the field. On the field he is athletic, decent speed for a quarterback and is extremely accurate on the run.
Although playing in a spread system, Dalton has impressive footwork. He can pick up first downs regularly, with over 1,600 yards scrambling and 22 TD's. Finally he has a amazing arm that can fire bombs down field, yet accurately. Dalton throws extremely well inside the numbers. His throwing career is good with over 10,000 yards throwing, 7.8 yard avg, and a TD : INT ratio of 71:30. Oh, and his completion rating is 61.7.
More after the jump...
Here's why he fits well with the Jags. Although David Garrard is serviceable, Dalton is extremely streaky and when in a off period during the season, he has a hard time getting the ship turned around. Garrard has had some injury problems, only playing 14 games this year and not impressing with a only 2,724 yards and a poor TD : INT ratio of 23:15. He's 33 and probably not going to improve much. For the Jags to make it to the playoffs and Del Rio to keep his job, they need more than a serviceable QB. They need a lot of help to become contenders on both sides of the ball.
On defense they need to pressure the QB and cover passing threats. They improved their DL in round one. On offense, they have a great running back in Maurice Jones-Drew, great tight end in Marcedes Lewis, two young bookends, and a receiving threat in Mike Sims-Walker. Adding Dalton instantly improves this offense. Don't believe me? How the Rams when from 1-15 to a potential division champs? With a improved QB. Del Rio can start Dalton off the bat or develop him under Garrard till Garrard gets boo and thrown off the field.
Next on the clock will be eagles4321 with the San Diego Chargers.
